Strength:

Good gas mileage

Weakness:

Brakes have been a problem since 3mos after purchase. Soft, spongy peddle, squeaking constantly. Dealer has been no help and I have to miss work again to let the service department try to find problem. I have problems with the digital clock not working and now the CD player is inoperable. There have been several other minor repairs to the transmission, a gas cap problem, tune up adjustments..all which I do not feel should have happened to a car soo new and one that I take very good care of.

This is my first new care purchase in sometime and I will not make Hyundai my choice again. I am very unhappy with the vehicle and do not have the peace of mind I expected to have in owning a new car. If you are looking for affordable, DEPENDABLE transportation and service from your purchase, the Hyundai should not be your choice. I am right now looking to purchase more reliable transportation in a newer, probably used HONDA as I know they have a HIGH consumer satisfaction rating.

Strength:

Hyundai stands behind there products. If something goes wrong they fix it. You people out there who say they don''t are full of CRAP. Lots of standard stuff too. Engine is highest in its class. Once again they are beating the competition. The WARRANTY as well.

Weakness:

Hyundai image people have. Those people who are having bad expirences with Hyundai. O Well doesn''t look like you people are having any affect on their sales anyway.

I was in the market for a Toyota or a Subaru. I saw the car sitting at the dealership at night time and in the morning I called to ask about it. At first I thought it was a Honda. The salesman said no, it''s a Hyundai Elantra. I said O. I asked him about the car and what was with it. I bought my car used. It had about 8,000 miles on it when I purchased it in June 2001. The origianl owner had a hip problem and needed something higher off the ground. I went to look at the car about 1 month later. As I looked over the car it was in excellent condition (and still is). My came with the basic standard things plus automatic and cruise. I had keyless entry installed. The car works beautifully. I travel about 350 miles a week and the gas is good and the car is solid. I love Hyundai. I never knew who they were until this car. By the way this is my fist car and I will be staying in this car brand. Yes, there are people out there who have had bad experiences with Hyundai cars. They are selling them like crazy now. I think it is becasue of the warranty. When I bought mine I had 5years/60,000. The only trouble I have had was the spark plugs went bad, but the warranty coverd that. I read these reviews about these people getting Hyundai and all of this stuff happens to them, but the WARRANTY will not cover it. I do not know who you people are, but the warranty does cover it. We also tesat drove the Santa Fe recently. What a spectacular piece of work. They pulled it off. Even better are the crash test rating for the Santa Fe. My Elantra did exceptionaly well in the same crash test they put the Santa Fe through.

Strength:

The Elantra only has one trim level, the GLS. Power everything is STANDARD, not like other vehicles I tested. The horsepower is among the highest in its class.

Weakness:

The car does use a lot of plastic. The trimwork on the inside definitely would not be mistaken for a luxury car (if you can get a luxury car for this price, go for it) And working on the car, such as oil changes, tune ups, and other minor maintenance takes a bit longer than expected due to the additional plastic trim pieces under the hood.

I traded in my old civic for a new Elantra in late 2000. I compared the 2000 and 2001 models, and found the changes (bigger wheels, longer wheelbase, side air bags, and a better mounted engine) were worth the little extra money. I priced and test drove the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, and the Mazda Protege before making my purchase. For the money, the Elantra gave more amenities than the Civic, more powerful engine than the Corolla, and about the same features as the Protege, but I felt that the Elantra handled better. The 2.0 liter engine with 5-speed transmission delivers plenty of power to get the car moving on the highway, and you can even drop down to 3rd gear if needed on the expressway. I have almost 50,000 miles on the car in a little over a year, and I am more than satisfied with my purchase.

Strength:

EVERYTHING ESPECIALLY THE VALUE

Weakness:

NONE SO FAR

If "DRIVING IS BELIEVING" then I can honestly say I AM A BELIEVER. I now have approx. 20,000 miles on my Elantra and have encountered no mechanical problems so far. The only problem I had was the seat track on the drivers seat which was promptly repaired by the dealer. I highly recommend this car to anyone looking for an inexpensive yet very reliable car. My sister just bought my niece a corolla and it just dosen''t compare. She paid 3,000 more for it than I did for the Elantra and it was so pooly equipped. You just can''t beat the value of the Elantra.

Strength:

4-cyl but feels like 6-cyl specially when using the POWER button. Great car for the money. Sporty appearance. Sporty sound out of muffler. Power everything. Smooth ride.

Weakness:

Plastic door handles. 1 broke only the lower part of the handle is holding to the car the rest is just plastic so when you grab the handle you aren''t grabbing the pulley you are grabing just plastic and it might break. Used to have slow acceleration when I got it, now it accelerates much quicker don''t know what made it work better. The seat is to high and no electric controls to move it down. No ABS on the 97.

Excellent car fot the money. I had some problems at the time of purchase such as having to replace the carburator, alternator and brakes. I believe that everything was caused by the bad treatment from the previous owner. But now its running great

Strength:

Options for the price, stylish in an economy class, quiet running, good pick-up/acceleration, "clean" cleverly engineered vehicle. Down to the sunglass holder atop the interior light switch - awesome job to the Hyundai engineer staff - $13000 for all this and a 5/60 warranty!!!

Weakness:

The material used to build the car doesn''t seem as "sturdy" or durable as more pricy cars, but the trade-off for the features to price ratio is well worth it!

My first impression is that I simply love this car! First, I bought the car brand new with 11 miles on it with EVERY feature including color that I wanted in any car. It was $800 under INVOICE (thanks to some research by carsdirect.com) - so I was happy from the start - HIGHLY recommend carsdirect and getting own financing BEFORE entering the dealership (if you even want to go to the dealer - thank God for the internet)... anyway - the car looks nice - sure, it isn''t my old car that I had to sell b/c it was too expensive (2000 Mits Eclipse GT which was a lousy experience) - BUT...it has good pickup, a/c,cruise,auto, pw,pdl, keyless entry, cd player, etc + a fantastic warranty. Will write another review in a while but I never felt this excited about driving another car in my life - no kidding - not even the 220hp Eclipse. And it doesn''t look like a dorkie car, actually pretty stylish and I''m 28.

Strength:

Great price, good warranty, powerful, solid and reliable, good amount of standard features.

Weakness:

None.

This car has to be one of the best A to B getters ever made - I bourght the base stick shift model - it had all the functions I needed, a powerful engine (compared to other compacts in its class), a great price and fantastic warranty. Also, edmunds.com are doing a two year drive test of the very same car and so far (over the last eight months and about 12,000 miles) nothing has gone wrong with there car - I have 17,000 on mine and I can report the same.

I did my home work to get a good price. The dealer let me alone to make own mind up. This car has a very solid feel to it and doesn''t break a sweat @100mph The last check on gas mileage was 31mpg with 95% city driving. I have 2800 miles on it now. Took delivery with 46 miles on it.
