Hyundai Accent
Strength:
Great Gas Mileage. Comes with Great Tires. Easy Handling. Doesn't scratch easily. Handles minor accidents well. Dependable, tough. Great deal.
Weakness:
After owning it for a while the sports car speed starts to resemble more of the compact car that it is. Can be noisy when the heater is running. My Hundai is a dream. I have put some serious strains on my car.. it has never let me down. It has always started for me, even in frigid cold temps. when many other people were having trouble starting their cars of various types, my little Hyundai Accent 2DR Hatchback started right up, no problem. I just turned the key and she was ready to go. Hardly any maintenance has been needed. The tires are wonderful.. I just put air in them a month ago fo rthe first time, last month was also the secon time I have changed the oil. I was way over mileage for my oil change, my car was acting perfectly but my conscience made me take her in to get it done. I have been on several road trips, 1 from the state of MD to CO, then from CO to the outside edge of KS close to the Missouri state line (did that trip twice). This car is good and it more than pays for itself. Great gas mileage. |

Strength:
good gas milage great warranty huge trunk few problems
Weakness:
smaller engine not much "oomph" My Accent has been good to me. I have taken it everywhere, even into the mountains (knowing it's not designed for that), and it is going on strong! I have 73,000 miles on it and the only thing that I had to take it in for was buning oil. I was told that it was the motor, so within a day I recieved a brand new motor for free! I drive 1 1/2 hours every day to work and back and it has saved me a whole lot of gas $. One other plus is that it has such a huge trunk for a small car! I can fit a massage table or a bike or luggage for a long trip! It's great. Similar Products Used: Chevy Sprint Geo Metro |

Hyundai Accent L
Strength:
Price, Warranty, Gas milage, solid smooth ride for this size car, smooth handling.
Weakness:
OK so the paint scratches easily but with common sense you can avoid scratches. As for power what can expect from 92 hp engine. More would be nice but the SOHC engine is quieter than the DOHC engine. Test drove the Toyota Echo and was shocked at the road noise that came through floor along with the $15,000 price tag. SO I went next door to the Hyundai dealer where I bought a Sante Fe and test drove many Accents. The best running one I drove was a silver mist SOHC 92HP Basic 5 speed Accent L. The price was $7995 plus tax. After 5,000 miles no complaints. I get 32mpg with city driving and 37mpg with highway/city driving. I am a firm believer in synthetic oil and changed over to Amsoil 10-W30 at the first oil change of 3.750 miles. No complaints so far. Fun to drive, easy to park, good gas milage and good warranty. Stupid me had to scpe some ice off the car and I put a few scratches on the paint job but other than that I love the car. Listen I once was a firm believer in buying American but I always got burned on the service and warranty service. With Hyundai I have taken my SUV and Accent to the dealers to have minor checks done and have not had to pay a penny. My wife loves the safety features of her SUV SanteFe and I love the economy and the quality ride of my little Accent L. Compared to the Toyota Echo the Accent was a more solid smoother ride and for $7000 less.Listen you must test drive many cars before picking one. I tried the 1.6 liter Accents but found that one little silver car that didn't have all the bells and whistles to be the best riding one on the lot. Strength:
Cheap price. Although I'm beginning to think that for the same price I could have gotten a used car with the same or better performance and service life.
Weakness:
It's a five speed stick shift and the gears don't always shift smoothly. You can't slow down and then shift to a lower gear without really pushing hard. When driving in slow traffic, you sometimes have to come to a full stop in order to shift into first or second gear. Don't even think about resale value. My loan balance is more than the current blue book value. I paid $9000. This is really my work commuting car and I figured 3 to 5 years service without any additional expenditures is all I needed. This is a cheap car so don't expect much. You get what you pay for. I bought it mainly for the warranty and price. I commute 75+ mi per day to work and needed a reliable car (as opposed to a cheap used car). Wouldn't want to waste an expensive car just for commuting. Having a long warranty is great but not too great when you actually have to use it. Also, by 40k mi I've had to repair/replace many parts that are considered normal maintenance and not covered by the warranty, re: brakes, belts, fuel filter, fuel system service (because I failed the annual NJ emissions test), wipers. When you add up these maintenance costs, the overall price you pay is about what you'd pay for a better car without the headaches. For ten grand you'll get a used BMW or similar (fully loaded and more safe on the road) that will outlast any Hyundai Accent. Strength:
Good fuel Economy "Peppy" GREAT in the snow!
Weakness:
seats are not very comfortable small car (inside) noisy gets thrown around by wind Resale value - low I have owned this car since March of 1999. I bought it used from a Hyundai Dealership with 29,000 km. The first owner had added A/C, tinted windows and an upgraded stereo. It now has 136,000km and I have not had any major problems with it. I have not had to take it in to a garage for anything except oil changes. For some time a couple of years ago the car was "hesitating" quite a bit on the highway. I took it in to the dealer and after hooking it up to the computer, I was told it was a computer chip that needed to be replaced. This was fine for a while and then had to be replaced again. Finally they replaced the whole chip board. All this was done under warranty so I was not out of pocket. The only other time I had a problem was one summer when I noticed it was overheating. I took it in and it was the cooling fan motor that was "dirty" and preventing it from starting. The mechanic knocked it with a hammer and it has been fine ever since. One criticism I have about Hyundai's in general, is that if something does go wrong it will cost you. For example, if I had to replace that motor, it was going to cost me over $400 CDN. That's insane! The dealerships also have the best scam job going. They set-up these "schedules" for service to be complete, and during the life of the schedule they have 3-4 times that you have to bring it in for a complete service. That cost's you $350-400. Well, I did not fall for that! I completed oil changes every 5,000 km and after getting sick of the service guy bothering me about the "complete service" and how I was overdue I left and now go where ever to get an oil change (Walmart Etc...). Overall, The Hyundai is a great little car. It is great on fuel, is peppy in town and highway (until you turn on the A/C) and there is lot's of room when you put the seats down. The NEW Hyundai's are a good little car. Similar Products Used: 1986 Honda Accord 2 DR Hatchback |

New Tranny after 25,000 km Not fast enough Tires are small, and cant put bigger ones on. Car was great at first but it has it moments. Sometimes runs fast, then others it runs like a go cart. I think at first it is as smooth as can be, then it all goes down hill. You need to really find where the hot spots are for speeding up other wise your going nowhere. GREAT gas milage (34MPG) avg. Light and can be parked in even the tinyist spaces.VERY reliable. VERY easy to change oil (can be done without getting under car)rest of routene maintence is just as easy.
Weakness:
Weak sound from radio. Thin paint. Some wind noise at 60+MPH Kinda small for a 6'1"/210Lb guy but still loved it for 4yrs2mos. I bought this little car Nov 1998 and it had never seen the service center except for it's 15K/mi services (I did all other service myself) oil changed every 3K/mi. This has been the best and MOST reliable car I have owned. It never burned or leaked a drop of oil and never overheated. I sold it Jan 2003 with a bit over 47K/mi and still running strong. The only reason I sold it was that I wanted a bigger car with A/C and really liked the Elantra GT when I saw it at the Sd and LA auto shows. Bought the Elantra GT from the same dealer and salesperson I am hoping this car is just as great ( I will post on the Elantra board about this car after I break it in)The biggest gripes I see from other Accent posts is I feel largly due to lack of care and maintence (Take care of the car and it will take care of you)The car had great power and could easly bark the tires in 2nd I had no problems getting onto the S.Ca freeways. The only downsides to the car was: 1. Radio needed more power output so one could hear it with windows down. 2. Thin paint (too easily chipped). Overall VERY pleased with the car so much so that I went back to Hyundai for my 2nd car. I can't say anything about the service dept since I never needed them great warranty but again never used it. Service dept was great when I went in for scheduled service. I don't care what others may think of Hyundai my Accent was excellent. -great gas mileage - 32 mpg -beautiful paint color - orange/red -nice ride for being so small -easy and cheap to fix -easy to upgrade the radio to a cd player -good stereo sound
Weakness:
-transmission problems -paint chips and dents VERY easily, i accidentally closed the garage door on the trunk and i have a nice dent from it the door even had a rubber bottom -oil chugger -hard getting up to speed when getting onto the highway really have to hit on the gas i loved thie car when i first bought it. it was my first car. it had very nice and easy steering, it was almost like a go cart. however, this car has many problems. within the first month it had transmission problems. nothing major, just shuddered when slowing down for a stop sign. it didn't do it if you slowed down fast enough, but sometimes you couldn't help that. another problem is this car puffed oil out the tailpipe. within it's last oil change, less than a month ago, we had to put a new oil change in it, 5 quarts. the car obviously didn't like that and it smoked and right now it is still sitting along the highway, waiting to be towed. i recommend buying a warrenty with this car. i do not regret buying this car, however. it runs good and the repairs are cheap. i would buy another one. |
