Strength:

-Extremely reliable, high quality materials
-Handles suprisingly well for a 4 door
-Great on MPG
-Solid, well built, well engineered vehicle
-Fingertip effort power steering

Weakness:

None really. Maybe a little more power and some cup holders (?) As good as this car has been to me/us I really have nothing to complain about.

I could go on and on about how much I love this car, but here's a somewhat smaller version. First off, I have an '89 Accord LX-i, 4 door, with 5 speed manual trans and 2.0L 120 HP fuel injected engine. This thing is like a really good dog. It is always there for you no matter what. My mother initially purchased this car in May, 1997 with 137,000 miles on it. It was in near mint condition. My mom drove it for 3 1/2 years before rear ending a minivan and totalling it (March, 2000). I had always loved that car and I knew it still had lots of life left in it, so I talked her into getting it back from the insurance company, which she did, and to my suprise they didn't put up a fight. She went on and got a '94 Accord EX, and I'm currently working on fixing the front end on this one ($3,000 - $5,000 front end damage). I've now been driving it since July, 2000, and this damage did not phase this little solider a bit. I've put 14,000 miles on it since I started driving it in July, and it has been every bit as reliable as it was before its mishap. It currently (3/01) has approx 267,000 clicks on the odometer and the car has never broken down, and to date the only repairs other than normal wear and tear stuff, are both CV joints (once), 2 fuel injectors (once), 1 alternator (once), and 1 water pump (once). It still has the original clutch, engine, transmission, etc. The original water pump didn't go out until 260,000. It still rides smooth as silk at 90 mph (if the highway isn't filled with potholes!!!!), and still gets 26 mpg in winter mix city/highway. I'm still every bit as confident in this car as I was several years ago. In December, 1999 I drove it from Chicago to Colorado. At the time it had about 245,000 miles, and I had no worries at all about the car. I drove through the Rocky mountains, to the top of Pikes Peak (14,100 ft up), and back home, a total of about 3,000 miles in 5 days. Not a single problem. It has been one of the most reliable, trouble free, worry free vehicles anyone in my family has ever owned. Even with the age and mileage, it still starts right up on the first try on these cold Chicago mornings. I would most definitly recommend this car or any other Honda for that matter, to anyone - young, old, middle age, pregnant, whatever. It has plenty of get-up-and-go for me (and I'm 19), and Honda does not sacrafice quality for performance or comfort, nor do they sacrafice performance or comfort for quality. It is a perfect mix. I truly do love my Accord, and I get teary every time I think that someday it just may die, and I will have to say goodbye to such a wonderful automobile that has treated me as if I were God or something (now you see why I wanted to save it from the junker) If this one ever quits, my next vehicle will definitely be a Honda, either an Accord or Prelude, not sure yet. Until then I'll just keep driving this one until it is completely dead.

The car is discusting. It shifts into each gear extremely roughly. It never ran good and Honda Dealer associates are very rude.We always were putting money into it.We only had it for 1 month and it blew a head,it cost 2,200 to re-do it.It always overheated. We put like 7 thermostats in and bought anew radiater in.There is so much we did to it,it would take me 5 hours to write it all down. The motor finaly blew,we killed it at the junk yard.

These cars are crap,I would never buy one again.

Model Reviewed: /89 Honda Accord DX 4 dr/LX-i coupe

Strength:

89: Great finish, brakes, modern design, great speakers (factory) gas mileage (25-33+ @134 HP), highly responsive engine and suspension
86: Great finish, good design, gas mileage(22-30 @ 96HP), took a 1,600 mile trip +commuting with no problems, good handling

Weakness:

89: Muffler rutsted out at 91k, wheel covers had flaked, had some loose bolts on compressor mounting, sticky seat belts
86: Seats aren't as comfy as 89, and don't sit as well at the pedals and wheel, the brakes are stiff (this is common in 86's), automatic transmission could be better

Good reliability if properly cared for, expenses are actually less than domestic cars since you don't have to repair them every week, VERY fun to drive (great handling), comfortable & lasting interior, great factory speakers (on LX-i) - they sound great and still work, Best manual transmission I've driven (89 - smooth, tight), the PGM-FI System adjusts to your driving really well!! 89 was not as well put together as 86. My 86 had a lot of original parts on it still in order at 156k, while the 89 had loose bolts on the AC compressor, and the muffler fell off at 91k. The 86 had a clunky automatic (but that is the nature of it. resolve this by changing the fluid several times in a row, back to back.) 86 only had 2 speakers (and they were only 4"), but I upgraded, 86 seats were not supportive enough for the brisk handling, it was harder to get comfortable with foot and steering positions in the 86 than it is the 89.
You may see some negative things here, but I do have some car experience and believe me if you know how to pick one in good shape you WILL NOT REGRET purchasing a Honda Accord. This car is good for anyone practical - the 80s and early 90s models are timeless!!

Model Reviewed: Accord LX Sedan

Strength:

1) Excellent sound quality (My car is unique to most others, oddly.)
2) Smooth ride.
3) VERY COOL car design (Looks like a NASCAR stockcar or a sports coach's car. Jocky design).
4) Seriously refined from the 1997 model.
5) Lots of engine power for a 4 cylinder.
6) POWERFUL engine.
7) Outperforms Camry any day of the week.
8) Quiet interior.
9) It is VERY safe to drive. (I been in a highway accident when my mom accidentally struck another car from behind and we both walked away unscathed. It didn't do much damage to it, surprisingly!)

Weakness:

1) The engine rumbles obnoxiously when the AC is on
2) The paint job (It must be where they are built) is a little sensitive to scratches.
3) The security (if you have the Executive brand) can lock down sometimes and stall the car for a moment.

Seemingly, my family's car turned out to be somewhat of a special edition type of Accord. We just got ours in March of 1999, and it was a dream to be driving. The Executive brand security system alarm in the car is so high tech that it can cause you to yell at the car sometimes...

My mom payed a price of $22K, and the payments are $360 per month. This isn't bad, considering this car. Since we got ours when the first models rolled in, we probably got a demonstrator due to its overall performance! Ours had a 150Hp engine but performs like a 180Hp one.

This car is VERY practical, with yet some youthful sportiness in the exterior. The car is easy to keep clean, and if you take great care of it frequently, it will grow to love you. But like some people may say, it does perform almost like a 1999 Altima GXE, but is a little larger and accelerates a little slower.

For people who are practical and like a sporty look to their car with serious reliability and price range (They're not as much as the car we have, fortunately), I highly suggest this car.

But for people who want a faster car with higher luxury, you can go buy the overly expensive 200-2001 Maxima GXE.

I seriously recommend this car, but I also recommend that you test the car and give it a thorough examination to get the best one available.

Model Reviewed: Accord EX V6 Coupe

Strength:

- Incredibly quiet for car in this class.
- Incredibly smooth for a car in this class
- Suprisingly quick for only 200 HP. If you ask me, that number is under-rated.
- Flawless interior design and execution. There are none better that I've seen.
- Excellent road feel. The MXV4 tires are not designed to be super sticky, but it's a fair trade-off because the mileage is better, and the ride is much quiter and more smooth than you'll find with "performance" tires.
- Very stable and tracks true at highway speeds (and trust me, it's easy and quick to reach dangerous speeds... I have to cool it before the long arm of the law comes down on me).
- As with all my previous Hondas, maintenance is a breeze. Just change the oil, wash it every once in a while. That's pretty much about it.

Weakness:

Transmission delays for a split second when accelerating hard, in order to control emissions during the RPM drop. It's a minor annoyance, though. Certainly not noticeable under normal circumstances.

$23,000, bought this car using an Internet buying service (carprices.com, I believe..). Was the best buying experience yet. I dealt with the general manager only, and minus the test drive time, the whole process took less than 2 hours. I walked away very happy.
The V6 comes at a premium, but there is a good list of equipment to back it up, including power seat, side airbags, 16" wheels, great engine, leather seating, etc. The overall feel of the EX V6 is much more substantial than the LX and even EX 4cyl. It really adds a lot to the driving experience, and is the reason why I decided to go with the EX.
Now, if only Honda offered a manual transmission with the V6...

Similar Products Used:

Camry: ride is too bouncy. Too much lean in the corners
Taurus/Sable: Nice car, but way too heavy feeling, and very "floaty" over uneven roads.

lack of power, enough to get around but doesnt provide thrill during acceleration

I love this car but why doesnt Honda make the V6 with a manual transmission? The couple would have been much more fun with a stick and bigger tires, at least 16 inches, a better sound system is also necessary, i paid 21300 before tax, good price, but i would have shelled out an additional 3 Gs if V6 is available in a stick to provide more fun with the car.

Strength:

Excellent engineering for a mid-size car. Good MPG, my average is 21 in city and 30 on Hwy. Definite family car. Reliable. Can easily get 200,000 miles out of the engine. Popularity keeps the resale value high.

Weakness:

Loud engine noise at high RPM (above 4000), but typical of most small engine cars. Manual transmission shifting is not a smooth as it could be.

Head-on collision with my 95 Accord, and I walked away from the wreak with NO injuries. I have a 5-speed, and it provides more pickup than an automatic. 150hp is enough for the 4 cylinder, but the engine is capable of creating an engine much more power. I plan on replacing a few of the stock parts for more high performance parts, such as the intake, exhaust, and some electrical parts. This should add an extra 15-20hp, but will probably add more engine noise as well.

Strength:

-gas mileage
-smooth ride
-minimal repairs, just scheduled service
-seat cloth, cleanable, wears well
-good leg room upfront
-good resale if you don't sell back to the dealer
-reliable and dependable, even in freezing temperatures
-exterior design looks great, very sleek

Weakness:

-clutch is too far to reach for a 5'4" person
-seats are low in the rear for children, they feel confined
-low profile tires are useless in the snow, opted for an additional set of snows for the winter months
-would have appreciated a 50/50 rear seat split, as it is the whole seat does not fold flat anyway
-air conditioning is not great. Gets cool but not cold
-backing up in this model is difficult for a short person due to the height of the centre of the back seat. Need to rely heavily on mirrors.

-sale price $22K canadian in "95
-would recommend buying new or used and holding onto it - not too many out there for sale used.

Model Reviewed: + 00 Honda accord ex's

Strength:

Both cars place controls in very convenient locations.
Very low maintenance (on 92).
good gas mileage (about 29 with 92, 27 with 00) on highway.
roomy seating.
Both have IMO a beautiful exterior design.

Weakness:

Rear wheel well rust on 92 (this has supposedly been fixed in 94+).
Door locks not flush in door on 00 (I hang my arm out the window and the lock protrudes leaving a slight mark on my arm... waaaaaa!)F

The 92ex I bought for 10.1g OTD (out the door--all taxes/fees included at dealership) in late 95. It had 66k on it and now it has 142k and is still dependable. The rust is definitely an eye sore, but considering it's 8 years old there is nothing big to complain about. The internal door handle plates cracked (had to replace), the heat adjustment knob broke and had to be repaired with super glue, and the intermittent wiper switch quit (I live with it).

The 00ex was just bought for 20g OTD. I'm still wondering whether I got the bottom dollar on this car. There isn't much review to be done with this car due to the short amount of time the bank has let us use it. the features are all located in the same place as the 92 which makes it very convenient when switching cars. Added features I've noticed (compared to 92): moonroof tilt (nice to ventilate when you turn on ac), sunglass holder, considerably more space for nick-nacks in armrest, driver side electrical seat, standard alarm/keyless entry w/trunk (I think most cars have this).

We also drove VW Jetta's, Toyota Camry's, and Honda Civic's when in the market for this new car. None of these compared. I am very bias. The Accord is a great car! It seems most people are unpleased with the power. I'm happy with the 126hp and 150hpVTEC power. I knew I wasn't buying a sports car when I made both purchases. Good luck!
