Accord LX 5-Speed
Strength:
Great suspension potential Excellent steering/tracking Smooth and refined engine Supportive seats Excellent dash layout Spacious trunk General feel of quality and sophistication
Weakness:
Engine is overwhelmed by mass, although it really isn't a slug, another 20HP doesn't hurt The car looks great, but isn't very exciting A few nagging problems. The throwout bearing is defective in the clutch assembly and emitted a loud squeal during launching the car. The noise has since disappeared for about a month now with no explanation. Likely due to the previous owner and his inability to drive stick. The muffler has a rattle that can be heard from the inside during idle. The hangers, bolts and mounts are all tightened. Honda couldn't reproduce the rattle. Semi-lack of features. For the $22K new it costed, it doesn't come with a CD-player or sunroof for the LX model. That is the only place where domestics will beat foreign made. I bought the 1999 Accord used at Grappone for $12,900 (stickered at $15,000). The car had 24,827 miles on it when purchased on May 31st, 2002, and as of writing this (Sept. 14th), the car has just under 28,000 on it. So far, I love this car. The seats are comfortable, the dash is well laid out, the engine is refined. The steering is precise and the suspension does an admirable job of soaking up bumps without becoming floaty or vague. I bought this car as a project car (I'm a Honda fan to the fullest extent possible). My initial consideration was to find an H22A4 (the Honda Prelude's 2.2 liter DOHC 4-cylinder with 195HP) and drop it into the Accord. This is a common swap, for the engine mounts and electrical wiring is identical. But, since the car is new, I'm going to rebuild the 2.3 liter (F23A). I'll post a follow-up when it's complete. honda accord LXi hatchback
Strength:
Power, handling, fuel efficiency, ease of manuvering, traction in snow and on wet roads, comfort, style - LXi looks good, hatchback is great, durability, low maintenance, cruises at freeway speeds with no problem.
Weakness:
Sheet metal is really starting to go. Big rust holes in wheel wells and other places, but I think that was typical of Japanese cars of this period. Other that not much weakness after 260,000 miles. I helped a foreign exchange student test drive this '86 accord back in '96. He bought it for $1000 with about 190,000 miles on it. In 99 he gave it to me and since then I've driven it to 260,000 miles. Its been great. Everything but the engine stopped working (ac dead, rear wiper dead, wiper washer dead, etc.) Cruise control still works. For two years I ran it with the heater on high in the summer because the temperature guage got up close to red. Finally got smart and checked the thermostat which was broken and replaced it. Never gets above one third on temp now but blows heat in the winter. But I get great mileage and all I've had to do was replace the alternator, clutch and other routine maintenance. Change oil every 4-5,000, never wash it (might speed up the rust process:), and it drives with all the power it must have had new. I can't figure it out, but I really wish Detroit engines would have this kind of quality and efficiency. Oh, one other thing - since rust is a bit of a problem with older Japanese makes, I sprayed expanding foam in all the holes and wheel wells underneath - this has helped keep rain water from coming up and exhaust fumes out. Seats are still comfortable - can you believe it? Just bought a J-30, but will keep driving the accord till it dies or I do. I'm not sure which will be first! Similar Products Used: Toyota Starlet. |

POWER, POWER, POWER! Sweet sweet looks, SWEET handling, lots and lots of improvements. A very good deal for the price compared to many other luxury cars!
Weakness:
Ugly people that will drive the car. I Had a '99 LX, and wanted to get the '02 coupe V6 since they were on clearance. Driving by the dealer, the Silver on black 2003 caught my eye. I still test drove the '02 coupe and was very pleased, but once on the '03... goodness gracious.. no comparison. With all the extra sweet features, thousands of cutie points and mucho horsepower compared to the previous model.. this car was sold!=] I've been driving it for three days now, the car is able and willing to take on any challenges. Cornering is cake with the traction control, and acceleration compared to other cars is like taking candy from a baby. Seriously. I'm still on my brake in period, but couldn't help but step on the gas a few times on the freeway.. piece of cake. The car WILL use the VTEC and is always willing to go as high as you can on the Rev limiter. You have to get this car! Similar Products Used: Also have a 2001 Acura Integra GSR (LOVE IT). LX Manual
Strength:
Spacious, reliable, inexpensive.
Weakness:
A little too practical -- the 2-door is far sportier. My 1990 Accord (same model) felt slightly more powerful. Given the price, I have been very pleased my Accord through its first 1500 miles. It is far more spacious than the older Accords, and the manual transmission gives some power to the 150-hp engine. Similar Products Used: 1988 Honda Accord, 1990 Honda Accord. |

ACCORD
Strength:
Its looks and the way it handles.
Weakness:
Its horse power i think a bigger or at least a stronger engine needs to go in it This has to be the best car i have ever had. It has been nothing but a dream for me. It rides smooth and it has alright horse power but best of all i love the way it looks. And with it being a honda there is no end to the thing i could do to it. |

EX-V6 Coupe
Strength:
-power (weak low-end torque but good high-end horsepower) -features -value -smooth ride and good handling -styling -comfort
Weakness:
-rattles like a snake dammit -sometimes gas mileage sucks -but other than that it's great, just fix the rattles My first Japanese car- so far so good but not as impressed with quality as I thought I would be. Had fewer complaints with previous American and German cars. Got lots of extras (sunroof, power everything, leather, cd changer, traction control, a/c, 200 horses). Cheaper than other cars with similar options (BMW 3 series, VW Jetta). Few minor problems mostly to do with interior noise and comfort. Styling and looks good. Engine good. Great car but little annoying interior rattles get on my nerves and really affect my love towards this car. I am embarassed to take it into the dealer for the fourth time to complain about interior rattles and squeeks. Sunroof rattle common to other owners but easily fixed with special Honda oil and tape. Dash and rear rattles very annoying and it takes several trips to service to see any improvement. American-made, what can I say. Other than that and my obvious bitterness towards noises, this really is a great car and great value. 'Nuff power for young drivers and excellent smoothness and luxury for older buyers. Perfect blend of performance, comfort, features, and luxury. More rattles than expected for almost $30K Can. car but I guess those are not such a big deal. SE V6 Sedan
Strength:
Comfort, reliability, good on gas, looks, handles well, decent power with the v6,
Weakness:
It's a little heavy, but remember this is a comfort car not a race car. They are a bit more expencive than the civic but worth it if you have the money. This car is great, the first thing I noticed is that it is quiet and drives very smooth. It looks great inside and out. The V6 has 200hp which is nice when you pull up against Civics. So far there have been no problems... the accord is a bit heavy but makes up for it with space and comfort. My freind has an 89' Accord and it run perfect!!! I have also gave it a spin and being such an old car, I was amazed at how well it runs (with about 200,000k) basicly this is one of the nicest cars I've driven for it's price range. no manual transmission I just got a new v6 accord and it is a very nice ride, i cant enough of it. i've been doing a lot of research on the car and still not sure if this car is worth its money. The v6 was very price pricey but the ride is just so much better but im not sure if that extra money was worth it. Just a note: the price is in canadian dollars |
