4th Generation Honda Accord LX
Strength:
A lot of room, great AC, good handling, (quality parts), low-maintenance engine, and low depreciation rate(high re-sale value).
Weakness:
Transmission could be better, engine should be upgraded to DOHC for more power, suspension is a little bit of an issue. Do-it-yourself maintenance tasks are out of the question. You really need to know what your doing, when working on this car. I have had this car for almost a year now, and I have had little or no problems with it at all. I put this car through hell and back! It's been in 4 major accidents, ran into a ditch, topped out at 135 mph. Still runs and looks like new. I have yet to see a car that can take that much stress and still drive normally. Through 4 accidents, I never had to replace the brakes! That is the reason why you spend 20-30k for a Honda or Acura. Very well engineered, fun to drive with the 5 speed. Honda reliabilty reputation
Weakness:
Mediocre acceleration (PLEASE HONDA COME OUT WITH A V6 OR DOHC 4CYL/5 SPEED OPTION!!- The "family car" excuse just doesn't cut it when Toyota offers this in the Camry and Nissan offers it in 2 different vehicles (Altima and Maxima)!!!)Poor bumper paint. I got my 2001 Accord LX for just under 18,000 (last one on the lot.) I got it mainly because of its reputation for excellent reliability. My previous car, a 1995 Pontiac Bonneville, was plagued with problems. My Accord is the 4 cyl VTEC with 150 hp, and a 5 speed manual. I agree with previous posters that it seems underpowered at times- especially with the AC on- so do not mistake the VTEC for any kind of power-enhanced engine. But it is very smooth and runs extremely quiet. The 5 speed transmission is pretty good; I had been having a few problems getting it to go into gear on the fly at times, but this seems to have been resolved by a clutch pushrod adjustment done at the dealership for free. (It is still quite common for reverse gear to be "locked out" at times, and requires my going thru the H pattern to engage it. I was told however that this is quite common in manual transmissions. Anyone else have this problem?) Anyway, as previously mentioned in another review, it's too bad that Honda does not offer the Accord in a V6 with a 5 speed. Or even a DOHC 4, which would up power specs AND retain good fuel economy. Honda's reasoning is that the Accord is a family car, and thus is not designed for sporty use- if that's what you want, go with a Prelude. (But then they turn around and redesign the 2 door Accord coupe to look like one of the sportiest cars out there!) It's really too bad that Honda apparently does not realize the potential market for that powertrain- my feeling is people would be lining up. But I digress. The only other issue I would mention (also previously brought up on this site) is the bumper paint. I was washing my car with a high pressure hose and a section of the paint- about 3/4" diameter- just peeled right off! It does not appear that Honda used any kind of paint prep for the final coat to adhere to- it is just primer underneath. I took the car to the dealership and pointed it out, and they agreed immediately to repaint the whole bumper for free under warranty. (Sounds like they had this complaint before.) So if anyone else has this problem, it should be covered by warranty. Other that these issues, my Accord has been extremely reliable and is still fun to drive with the 5 speed. Fit & finish are WAY better than my Bonneville inside and out. Control layout is nice and I like the numerous storage areas. All around very good car so far. |

accord ex v6 coupe
Strength:
v6 is super fast, car almost drives itself, turns on a dime, car drives as if on rails, tons of trunk space for a coupe, leather seats have been extremely durable with my 60 pound boxer sitting on them.
Weakness:
paint really, really, really sucks--the color is beautiful (black currant), but it scratches entirely too easy!!! stereo could be much improved, (but so could all other stock systems) front brakes needed replaced on the 30,000 check which cost me more in labor than parts, (approx $400.00 when all was said and done) i LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my car!! the v6 engine rocks---i kick everybody's a** off the green light. the leather breathes, plenty of leg room in front, stereo buttons on the steering wheel is a great feature, car looks especially sharp with the rear spoiler. this is my first brand new vehicle and i would seriously recommend the honda accord coupe. i am 30 years old and all the 20 something's think my car is the bomb. I also think my car is the bomb! i have not had one single rattle, my sunroof has given me no problems, the carpet still looks brand new, the leather is showing a little wear on the driver seat (but only i notice it because only i look closely), my sister has a mit eclipse and was really impressed with my v6. i cannot impress enough how marvelous this car is!!! |

Strength:
Same cost as a modestly equipped Civic, Sentra, Corolla, etc. Plenty of room for a family of five. Edumds.Com shows that the Altima, Camry, Maxima, and Accord are all roughly the same size in interior room, trunk space, weight, etc. All things being equal, and all these cars known for good reliability, it seems silly to pay the extra $4000+ for the other cars. Excellent seats. Excellent and simple climate control system. Fantastik CD/Casette system for such a modestly priced car. Huge trunk. A big improvement over the prior Accord design. We also have a 95 Accord. This new one is a better and bigger car. Plenty of power for those more concerned with fuel economy rather than "Racer Boy" status. If you want a Maxima, get a Maxima. I'll keep the extra $10,000 + momey and invest it, thank you. Almost no electronics on this car: Nothing to break!
Weakness:
Hey, it's a brand new car, I haven't found any yet! First of all, I highly recommend Honda of Oxnard's Kenny Fryer as an awesome salesman. I negotiated the deal completely over the Internet and fax, and his price was about $1500 under invoice. The VP edition (Value Package) is basically the bottom of the line DX version with the most asked for options added: Automatic tran, Aircondtioning, and a six-speaker, cd and casette am/fm stereo. If you can live with manual windows, no sun roof, manual door locks and no cruise control, this car is the best value I have seen in recent years. Think about it, just over $14000 for a brand new Accord. Amazing. Based on my budget I settled on the Civic, with the Sentra, Protege, and Corolla as second choices. My family has had wonderful experiences with Hondas (Brother with 200k on a 90 civic) and Toyotas (Father with 170k on a 83 Tercel, so I was looking at a Civic Lx. There are five people in my family, including a large teenager, so I was slightly sceptical about the Civic and the other sub compacts. The first dealer tried to edge me immediately into an Accord at $4000 more than the Civic, but I didn't bite. Others on this list have mentioned that the redesigned 2003 Accord is on the way and the dealers have a real glut of 2002 Accords in all styles. I heartily agree. They really want to move Accords. Civics, they're not as flexible with. Bottom line to you Nissan, Toyota, and Mazda folks: Consider the Accord at $14000-$17000. My next choice was a Camry, but the local dealers couldn't do better than $18,500 for a stripped down version. Nice car, but how can you pass up a brand new Accord at $14000. Even the local Toyota dealer told be to go with the Accord. He even muttered somthing about going down to look at them himself! Don't get me wrong, the Camry and the Maxima are excellent cars. But dollar for dollar, the 2002 Accord is the best value at there. The manual windows provided a few inches more waist room, as the doors don't have the power window consoles sticking out into the cabin. I highly recommend this car. Accord DX
Strength:
Engine sound, Ergonomics, Tight steering, Looks, The fact that I beat brand new Pontiacs and Chevys. Seats are really durable. With little maintenance you can own a Honda for over 10 years without major problems. The body is really nice. I have a White/Blue DX, and from far it looks a lot newer than it really is. I keep it relatively clean, and it really shines when I wax it. Reliability. This car has left me stranded once (water pump died...my fault for not checking this item). Oh yeah, 120 mph top-speed and resale value after 12 years is insane!
Weakness:
The seats are a little uncomfortable after a few hundred miles. The car is definitely underpowered, but it still beats Sunfires. An up-close inspection reveals rust around the wheel wells, typical of older Jap cars (and maybe new ones in the future). If only I could get a V6 with a 5/6 speed manual transmission! I have to treat this car as a baby now that the mileage is really high. The power antenna never worked. Apart from tires and regular maintenance, I had to replace the B-pipe on the exhaust, it has rusted right off. It did sound quite good, but was way too loud without a muffler attached to it. I've had this car for a little over a year and I can't believe with 275 000kms (170k miles) the car still sounds and looks awesome. I bought it with 256400 kms (160k miles) for 4k Canadian (2500 US) and it rode and still rides like a dream. I would like to put an aftermarket exhaust to enhance the sweet sound of this Honda engine, even if it's just a 4cyl, but I'm looking for a newer car at the moment. A few complaints would be that this car guzzles gas in the winter. I swear I get 17 MPG in the city. Otherwise, the summer road trips yeild 30+ MPG, and putting around town yeilds around 24. I love the fact that the new Pontiac Sunfires/Chevy Cavaliers have the same size engine (2.2L), but have 10 LESS HP! The new Accords have even better engines with the addition of VTEC. I will get myself a VTEC Accord soon, as soon as I sell this car. For some reason, 275k kms and a 5speed scare away prospective buyers in my area (eastern Canada). Little do they know that Honda engines last forever. Strength:
Bombproof SOHC lump. Comfort. A relative rarity in Europe. Impeccable reliability.
Weakness:
Underpowered, with only 112 bhp and 120 lb/ft hauling nigh on 1300 kilograms. This car could quite possibly be the best saloon (sedan) of the era. The interior is excellent, with its E30 BMW 3-series-esque dashboard, and soft touch materials. Though some of the plastics are a little low-grade, in particular the centre console. How could a car this mundane looking be so much fun?? With its all round race car-derived double wishbone suspension, overtly light, if direct steering, and rev-happy 16 valve engine it's a joy to hustle around the mountain roads of this area. A tip though.. if you're looking for power sliding antics in the snow, install good winter tyres on the front, and normal summer tyres on the rear. Drifting it from apex to apex in those conditions is quite a hoot! The Mk4 Accord is almost tank-like, and vastly over-engineered. But the body isn't sufficiently rust proof, and doesn't take well to the copious amount of road salt our local authority uses. The engine is still sweet at 156k miles, despite irregular servicing - it'll far outlive the bodywork I'm sure. |
