DESCRIPTION

Strength:

4.6 liter engine styling comfort

Weakness:

Composite intake manifold (cracks) Heavy doors (strains hinges) Transmission (clunks alot at slow speed) Front Rotors (warp)

Overall, I really enjoy driving this car. The only mechanical problem that I have had was a cracked intake manifold after 35,000 miles. (Note: The dealer replaced it free as part of a "silent recall." The new composite manifold is supposed to be reinforced where the crack occurred). Although the car has good horsepower, at 205 hp, the transmission "short shifts" at 4200 rpm and the top speed is limited to 105 mph. I resolved these problems by installing a high performance chip (Superchip) that gave me 21 more hp, 33 more ft/lbs of torque, much firmer 5,000 rpm shifts, and removed the top speed limiter. The car is now much more responsive. I recommend this inexpensive and easy "fix" for anyone who wants Mustang performance from their T-Bird. To resolve the rotor warpage problem, I will be installing cross-drilled rotors with carbon fiber pads on all four wheels.

Strength:

Everything!

Weakness:

I had to replace the brakes, radiator, valve cover gaskets, burnt out light bulb, front tires, a window motor and it now needs brake cables and a tune-up.... And the parts ARE NOT CHEAP!

This was given to my son from my brother and i ended up driving it for a couple of months (sure glad i did!).It has awsome power, great styling, and handles great. The Digital Dash is awsome and looks really cool at night. It has so many things for a 89 like a cd player, power antennae, power windows, locks and seats. It also has an auto-dimming mirror and automatic lights. I love it!

Strength:

5.0 HO v8 engine Air Conditioning Solid design Parts easy to find Sweet looking Classic car Reliable Rear-wheel drive

Weakness:

Rear-wheel drive Horns Front brake rotors

As a prior Thunderbird and Cougar owner, both of which were the v6, I was pleased to have found a 5.0 v8 in mint condition. Prior owner babied it and never put any real mileage on it until the year before she sold it which was only highway mileage. They only used the 5.0 in this body style from 91-93. It doesn't have airbags but it does have anti-lock brakes. It just turned 119,000 miles and looks/runs/drives like it has about 30,000. It has a K&N filter and a cd player. I will put better mufflers on soon but that's it. Only problem has been a leaky tranny seal on the r1 gear. $300 later it is perfect again. It gets good mileage, especially on the highway, for a v8 anyways. It is something I would like to be driving if I ever get into a car accident. It's solid and dependable. Mine is the Cayman Green and really looks sharp. Black interior with leather. I still can't get over that the power antenae and the fog lights still work!

Strength:

It looks good. Its very comfortable inside. CD player, (but that was factory installed)

Weakness:

I would like to say that maybe the person that owned it before me did not take care of the car, but after talking to other T-bird owners and reading revies, it is quite clear to me that Ford is garbage. They make cheap, unreliable automobiles that are made to fall apart after a certain number of miles. That way Ford diehards will buy another one after theres falls apart, keeping Ford in business! Im sure some Ford cars are good up to 40 or 50,000 miles, but after that just get rid of them. Its not worth the potenital problems that lie ahead. The cars weaknesses: -140 horsepower 3.8 V6 engine -very slow acclerating from a stop -no real passing power -skitzo tranny that upshifts and downshifts irratically -cheaply constructed -bad overall quality

I was so excited when I bought this car from my best friends brother for $2,000. I thought I was getting a deal, but it turned out to be a horrible nightmare. I was ready to have a nervous break down. Immidiately after I bought it I noticed it was rather slow. I thought it might need to have the fuel injectors cleaned. I tried that. Nothing changed. If I wanted the car to move at all it required full throttle application until it reached about 35 mph, then I would let up on it. This obviously sucked in heavy traffic, because once the car caught up with the traffic infront of me, I had to brake so I wouldn't rear end them! Around the same time, the engine running dangerously hot! There was plenty of anti-freeze in the raditor, but it still ran hot and there was no heat. I was told by a mechanic that it was a failing head gasket. But it turned out that it just needed a thermostat. Then the radiator blew out on Christmas morning, 40 miles from my house in the middle of nowhere, which was bizzare to me since it was 10 below zero outside at the time. Back to the first problem. One day the car decided to only go 30mph, with the pedal to the floor! I took it in for the last time to a mechanic. He was finally able to fix it, after 4 others could not. Apparently it needed the computor reset and the air flow sensor reset. Then the car acclerated great! Full throttle was still needed to get onto the highway, I assumed it was just an underpowered engine. It worked well for about 2 more months, then the existing hidden problems became not so hidden. I went to my mechanic after the engine developed an extremly rough idle. I was told that it needed motor mounts. My mechanic said it wasnt worth fixing since it had other serious problems. Such as: fuel pump 6lbs too low, 02 oxygen sensors need to be replaced, carbon build up in engine, fuel injection system is bad, need rear struts, rear brakes grinded down and need replacing, front rotors warped and need replacing, rough engine idle, smokey exhaust. This car sucks. Enough said. Just this morning I traded it in to a dealer and got a 1993 Buick Century. Its quite a switch from a T-bird to an "old man" buick, but this car (the Buick) is fast! Stomp on the gas and this thing flys! Its faster than the 'Bird.

Strength:

Great fuel economy for a V8, excellent power, inexpensive to modify and repair. Rear-wheel drive. Excellent brakes and competent handling. It makes a nice sleeper as well.

Weakness:

Strut suspension in the front is a pretty cheap setup for an otherwise quality automobile. This car should have been built with a dual A-arm setup. Posi-traction differential is a must if you drive in inclement weather or race.

Every time I drive this car I'm reminded how much I love it. It has all of the available options (love Ford power options such as seat, windows & locks - I have not witnessed another brand with comparable actuation and reliability; especially Chevy) and all of them still work. The driver's window motor has been replaced, and the passenger door lock solenoid also. Considering this vehicle has seen a lot of use and abuse (378,000 kms and still kicking asphalt) I'm quite impressed. I was also impressed with the delivery and total output of power from the 5.0 HO. I've driven many vehicles with a 5.0 or a 302, but none made me so eager to crack it open on the highway, or cruise beside someone and kick it down to show them a fleeting glimpse of my taillights as I barrel away. The automatic transmission seems to still shift firmly at WOT and rarely leaves me stuck in the wrong gear for a corner or whatnot. The handling is also very impressive for a vehicle of it's size and it responds well to my corner-carving abuse (I can't say the same about my tires). The independent rear-suspension definitely helps out in that department, seemlessly harnessing the power of the V8 and never stepping out without my consent. Speaking of that, it allows for beautiful, smooth powerslides in rain or on gravel that make you look like a stunt-driving hero. Admittedly, it's the car. I've tried it with many other vehicles and wasn't able to create the same effect without some jerking, squirming or bouncing of the rear-end. The ride is also impressive considering the cornering prowess of the vehicle. I should also add that I've upgraded to slightly stiffer Moog springs all around, with SensaTracs for damping. This didn't help the ride much, but it feels a lot tighter in the twisties. I will go for a shock with greater rebound damping in the future, however, as it tends to 'float' on large bumps. Not confidence inspiring. On the other hand, the four-wheel discs with ABS are just the opposite. I always no that whatever I get into or if I'm a bit over my head, I just mash the brakes and everything's back to normal in a hurry. The great stopping power will also help out with anyone having a slower reaction time to surprises. In a world of front-wheel drive crap, if you can find one of these, just buy it. Especially with the V8. You won't be disappionted.

the car had a minor leak in the washer fluid hose and a many hoses had to be tied down because of the speeds I go.

I purchased the car,but I have the need for speed so I hyped it up a little. Now I have it as a race car and it looks awsome.

Very fast. Almost scary. Nice interior, I like the way Ford put electronic everything in it. Great Motor.

The windows are a little annoying since they seem to stick ever once in a while. No cup holders. No posi-trac. No hood scoop.

I bought this car from a friend of mine and ever since owning this car I always have people wanting to race since it''s got a H.O. 5.0 Liter EFI motor in it. The new Mustang Gt(4.6 liter) doesn''t even compare to the older 5.0 Liter by far!
