Strength:
None compared to cougars!
Weakness:
None yet, except a sunroof that needs help to open. This is for all the PGT owners! When you see a Cougar, don't even bother racing it, it will smoke u. I have the cougar V6, and my brother recently bought the PGT (95). I drove both, and can tell you that the pickup on the cougar is way better, the handling is better, basically a way better car. We even dragged light to light and he lost badly. All in all, nice car, but not a match for the new cat on the block. |

Strength:
good acceleration (manual) decent design reliable engine this car has balls
Weakness:
expensive to repair expensive to customize ive seen probes with broken motors to the headlights, i have not experienced this problem i recommend this car to buy, once you put a few hundred dollars into it it can become a very fast car, i have put nearly 1000 dollars into it with my body kit, exhaust system, and combat wing with the engine i have a cool air intake with the stock v6 engine, if you decide to put money into this car it is a pretty good street racing car, of course if its a manual you could easily beat many cars such as i have such as honda civics, other probes, and eagle talons Similar Products Used: none this is my first car im only 16 how many cars do u think i should of had already |

Strength:
Strong mid range horsepower. Great gas milege. Will run if your not scared of it. Nice car with ground effects. easy to fix up. Great handling
Weakness:
Bad to over steer. cost a pretty penny to fix up though its worth.not a family car I love the mid range power of my car.Exellent gas milege. I think with a couple of mods it would be a great little car for racing. I read on post here that a person said don't buy this car for racing. I have to ask why not? I run the dickens out of mine.I can't count the number of car I have blown off the road. Yes that includes gmc, chevy, ford, honda you name it. To bet it all I have even ran with the gt on curvey roads. Similar Products Used: I used to own a 86 camero that couldn't run with this car. Don't get me wrong it would run but not with this car. |

base (2.0)
Strength:
-handling and suspension are excellent -aggressive exterior styling -2.0 has very decent pickup -Mazda based engine -no major problems w/car (yet) -paint is in good shape -nice control panel setup -good gas mileage -excellent trunk space (hatchback w/fold-down rear seats)
Weakness:
-stock radio/sound is terrible -if you want to race, don't buy this car -seats are not the most comfortable (esp. rear) -passenger window squeaks loudly on occasion -parts can be espensive Overall, this is a very good car. I have been most impressed with the handling. I like the fact that engine is basically borrowed from Mazda, and is not all Ford. For a small 4cyl., it is very peppy, but overall, not very fast. I also have an atx which holds the engine up to much if you want speed, but is adequate for regular driving. I would have gotten a GT, but they were too expensive (price, gas, insurance). This car has 57k on it and is running fine. The exterior is in fine shape, and the spoiler makes it look even better. The interior has been used well, but is in good shape. I got it from an adult owner who cared for it, which helps explain its condition. I looked at several comparable Probe's driven by teens that were really beat. This car is a lot of fun to drive, and I would definitely buy another (w/5sp) in the future. It is an inexspensive sports coupe with economy car ability. If its speed you want, however go for a GT or an import. Similar Products Used: I've only owned 2 other cars. 87 Plymouth Horizon- handed down from my dad- comparable to a go-cart or lawn tractor 93 Chevy Cavalier- cheap, reliable transportation but Probe beats it in every wa |

Strength:
- Great handling due to well thought out design and class-leading (for the time) 225/50VR16 tires & aluminum wheels - Close-ratio 5-speed contributes to "race car" feel - Quick acceleration - Good cargo capacity under hatch - Great driver's seat comfort and adjustability - Good reliability of later models
Weakness:
- Hood paint chips easily and small cracks become visible after four years - Expensive parts - Firm suspension can be tiring after driving a while in the city and contibutes to rattles - Some interior parts feel cheap, e.g. vents - Stock stereo system & speakers way below par - Could use taller 5th gear for better fast-cruise hwy milege - Rear seat cramped, but that's par for the course That 5-star rating takes into account the improved reliability of the later 2nd-generation models. As a Ford/Mazda hybrid, the Probe/MX-6 is the most relaible Ford and the least reliable Mazda, which tells you something about the different manufacturing processes of the two companies. Mazda contributes a nice engine and platform, while Ford took care of the styling and philosophy of the Probe (one of Ford's few strengths). Early years (93-94) had reliablility issues with ignition, rear brakes, and a few other minor items, but these had been largely cured by 1996. After five years of driving my '97 GT, the only major troubles were the A/C, a hole in the muffler, and a defective wheel bearing, which is generally no worse than the average Japanese car over the same period (except maybe for Toyota, but they're in a class of their own). For optimum performance you need to use 91 octane fuel (car might run a little rough on regular), and synthetic oil to keep the valve adjusters quiet. You should also use injector cleaner regularly to keep the engine running smoothly. This (plus the added insurance costs of driving a "GT") means the operating costs may be slightly higher than average, but for me it's worth it to drive a car that blends a fantastic driving experience with unique styling (it's more purpose-built than an Integra and far more refined than a Grand AM GT, for example). This car is great for long trips - smooth engine and a fantastic driver's seat with adjustable bolsters and lumbar support. The Convenience package added power seat cushion adjustment and a few other items like intermittent wipers - definitely worth it. 5-speed cars are better performers. The automatic has a habit of failing if you don't change the fluid every year. When it's time to replace the tires, buy something other than the original equipment Goodyears, which were great on smooth dry roads buy rode harsh on broken pavement and had poor wet traction. Same goes for the front brake pads - buy some street performance pads from a performance shop for less brake fade. Log on to www.probetalk.com for other upgrade ideas and maintenance tips. The Probe "replacement" '99-2002 Cougar is a nice car with similar specs on paper but is not as fast, is less sporty and has reliability issues. Despite being newer it is definitely not an improvement on the Probe. Similar Products Used: '99 Honda Civic Si, '91 Ford Escort GT |

Probe GT V6
Strength:
Good car if you take care of it with regular maintenance. Will last with high miles.
Weakness:
All parts expensive. If you can get an extended warranty up to 100,000 miles, go for it. Probably impossible now since they are so old unless you can find a company that will do it and there are a few. It also has a bumpy ride and loud inside. One someone has hit you in the rear, watch out for hidden and upcoming repairs especially if you have a sunroof. Started leaking when it rained. Great car with a take-off punch in second gear. I've had it for 8 years and have had the normal problems such as replaced one waterpump, and alternater twice. I have replaced the CV boots a few times and also the drive axles. Parts are expensive no matter part what you get. I have finally had a major problem with a piston and rod so I am retiring my car this week after all these years with 108,000 miles. Very low miles for this year. Repairs are too expensive to fix so I might as well get a new car. Overall a great vehicle with various issues after 85,000 miles every 3 to 6 months or so. Synthetic oil improved performance dramatically. Similar Products Used: Isuzu Impulse |

Good Looks,Fuel Economy, Peppy for 4 cyl, Handling, fun to drive, ride
Weakness:
Lack of rear seat room, 2.0 good but still needs 10-15 more hrspwr,Expensive to get repaired, Pop up headlights When i first read about the Ford Probe in Motor Trend i said to myself i got to have one of those. And thats exactly what i did a couple of years ago when i wanted to buy a different. Since i always wanted a Probe i found. I still like driving this car because the looks are still fresh despite those antiquated Pop up head lights which really show it's age. But i like the handling. Even the 2.0 engine is pretty quick with the auto tranny. Although not tuned for lowend performance it's still pretty peppy for a 4 cyl. The seats are comfortable. Gets good gas milage. Although very reliable it is though expensive to get sreviced and the sensors go bad. Similar Products Used: NONE |

Strength:
Styling (interior/exterior). Rear hatch versatility (i.e. can carry a lot of stuff for a 2+2). V6 engine is a gem. Handling is above average.
Weakness:
AC gets about as cold as Las Vegas in July. Brakes are just avg. Zero headroom with sunroof. P.S. Don't ever break the rear quater window(s)...can you say @#&$#!!! (i.e. it cost an ungodly amount to have it repaired). The car ride is adequate for a sporty vehicle (i.e. not to stiff). It accelates nicely with the V6, and pulls from 2500rpm on up. From behind the wheel the view of the road is excellent in all directions. Brakes could be better. All in all few challengers (maybe Mitsu's 2nd gen Eclispe for speed and Nissan's 240sx for handling) can total up their pros/cons and make anywhere near as compelling an arguement. Weakness:
No help from Ford. I am writing in regards to the 1997 Ford Probe that I have recently purchased in April of 2002 from Manderbach Ford in Reading Pennsylvania. I am a member of the United States Air Force and as you should know this means that I travel a lot. It is extremely important that I get to where I need to be on time whenever I maybe needed. I have had a problem for at least the past month now with the engine rotating but it will not start. This problem seems to happen when the engine is hot. The problem is that the car has let me sit different places now several times. I go back to get the car and it will start the next day before I even get a chance to take it to a garage sometime starts after few minuets. I am extremely upset with this Ford product I call Ford no help from them. The car is such a burden for me and I have to worry every time I go somewhere that I will get stuck and not return on time, which in the military is UNEXCUSABLE. As you can see I am very frustrated by this problem. I took the car to a Ford dealer and they couldn’t find anything wrong. I would like to know if any one has experienced the same type of problem and has any suggestions on how to fix this problem. Thank You Jan |
