Strength:
Solid and quiet, trouble-free, pretty decent mileage.
Weakness:
Front seats could be more comfortable. Poor resale value. Although I've read many reviews regarding problems with the Ford Focus, I have not experienced that first one. I have put over 54,000 miles on the car and couldn't be more pleased. It's still rock solid, handles great, and averages about 30 mpg. I did replace the Firestones that came on the car at about 42,000 miles. I moved from the 50 series that came on the car to a 55 series and ended up with not only a better ride, but the tires also fill up the wheel wells better. My only concern with the car is its resale value, which appears to be pretty poor. I'd be interested in trading for a new one but since it's only worth about 1/2 of what I paid for it, I will probably just keep driving it. |

Strength:
Very nice power for a stock car. 170 hp over the ZX-3's 140. Steering and braking is excellent. Fit and finish is very good. Very nice amount of standard features like power heated mirrors, steering wheel stereo controls, leather trimmed interior, temp. and oil pressure gauges. Six speed trans. is very nice(German Getrag) feels very tight. Fit and finish is very good. Very sound, tight car.
Weakness:
None really so far. Car idles high if you drive without letting it warm up for a minute. Dealer said this was normal. Also, it lags a little in acceleration(off the line). I hear this is a common problem. Great car for the money. You can tell the people at Ford and SVT put some time into this car. It is a shame they are not being produced for the 2005 model year. I've had mine for 6 months and already I have 11,000 miles on the car. The handling, braking and torque are very impressive for this car. It is simply a blast to drive. MPG is not all that bad at around 29(mostly highway). I worked for Ford at the time of purchase, so I got about $4,600 off, including the $3000.00 rebate from Ford, so the price was killer. I hope it continues to run well. I took the 5yr/75K warranty for peace of mind, since I have seen some of the earlier year reviews that have been posted. I really have no complaints yet. Strength:
The interior is nice and the trunk is spacious.
Weakness:
The rest of the vehicle as in under the hood. I purchased this car in Feb. My first ever brand new car. The first week I had the car my radio would not work. The dealership replaced it for me. The second week my engine light came on and my rear folding seat would not lock into place. I also noticed that they had not filed the metal in my trunk and had some items damaged by this oversite. I contacted the dealer who fixed it. I was informed that water had made the engine light come on. A month after this my engine would chuck when I drove 60km. I contacted another dealer to fix it and was told that there was no problem. When I went to pick up the vehicle I was told that the evr valve would need to be replaced which they did. One month after this my window and door and would not close properly. The rear folding seat would also not lock into place again. I called the dealer again and they fixed the problem and informed me that dust was getting into the parts of the vehicle and causing this problem. I asked how that much dust could get into the car and was told that from people carrying it on their shoes and from the vents. I was also told that my car was not a space ship and dust and other things can get into the vehicle. A week later my seat still was not locking into place I called my original dealership and they said that they would order a replacement part. A few months after that my engine began chucking (hesitating) again. I called my original dealership and got my salesman on the phone. He told me that it could be bad gas. He told me to run two tanks full of high test gas and see if that helps. I still had the problem running the car on high test. I still have not had my car fixed and I'm very frustrated that it won't be fixed. I contacted Ford customer service to see what they could do and I was left with a very negative impression. For my first new car I am quite disappointed with the performance and reliabilty of the car. Although I do like the compactness of it. The interior is nice and the stereo is really nice. I also like the trunk space. I can fit alot of stuff into it. As a young person this car is great. Similar Products Used: My Dad has a Ford F150 and he has never had problem. Ford Focus Wagon
Strength:
Transmission, gas mileage, room of a wagon, smooth handling, quick radius, nice basic features and interior.
Weakness:
On highway with windows open, the car can throb some with wind coming into the car. The seatbelts need to be covered in the back where they connect with the floor- my kids put their feet on them and tighten up the belt. I have not owned an American car in my life until this one and its a great car. It's actually a new 2005 model. Very smooth on the road, good gas mileage and priced very well for a small wagon. I checked it out because of consumer reports saying it was the best small car last year and I'm a believer. We got a manual with the German transmission and clutch and its smoother than my old Honda or Subaru. The new Subarus were just too much$$ and we needed a wagon with 30+ mpg. Its got the cuteness of a VW Jetta w/o the Mexican manufacturing nightmares. Ignore the pre-2003 Focus reviews - Ford has seriously turned it around. Weakness:
Any and everything under the hood This was my first NEW car. It had 30 miles on it when I purchased it and being 19 i was so excited. I loved the interior and the style of the car, but a month after purchasing it the car started making a funky noise every time I hit a bump. Any size bump, it could have been a pebble and the car sounded like it had fallen into a crater. Something about the bolts had split in half and the dealership fixed it. Well about 1 year later, the car started acting funny again. I would have a half of tank of gas and the car would either not start or would die like it had ran out of gas. Especially on cold mornings, the car would start and make it half way down the street and die. So there were many mornings me and my then 2 year old daughter had to walk in the cold back home to call for help to go get gas and add it to the half of tank that was already there. Well I took it to the dealership and they did not fix it on warranty, they charged me $849 to fix it. There were times that I had to push with all of my might to get my car in fifht gear b/c the clutch was not working sufficiently. If all of this was not bad enough, 13 months ago, I stopped to get me something to eat on my way to work and as I was driving off my car died and all of the lights starting blinking. I did not know what was going on until my passenger started yellng to get out of the car. Guess what? Smoke was coming from under the hood and when the hood was popped open there was a full blazed fire under the hood. My car was on fire right in front of my eyes. The fire was so intense that it burned a hole in the front windshield and another in the passenger floor board. Ford did not pay for a tow and did not want to take responsibility for the fire. The fire inspector determined that the fire was caused by a faulty battery cable, oh yeah b/c Ford company was attempting to say that it was intentionaly set. Even after they got the report they did not want to componsate me for their malfunction & wanted me to pay the remainder balance after the insurance which was $4000 & did not want to finance me another car until it was paid. I dealt with the Ford company for almost 3 months without any luck and had to get a lawyer. In June of this year Ford finally issued a settlement, however after still having to pay off the burnt up car, the lawyer and taxes I ended up with little more than what I had spent on that car in 1 year including my down payment. There is still one more lawsuit against the manufacturer and hopefully that will be done with this year. So would I recommend someone to buy a Ford Focus, no I would not b/c seeing my car burn up infront of my eyes and realizing that I could have been in there was one of the scariest things in my life up to this day. |

See above. Poor, Poor customer service. Hold on to your hats Focus owners because you will have problems. Like you I was happy when I bought my Focus. I took in for routine oil change and was told I had a front seal leak about 3 mos. after I bought it. I took it to the dealer and they didn't find the same thing but they did say they found a recall problem. Oil and coolent mixing together because of the faulty design. Brakes - I won't even go there but it cost me about $450.00 to get that taken care of. Next I was on the freeway and my car started fishtailing out of control because one of the faulty bolts had come broken but again Ford was not at fault. I made several calls to Ford and even sent a letter to the CEO but I got dismissed like I had been the one to cause the problems with the car. The latest problems was the engine went out at 80,000 miles. My dad has a Ford Explorer that he drove over 300,000 miles without a good maintenance record before he had to put in a new engine but my car 80,000 and I did take care of my car because I knew it was junk. Even my mechanic made the comment about the Focus and said you need to get rid of it. His small shop had repaired about 6 with the same problem. I am preparing to put on my gloves because this time I'm not going away. I am going to fight Ford because they know that this is a problem and that the Focus is a problem. It has to take someone dying like the tire problem before they will honor their word and back up their product. I hate Ford and would not recommend a Ford vehicle to my worse enemy. Weakness:
Really poor customer service and satisfaction!!! The car had been good for us mostly until the tires began to be a HUGE problem. After 20,000 km the back tires are completly worn out and the dealer refuses to honor the warranty and replace them. There is no reason that a front wheel drive car should have bald back tires after 20,000 km. On the tire manufacture website, Pirelli, the specific tires on our car are rated for 80,000 km. We are going to try go directly to Ford Motor Company, but are discouraged because of the lack of results we are getting from the dealer. We will not buy another focus (or Ford, for that matter) because they just don't seem to care about their customers and the warranty that we paid a lot of money for. We have since heard around that other Focuses have had a similar problem and no one has been able to get any compensation from Ford. It is a huge inconvenience for everyone and Ford will just keep loosing customers if they keep up this lack of customer satisfaction. Come on Ford, have you ever heard of needing new tires after less than 5 months of driving a small car to and from work!! Similar Products Used: F150 and 250 pickups |

None I loved this car. I was recently in an accident and it was totalled and I am devastated. I miss it so much. I bought it brand new 3 years ago and I never even had one problem with it. My mom recently bought a Jetta and says that she wishes she had bought the focus. It has so much power for such a little car. I have nothing bad to say about it. I would recommend a Focus to anyone!
