Smooth, impressive stereo, comfortable, roomy, great gas milage, quiet, handles nice, good turning radius, you can do almost amything to accessorise it... looks clean, headlights light up the road nicely, turn signal sound is unique, (reminds me of the lid to a snapple bottle) I just like it.

Weakness:

Uhhhhh... Ummmmm.... hmmmmm... can't think if any!!!

Overall I really am pleased with this purchase... I have always owned small cars, (ford probe, acura integra) and to have so much room in such a small car amazes me. The ride is like riding on a cloud... I am thoroughly pleased!

See summary. The car has let my wife and I down in every way possible. In 2 years it has been in for service 15-20 times for lots of different problems. Please do not buy a Ford. Ford does not seem to care that we are having these problems, they will not take responsibility for the defects in their vehicle.

Purchased new Focus LE at Kistler Ford in Toledo, OH in August 2002. My wife and I had problems with the car continuously for the two years we have owned the car. Three days after purchase my wife backed onto our street and the car stalled and would not restart. The car was towed to the dealer. They made an “adjustment” and it seemed fine. Two weeks later, the car began what is described as “erratic idle”. When the car is idling or when coming to a stop, the car shakes violently and acts like it will stall. We had the car in for service for this condition approximately 3-4 times. The dealer said there was nothing that could be done to fix this. They also said the computer showed that nothing was wrong with the car. This was unacceptable! I had Frank Kistler, owner of Kistler Ford, drive the vehicle and the head of the service department rode along also. Toward the end of our 15 minute drive, the car began to shake badly, both of them insisted that this was normal for a Focus. The car shook so badly, you could feel it through your entire body. The service manager asked me “when you bought the Focus, did you want a car that vibrates?” I of course said “no”. He then responded, “if you didn’t want a car that vibrates, you shouldn’t have bought a Focus”. After roughly 1 year of dealing with this problem, we took it to another dealer, and they fixed the problem. It still vibrates, but not nearly as bad. The latest problem is the transmission has a hard upshift and an intermittent slippage at lower speeds. It feels like the transmission is not grabbing. Also when shifting in the final gear at higher speeds, a “clunking” sound can be heard and felt. We took the vehicle to another dealer in Toledo, they drove and acknowledged the problem, but they cannot fix. They say “there is no verifiable evidence of a problem”, meaning there is no code in the computer. The dealer puts the blame on Ford, saying Ford will not pay for repair/replacement of the transmission, with no code to reference. Sorry to be so wordy, but I need to get the message out there. My wife and I could not be more unsatisfied with a vehicle. It has let us down in every way possible. We have been to 3 dealerships in two years for a variety of problems, some have been fixed to satisfaction, others haven’t. We have contacted Ford Motor Company about some of these problems and we have got no results. Ford does not support the products it sells! My wife has owned nothing but Ford vehicles her entire life and has been generally satisfied, until we bought the Focus. We will never buy another Ford product.

Get a lot of car for the money, great handling, good headlights, good brakes, good steering, responsive and reliable engines, good transmission, nice interior, can modify them any way you want

Weakness:

Could use more horsepower or torque compared to more recent cars on the market, dealership service and warranty isn't the greatest after 60,000 km's

I try and reccomend these cars to everyone that I can. Despite the FOcus having a lot of problems involving recalls, my own has not been subject to ANY of them. Only problem I had with the car in the last 10 months was the A/C system had some washers that cracked in the winter and leaked out the refridgerant. Besides that, I've put a set of awesome tires on it, a few things under the hood, and the start of an aftermarket stereo. The car steers very well, brakes are fantastic, the handling is nimble, almost go-kart like, the engine runs smooth and strong through the entire rpm range, throttle response is crisp and strong. The interior is superior to any other cars in it's pricerange, the seats are more comfortable and bolstered better, the gearbox and clutch are light and smooth like a european car, etc etc. Another thing to note that's great about the Focus...the Tuner aftermarket for them is growing like crazy all the time...you can do just about anything you want to them, now that they've been around for a few years and are obviously staying around.

...have yet to find one...

Honestly, I would recommend a Focus to anyone who would ask. I bought a used 2000 Focus a little over a year ago and have put well over 30,000 miles on my car since then. I have not had a single problem with the car. I don't understand all these bad reviews and people saying they will never buy a Ford again. If the cars are really that bad, how can the get CAR AND DRIVER 10 BEST for the past 5/6 years? Its not just given to them as a favor, the Focus has earned its spot.

It's amazingly comftorable to drive...even in the 12 hour sets from colorado to ohio...The Stereo system is awesome when you want to blast your music....the gas mileage is great...the trunk is huge...The design is great too, there's plenty of room...it always seems to be my car we take on random road trips...and you absolutely can't beat the price....I love this car

Weakness:

The dash does get dusty a lot quicker than most other cars and if you want to have a conversation with the radio on you have to turn it down to 1 and even then it's hard for people in the back to hear

This car is wonderful. I bought it a little over a year ago and it still runs just as well as it did then. I've taken it over the passes of Colorado countless times. It has just as much pick up and go as most of the hondas, acuras and other cars in it's class. Before me it was owned by a family that had taken care of any recalls, they only sold it because they needed more room for their growing family. I've taken this car from Colorado to Ohio and back and had absolutely no problems with it. Unlike the other reviews here, I've had the said gas mileage and then some. Usually about 38 on the highway and 32 in town. On the subject of tires, they wear fine if you rotate them regularly, not a big deal.

Weakness:

Too many mechanical problems. runs rough hesitates and stalls. sqeeking brakes, sqeeking belts, Mechanics can't seem to fix most problems, very poor customer service. will not buy ford again

I would really like to love this car, but I am finding it near impossible. I like having a wagon but way too many mechanical problems that the ford techs can't seem to work out. Several recalls make me nervous.. I DO NOT FEEL SAFE DRIVING THIS CAR!! We purchashed this car in a hurry without researching and we are regretting it terribly it has high kilometers and we bouth it second hand but that does excuse all the problems we've had.

the last ford i will ever buy! 4 recalls so far and counting, you can not roll the back windows when the car is moving or it sounds like a helicopter is landing on your roof, dealer says, we have a couple of models that do that, nothing we can do about it. brakes squeak, dealer says, "you know this was engineered for europe and they like being able to hear their brakes", ????????? how can you argue with that. you better rotate those tires every 6000 miles or they will be chewed up in less that 10,000. driver door sensor defective, dealer replaced after 3rd complaint. power side mirrors failed right after the 36,000 warranty. sticker said about 30 mpg, the best i ever did on the highway was 22 mpg. rear hatch leaked, dealer did fix that. would you say i was not satisfied with this purchase? well i took a $2000 hit to get out of it and bought a honda.

Everything but the valvestem seals!

Why oh why did they put a Ford badge on this thing? I have known Yugo owners that were happier with thier cars. Where to start.... Uhh, the gas mileage is horrid. 27 mpg on the highway, and I think it was about 18 in town with the A/C on. The car studdered from the day I drove it off the lot. The rear brakes never quit squealing and the Ford dealer finally gave up and told me they couldn't do anything. Handling? what handling? The body sits too high above the wheels, so once the body moves, so does the whole darn car.... right off the road. Power? 140 hp? WHERE? Don't dare turn on the A/C while going up a hill you will lose all your speed. Brakes? PFFFT. yes it eats them, and warps the rotors, which were only dealer parts. Alignment? Like every Ford I've ever owned, it came from the factory with the alignment hosed. The dealer couldn't get it right and no outside shops had specs. The dealer couldn't find the source of the antifreeze smell that invaded the cabin on every 100 degree day. If you go through a puddle that is more than 4" deep it gets the drive belt wet and you lose power steering. Comfort of seating? If I wanted a Lazyboy lounge chair with a flat bottom big enough to set an 800lb butt without touching the sides, this is the car. Don't look for any bolster support for you hips or sides. Do you enjoy being on a first name basis with your local Ford service manager? This is the car for you!!!
