Comfort, Cabin Space

Weakness:

Kinda old, things are wearing out

First off, I am 17 years old and a high school student. I did not want this car because of the image it projected but driving it will change your mind. The car is very comfortable. The front seats are broken in and fit just right. Although the car is old, it still performs. The speedometer only reads 85mph but I know from experience that it will reach at least 100mph (that little needle will reach the fuel gage if you try hard enough!). The handling is very loose in this car. The rear-end sways but you only notice if you are having a bad day. With a little practice though, the loose ride can be fun. I have driven this car with only slight pressure of one of my fingers, its that loose. The space in side of the car is amazing. I have fit almost eight people inside of my car and had room for all of our soccer equipment in the trunk. You can fit the damndest things in that trunk. Oh yeah, the transmission in older model Crown Vics have a problem with a 4th to 3rd gear kick down. When you hit 45 the gear shifts to 4th and then kicks into 3rd. You feel a jolt and then it shifts back into 4th and continues on its way. Don't know why it does it but it always has. I think its a ford transmission thing because our f-150 does it to. The girls don't like the car but I do. If you're looking for a car that is safe, comfortable, and spacious then the Crown Vic is for you.

Strength:

Best car I've bought. It was used with 25,000 miles on it and have had no problems with it what so ever. It's roomy inside and comfortable and can seat 6 people pretty good. All controls are easy to get to and use. The car provides you with a smooth and quite ride. Car has plenty of power even without the police package. Can pull the mountains going to Reno at 80 with no problem. The car handles pretty good for a large car. Has alot of trunk space. Best gas mileage was 26 per gallon on highway.

Weakness:

The door jam should be back a few inches to make it easier to get in & out of.

I would recommend this car to anyone who wants comfort and needs alittle power to boot. Great for long trips. Nice looking car for the price and very dependable.

Strength:

The car does have a lot of room & is really comforable; Lots & lots of usuable trunk space; comfortable ride; V-8 engine has a lot of power.

Weakness:

What I didn't like about this car? Lots. The first thing I noticed is that paint job started to peel only 4 years after I bought the car & I had it repainted for approx $1000.00 without any help from Ford (Fast Only Rolling Downhill). They had a secret goodwill warranty which I didn't even know about until after I had the car painted. Why bother arguing with Ford because they will just give you a run-around. (Similar problems have appeared on other Ford products so it may be wide spread) The anti-lock braking system broke down long ago & is too expensive to get fixed. The gas filled shock sensor was defective & I had to drive it for a few years with temporary fixes such as having my mechanic manually fill the shocks to jiggling the gas shock switch in the trunk to get the shocks to fill & the car to raise. My car actually sank several inches intermittantly because the sensor was faulty. One time I bottomed out while hitting a bump & I felt that the car was almost scraping the ground. This happened especially when there were passengers in the back seat.
The air-conditioning konked out & when I went to get it fixed, I had to pay thru the nose because of the new regulations with the type of coolant (CFC free) & I had to get the air conditioning unit converted.
The passenger side power window unit quit 4 years after I bought the car & the driver side power window unit quit 2 years after that. When the latter happened, the belt snapped & the window dropped like a rock. My mechanic said I was lucky the window didn't shatter & that the faulty power window motor didn't do more damage to the inside of the door.
The door instrument panel came loose & I had to glue it back on.
I'm sure that there is a lot of faults I am missing but I vow never to buy a Ford again.

I would not recommend this car because of all the inherant faults in the car. I've also owned a civic & although it is in a different class, it had nowhere near the same amount of problems. Every time something went wrong with the car, I generally had to wait an average of one week for the correct part to be sent in from Toronto. It is very inconvient to always have to bring your car into the shop for anything other than routine maintenance. The Civic I owned was actually built in Alliston, Ontario so it is curious that a North American built "import" is so much more reliable that a North American built "domestic". I used to swear never to buy Japanese but when it hit you in the pocketbook, you look really hard at your preconceived notions. Some people blindly go on buying American for the principle but if more people don't voting with their pocketbook, the mediocrity of the product will persist. Although comparable imports generally costs more, the time & effort you save in the future by not having to repair your car every month is well worth it.
I have a friend who works at a domestic dealership service department & he sees time & again the same problems popping up with the domestic vehicle. When he has to do an inspection on a vehicle trade-in, he is instructed to find all faults in order to lower the allowance the customer is allowed to get. When he has to inspect imports he rarely finds anything wrong & frequently they have upwards of 100000kms on the odometer. He just tells me, "buy a Honda, you can't go wrong." This from a person who works at a domestic dealership!
One sure sign of the quality of the domestic vehicle is by looking at the depreciation rate. Domestic car values drop like a rock compared to the imports. The depreciation rate sends a signal to the marketplace by informing the customer which cars are more desirable with the better vehicles having the lower depreciation rate. Here is an example of the customers "voting" with their pocketbook by their willingness to pay more for a better car.
One good thing about owning a domestic vehicle is the service you receive at the dealership. Import dealerships have grown arrogant and lazy because they feel they can live off the favorable reputation of their vehicles. They know their vehicles are desirable thus don't have to put much of an effort to "sell" their vehicles & if something truly does go wrong with the vehicle, they seem incredulous & doubt if there is a problem. Domestic vehicle salespersons make more of an effort to sell you a car because they have too in order to get you to buy an "inferior" product. If you do have a warranty problem, they generally are really generous & allow a "free" fix. Trying to get an import dealership to do this is like pulling teeth. They resist & imply it was your fault. Luckily, with an import, you rarely have to visit the service department for warranty service.
As you can probably tell, I have had a bad experience with my Ford & it will be a long time before I buy another Ford again. I am willing to risk the "chance" of having to face an arrogant Import service department by buying a Honda over the "sure thing" of visiting a friendly Domestic service department by buying a Ford. At least with the Ford you will most likely get a yearly friendly recall notice. I guess it shows that they care.

Strength:

Roomy, Comfortable, Fast, Safe

Weakness:

Gas milage, Lousy window regulator design

I paid $1500 at a police auction with 80K on the odometer (note that this is the 5.0 version). This came with the police package which includes: dual exhaust, steel safety rims, fail-safe cooling system, and heavy duty frame.

The only real regret that I have about this car is the use of gas. I could never get over 20 MPG even during highway driving. The acceleration and pickup were decent and handling was pretty good considering that my last car was a 1990 626 LX.

Inside the Crown Vic really performs. There is plenty of leg space in both front and rear compartments. The climate controls are designed so that even a trained monkey could use them. The bench seats in the front could stand to use a little more lateral support. From what I've seen and felt, the 1999 Crown Vics have the same problem, but to a lesser extent. The major design flaw with the interior of the vehicle is the window regulator in all fords up to 1999. Due to the poor design, every Ford car with power windows up to 1999 is destined to fail. Luckily, there are kits availible to correct this problem.

I would recommend this car for anyone who desires a powerful rear-wheel drive car with plenty of room to sit 6 people in relative comfort. I am so pleased with this car that my next purchase will probably be a 1998 or 1999 Crown Vic.

My '99 Crown Vic is the best highway cruiser on the planet. Unbelievable 23MPG!!! Unrivaled power, room, and comfort. Looks are very distinguished, projects a professional image. This is not an old people car! I'm not even 40! My commute is over an hour each way, and this is the vehicle for it. Get her out on the highway and let her stretch her legs. MSRP was 26k, got it for 20k.

Strength:

Power, ride, comfort, reliability, and it's nailed together great. Great value for the money.

Weakness:

Power steering is to light for a good road feel.

Paid $22,300 from a list of $28,000. One can get great dealer discounts from most dealers on this car. I have put 60,000 miles on this car and aside from replacing the front brake pads have had no trouble with it. It is a very quiet, comfortable car that is a great value. When compared to its competition; the V8-rear wheel drive at thousands less wins out. I would recommend this car for anyone with a three person or more family. One can have a child seat in the back and still seat two adults in the back with no problems. As for the trunk; it's huge. Room for the stroller and all the "mall" packages you can buy. No wonder the cops and taxi drivers buy this car. Would I buy another? Well...if I can ever wear this one out; you bet.

This car is excellent basic transportation: low-rev V8 torque & power, roomy, comfortable, quiet, nimble, big trunk, strong AC, fast defrost, rear wheel drive, unpretentious, doesn't attract attention.

Weakness:

Well, I bought this car new in '92, have put 142,000 miles on it, and I still can't think of a weakness.

I would echo the other review comments. I paid $18,500 for the car ($3,500 off MSRP). Between 120K and 140K I had to replace some components (ignition module, alternator, plug wires, wiper motor, wiper washer pump, power window motor), but the car still drives & looks new. We recently adopted 2 more kids (total 5) and bought a Venture in Jan 2000. But we decided to keep the Vic for all the driving we do alone (like commuting & errand-running) or with just a couple of kids. The car is worth way more to me than what anyone would pay for it, and it's cheap to insure & pay taxes on. If all goes well, I'll pass it on to my kids in 4 more years. What a great car this has been.

everything

Weakness:

nothing

We bought our Crown Victoria about 1 Month ago. It is simply great! The power is excellent and the breaks are fantastic, practically everything on the car is perfect! I paid $8,000 for this beauty but it fells like I'm driving a $40,000 one. One of the very small weaknesses is the gas mileage because it uses lots of it but every part of the ride is worth the price. This is the ideal car if you have a 4 or 5 person family and want a car that will give no problems. You should not buy this car is you are looking for a low gas mileage car.
