Strength:
More power than Civics and other imports. Handles well.
Weakness:
Wind noise is pathetic. Car pretty much has been falling apart since I got it. Parts are expensive, and I've been waiting for coolant lines for 4 months. Brake pads fell apart (friction material separated from actual pad) I could go on, but to sum it up, I dont trust the car as far as I could throw it (which isnt far).. Crap!!! I bought the car because my 93 colt was getting too expensive, unfortunitally, the 5 year newer neon is worse. Parts I've replaced: fuel pump, head gasket, rear struts and mounts, numerous front end parts, radiator, coolant lines... Similar Products Used: 93 Colt 94 Civic |

head gasket, ac and engine mounts To start of talking about the Neon; let me tell you that I have researched it quite a bit. It seems that there are some out there with alot of problems. This doesn't matter to me and I'll tell you why later. One of these problems is the head gasket leaking. One is the AC. There are various other promblems too. Some people report no problems. I wonder if this has to do with the ones manufactored in Mexico and the ones made in Michigan? To find out where it is made just look at the 11th digit of the VIN#. If it is a "T" it is made in Mexico. The reason the main problems don't matter to me is because. I plan to replace the whole engine with a 2.4 liter pt cruiser engine. You can get one of these used with low milage rather cheap and the conversion kit with the engine mounts is very cheap. The price for all of this is probally around what you would pay to have the engine rebuilt. If you are wanting a fast car for alot less this is the way to go. |

Build quality For a first car, it's not that bad. I wanted something with a bit more power but the pickup is good with a five speed. I haven't had the head gasket problem and my car has 83,000 miles now. The a/c is crap. The factory radio is crap too. The trunk lid leaks into the trunk when it rains and the seals around the windows make highway travel louder than it has to be. I've put some underbody lights and the clear Altezza lights on to try to make it "cool" but it needs more work than that. |

Premature Transmission failure, 8 weeks to replace was without my new vehicle. Spoke to CEo of Chrysler Canada he said what do you think I can do about the 8 week delay and hung up on me! Premature failure of Motor and Transmission mounts, This should be a sfety recall to protect the public! purchased new from dealer. 6months later transmission failed waited 8 weeks for new transmission.took it in recently for noise from transmission.told enginge and transmission mounts all need to be replaced and front bearings gone. Took it to an different garage not dealer told bearings fine motor mounts worn but he found both tie rod ends about to fall off wheel, i saw them myself while on hoist and had him replace them. Went back to dealer he said motor mounts are not under drive train warranty. Well they suppoert the complete drive train this is a safety issue and should be a recall for the safety of the public"dont by one!!!! |

Great handeling, view, mobility, gas.
Weakness:
Foggy headlights, squeaky brakes, air conditioning, battery. I had always wanted a Dodge Neon and finally when I turned 18 I got one. I love this car to death. Great handeling, pretty good gas mileage. Not much room in the backseat, which friends tell me isn't that comfortable. My car has the standard wear and tear for a neon: foggy headlights, pretty bad paint chipping, loud and squeaky breaks. I've had to replace the battery, and the air conditioning doesn't work (have had to put the new style freon three times now) and the fogginess in the plastic head lights is quite annoying. But I really do love this car - it was a great first time car...always felt very safe in it. Similar Products Used: none |

Very cute body style (all models) Fun to drive (when it's not broken) Good gas mileage Older Neons are great starter cars for beginner drivers Parts are fairly cheap (thank God)
Weakness:
The paint sucks The head gasket sucks ($900 repair) I have had my Neon Expresso since I was 17 and it had 80,000 miles on it when I bought it. I am now 19 and broke because my car is a piece of crap. So far, I have replaced the head gasket (a recalled part, but only fixed for you if your car has less than 60,000 miles) the exhaust manifold because mine had a crack, A/C has been fixed twice, idle motor has been replaced along with the wireing to the idle motor because they don't make the old wireing any more, numerous belts (that squeel when my A/C is on) and other minor parts. At the moment, my car has 120,000 miles on it and it is burning oil at a rate of about a quart every week and is smoking. My mechanic said I can rebuild the engine now, or wait until it blows, and then rebuild it. Did I mention it costs over $2000 to rebuild an engine? My car isn't even worth that much. I have already put in over $1500 into it in two years, and I am not putting in any more. Did I also mention my paint is peeling on the trunk and the roof? This was my Neon horror story, but I have two friends that have a 1999 and 2001 Neon, and both bought them used about two to three years ago, and neither have had a single problem. So I guess it depends on which Neon you buy and if you buy a lemon or not. I know I did. My philosophy is planned obsolesence is taking over. Planned obsolesence is when manufacturers build death into the life of a product. Neons are not made to go over 120,000 miles. In the Neon owner's manuel, there is a timeline of what you should do at certain mileages to help your car last. The timeline stops at 120,000 miles. If you buy a Neon, buy a newer one and drive it until it dies, that's the best method for buying cheap cars. Even after my horror story, I am looking for 2002 Neon ES as we speak because they seem to have few problems. The choice is yours. |

Good pick up.
Weakness:
Brakes are lousy I traded in my Dodge Neon 2000 for a new Neon 2002 thinking I would get a better deal - wrong answer. The same problems are happening all over again. The main problem are my brakes. They squeak and scrub all day long (loud). Sounds are coming from the back brakes. I've taken this car in to Chrysler at least 5 times. They either say "they don't hear anything or it's normal, or something about abestos padding that's not used anymore." I am really fed up, and embarrassed about this car, but do to finances I can't do another trade any time soon. They get my money and I can't get no satisfaction. I hope some one is out there listening. I hate this car :-( Similar Products Used: Neon 2000 |

Quick Great Value Lots Of Room
Weakness:
Engine Noise Paint The Neon is a great car. I have the standard 5 speed transmission and it boasts quite a bit of pickup for a Neon. It's a nice ride, and plenty of room in the front & back. I have a pair of subwoofers in the trunk and I still have rum to put a golf bag in, even 2. The engine performs well. At about 28,000 miles it started jerking around, so I bought some new spark plug wires and it was fixed, simple as that. Only spend $40, so far nothing else has gone wrong. You get a bit of engine noise in the cabin, but nothing too loud. I notice lately that the paint job isn't the best, but hey I only paid 12,000 brand new. There are a few spots here and there on the car, looks to be like small almost unnoticable rust spots. I may get the car repainted in a year or 2. Overall, the car is a great value and hasn't given me any trouble. Similar Products Used: None |

Could have alittle more power. This has been a super great car I have not had to do any work to it since I bought it. It had 92,000 when I bought it now it has 111,000 all it needed was brakes. My door sticks sometimes no big deal. This would make any teen a great car to drive. Very cheap on gas gets around 300 miles to a full tank. A/C can be a problem when you're on the highway, other than that no problems whatsoever! This was my first car that i ever owned.. and with my limited budget, i thought this would be a great buy and indeed it was! Although i haven't owned it as long as the others, I'm loving everything there is about this car. I'm considering on customizing it soon. Only problem is the a/c which can pull down your acceleration a bit but just leave the windows open and you ll be fine. If you own a neon and want to know more about it, go to www.neonsonline.com and we'll be happy to help you out! Similar Products Used: None |
