I thought I loved the neon....not any more!
Weakness:
Everything is going wrong with it! I thought I loved my neon... until this year. Now I have had to replace my gauge cluster unit, my brakes are always squeeking when it is damp outside, my air conditioner is acting up, my oil sending unit has gone, and NOW to top it off, my head gasket needs to be replaced. |

Good on gas BUT I haven't saved any in the long run because of the expense of having everything fixed. I don't know if any improvements have been made to the newer models but mine has caused me nothing but headaches and financial trouble. I bought my car 2 yrs. old and it is very well maintained and has low mileage. -head gasket went few months after I bought (covered under warranty), but huge hassle from dealership to have it fixed. -trunk leaks (should have known when I bought it & the dealership had put airfreshner in the trunk). - breaks have been repaired twice and need it again. - speakers blew - more recently (last week)my mechanic says my catalytic converter has a hole in it (apparently it's not covered under the warranty - yikes! more expense) - last month it was stolen, police advised me that Neons are notorious for the ease in which a theives can jimmy their way in and break the steering column and they are frequently targeted for that reason. My biggest problem - I can't get rid of the damn thing, nobody wants it! It wouldn't be worth it for me to trade it back to the dealership. |

Every aspect of the car sucks! I am trading it in this weekend. THIS IS THE WORST CAR EVER MADE!!! I have the same problems many others have. I have a large gap in the window area(can't go through the car wash without holding a towel to the window). My brakes sound horrible in the moist air. I can't drive my car in the rain because it cuts off!! Stay away from Neons!! |

Cute looks, good pick-up as long as you have the a/c off, good amount of space, good value for the money.
Weakness:
Headgasket, wind-noise due to having no window frame, and leaks. I bought my neon(its blue with sliver and black detailing)brand new in late 1998 with only 114 miles on it. It was my first new car and it was perfect for me as I was going into college. I have had the headgasket issue and it was taken care of last week. I printed all these reviews and took them to the dealership and they ended up doing it for $200 rather than the $850 they originally said it would cost. I also had to have the windows re-sealed because everytime I went through a car wash water would get in. All in all this car has treated me well considering it was only $10,000. Everything! Without a doubt, the worst car I have ever had! I have had the head gasket replaced 3 times, had 6 batteries in the car, the window seals are gone, drags with the air on...need I go on! Nothing but problems since the day I bought it. |

Price Body style (so sad the new Neons look more and more like others cars) Starts well rain or shine Nice pick-up. Maintains speed well uphill Efficient A/C (important when it's regularly 100+ in the summer) Roomy interior for the size OK gas mileage
Weakness:
Not enough pick-up when running the A/C Noisy engine Window seals not tight Woh! I was reading these reviews in hopes of finding what the problem is with mine that's been in the shop for almost 2 weeks. The fuse that controls the alternator and some sensors keep blowing but they don't know which causes the problem. Anybody had that? Yes, I have the headgasket replaced, the wind noise is bad, the breaks are loud and I have to turn the air-conditioning off if I want pick-up. Ah I forgot: I locked myself out of my car 5 times already (I know how embarassing!), fortunately I can break-in through the rear window with a good ol' hanger... It takes me 30s. What do you expect for $6,300?? Apart from that I've been pretty happy with my Neon for the past 3.5 years. Now reading all those reports and nearing 80,000 miles I'm wondering if I should find another car before mine starts falling apart...although my friends 's Hondas, Toyotas and likes seem to be in the shop as often as me... cute great gas mileage comfortable even on long trips
Weakness:
unreliable bad resale value cost of constant repairs A dealer recently said to me that there have been so many advances with cars that there's no really bad cars on the market right now. I think he left out this car. I bought this car with 43,000 miles, it now has 73,000 and will soon be someone else's problem. Although my problems echo everyone elses I couldn't not warn people enough against this car. A poster said that with regular maintenance this car is fine. My neon has always had its oil changed at 3000 miles and it's always been brought in for repairs. The head gasket went just a few days after its warranty ran out, the transmission struggles every spring (my mechanic claims this is because rust builds up, from lack of use, causing the car not to shift into gear properly, but I drive it almost every day out of the week), the battery died, the breaks squeak horribly if there's any moisture in the air, the trunk leaks, the paint is peeling, the speakers blew, the radio overheats and shuts off. Basically I'm now worried about leaving my driveway since it now stops running in the rain. I'm so glad that it's being traded in tomorrow. This was my first car so parents if you're thinking of buying this for your kids pick a more reliable one. Similar Products Used: 2000 nissan altima (my new baby) |

Great cold A/C, pretty good factory speakers, very roomy for economy car, nice dash, lots of cupholders!
Weakness:
CRAPPY brakes, fuel economy (only about 22 mpg, wears down tires quickly, engine loud at high speeds I have had this car for about 2 years now, and it has been pretty reliable. Being a college student, it is a good deal for what I paid (about 10000). My only major complaint is the brakes; they do not like water very much---just a little wet, they squeak and grab LOUDLY. However, the AC is really cold, and has stayed that way since I got it, haven't needed any coolant. The pickup is ok, but only when the AC is off. All in all, its not a bad car for, say, a college or high school student, but I wouldn't recommend it for families. Similar Products Used: none |

I could have made the trunk into a fish tank, I hope the newer models took care of that problem. Windows pull back easy, BAD neighbors can slip coathanger through and unlock door. Don't bother installing a fancy sterio. This is a well built little car with some bad seals. I bought the car at 70,000 miles and after new break pads it was in great shape. The motor I have had no trouble with; it starts every time, even during a blizzard. Transmission and electrical are working nicely. The body looks sharp even with a few scratches. The acceleration is decent at best. It handled a 1000 mile road trip over the weekend to northern Minnesota with no problem other than a runaway hub cap. My only complaint is some leaks. I had water leak into the trunk a few times. It flooded the rear seat wells and started a pond in the spare tire compartment. I tore out the trunk lining and found two vents above the wheel wells that the water was coming through. Also the seal around the tail lights wasn't the best. A tube of silicone sealant took care of the problem. Also, I've had two radios stolen because the window pulls back enough for a coat hanger to fit through. The newer models I see took care of the door problem. The only significant work needed was replacing the catylic converter at 82,000 miles. These are nice little cars, I reccommend the newer models which have framing ABOVE the door windows. Similar Products Used: 95' Escort. Good college car. |
