Strength:

Sporty appearance, good acceleration, roomy insode compared to other cars in the class.

Weakness:

At 5000KM (2500Miles) the head gasket went. The dealer said that oil was leaking in the antifreeze and that the head gasket wasnt properly set at the factory. My question is why did it take this long to notice if it wasnt set right. THe night i was driving home on highway temp. gauge just shot up and white steam came from the hood and i pulled over and was towed in.

Appearance wise, it''s a sporty neon. It has 16" alumimum rims, spoiler. It also came with cd changer. Except the HEADGASKET.

good gas mileage

Weakness:

The service engine light is warning sign of small and major problem. The chip is easy to reset; and mechanic has no ideas when there is problem.

Problem with this Dodge Neon started at 24,000 miles with the Service Engine Light, need the EKG repair. Replace gasket around 40,000. Major repair at 75,000 + mileages: alternator/new battery/corrision of battery cables, water pump, oil leak, replace the front crank seals, timing belts, drive belts, transmission leaking at the pean seal, collerlines leak/trans pam is leaking oil, replace front brakes and rotors, rear brakes/adjustment and wear out tires.

I''m still trying to think of something.

Weakness:

head gasket. electrical problems. The company that builds this crap has the audacity to try to pass if off as transportation instead of recalling and fixing the problems

Well I''ve waited long enough to make a judgement. I think I''m ready to put my 2 cents worth in. First of all I think it is important to point out that this car is not an american built car. That''s right! It is a mexican built car with some american electronic parts in it. If you don''t believe me just look inside the driver side door jam, it will say chrysler/mexico. It is the typical stubborness of the big 3. They know they have a defective head gasket and what do they do? Instead of replacing the gasket for free by having a recall on all affected models they allow the dealerships to charge the crap out of their customers for the fix. I own a 98 with 48,000 miles on it and guess what? You guessed it the head gasket is leaking oil and is in the shop currently being replaced at a charge of $565.00. That''s cheaper than what some people are being charged. What a raquet! Chrysler should be embarrassed for their lies and unaccountability. Oh yea, the sunroof won''t work now. Many of chryslers vehicles are produced in Mexico now. Are they passing on the savings to the consumer? On the contrary, they are just gonna stick it to us as long as we let them. The gov''t should have let them sink instead of bailing them out in the 80''s. This is the way they repay the american public for all the tax dollars we gave them.

Strength:

Sporty-looking, fairly zippy for a 4-cylinder, handles very well.

Weakness:

Noisy engine, brakes are spongy and squeaky from the factory, door glass binds in cold weather, wipers don''t line up with window properly, notorious head gasket problem, many others noted in other reviews.

I''ve put about 40000K on my ''98 4-door, and I''m just starting to discover all those annoying little faults, plus a few big expensive ones. At 85000K, rear seal and head gasket both went in the last 3 months. It''s good looking and fun to drive, but very cheaply built. I''m unloading mine for something of better quality and reliability.

Weakness:

No real weakness other thatn A/C

We bought this car new in May of 94. We have driven the car everywhere. It has almost 190,000 original miles and is still running great. I have NEVER had any problems with the car. The most major problem was the A/C has a leak. It is a manual transmission and that is the only type of neon that i would recommend. the auto has only a three speed. also the car is still extreme fast, it will still squall the ties in 2nd gear. Great acceleration. i havent put any extras on the car except cd player and subs. eventhough it has 190,000 miles as of jan 2002 we it sills gets about 35 mpg on the highway and 28 on the road. The sporty look and how dependable it has been made this a great first car for me. Matter of fact we liked the car soo much that we bought another one, and then my brother bought one after he was married.

The Dodge Neon is one of the better priced econo car on the market. You cannot get this much car for the dollar. The CD changer is unique as it can be controlled by the factory radio. Wow, what a sound system that comes in the Neon. You will not be dissappointed.

Strength:

decent styling, adequate power, good handling, relatively cheap price

Weakness:

degradeable engine, poor paint and finish, electrical problems, a whole host of other minor complaints

I sort of have a love-hate relationship with my 1995 neon. Mostly it''s hate. I feel love when everything works fine, even if it''s only for a few days. I have had significant problems with this car so anyone buying a used vehicle be prepared. I have had almost every gasket leak.....unfortunately all after the 3 year warranty period. The only gasket still intact is the oil pan gasket. The repairs have all been fairly major and so have end up costing quite a bit of money (~3000cdn). The suspension has broken 3 different times (strut failure). There have been quite a few other problems: loose motor mounts, loose driveaxle nut, exhaust donut failure, egr system malfunction, fuel injector problems, instrument cluster failure.......there''s probably a whole lot more but i forget. Now, for the good side.....when everything is working it can be a fun car to drive. The handling is quite good though you will need to upgrade the stock tire/wheel combo. The power is not bad either but requires fairly aggressive driving to get good performance on the SOHC. This power comes at a price however.....the engine is not very smooth and it is extremely loud. Shifting can be abrupt because of the way the engine delivers power under acceleration. You can drive it smoothly but it takes effort. At low revs if you step on the gas there is hesitation and then it will lurch if you are not gentle with the accelerator. Some of you may be thinking this is just poor driving on my part....it is not. The paint finish is very poor and subject to delamination. It started to happen after about 3 years.....it is not covered by warranty. I have been into my dealer enough times that I know most of the service advisor''s names.....so if you are looking to meet some new people, then a neon might not be such a bad idea afterall. I bought this car in the first place because it was cheap and it has certainly lived up to the reputation that Chrysler "enjoyed" with their K-car. The neon is a derivative of the K-car and as such is a low quality econobox that will give you more grief than delight and will invariably prove costly to repair after the long haul. I am praying that my neon will last another 3 years without draining my bank account and then I will buy a much better car. You do get what you pay for
