everthing else Bought 1999 intrepid in march of 2000 w/an Extended warranty. Changed oil regularly every 3000 miles or 6 months, which ever came first. Have had no major problems until about 4 months ago when the transmission started to leak. Then at the beginning of May the oil light came on, but car had plenty of oil, had had oil change when transmission leak was fixed. There was also a knocking noise in the engine. Took the car to the dealership were I bought and the next day I was told that they couldn't find the problem with the knocking but that the oil sending switch was bad. One week later on the way home from work I heard the knocking noise only louder, it sounded like a diesel engine and the oil light had also come on. Drove car directly to dealership where one of the mechanics murmured something about 2.7 engines being no good. Now the extended warranty won't cover replacement/or work on the motor due to oil sludge in the engine. Both dealership and warranty company are saying that the car was not maintained. That is b***. My husband is a auto mechanic and that car was well taken care of. The car had left the dealership one week prior to the engine failing and they also did an oil change then and they didn't mention anything about the oil looking bad. Daimlerchrysler told me when I called them that It wasn't their problem. So between "can't find the problem" and "It's not our problem" I've got a car that I can't afford to fix and a car payment for the next 3 years and no car to show for it. I've already signed up for a class action suit for early engine failure due to sludge and I hope other people do the same. Maybe together we can all fight Daimlerchrysler before anymore American consumers get taken adventaged of. Similar Products Used: dodge stratus which I've traded in last week. |

Major motor repairs needed after only 50 thousand miles Bought the car new. Ran good until about 2 months ago then started making a knocking noise. Had it to mechanic and dodge dealer service dept. Couldn't find the problem. WOW...took it on vacation, broke down in VA. Towed the car back to PA. Found out the timimg chain went. Dodge tells us they made 2 different engines. One is designed that if the timing chain goes, it bends the valves. Guess what, I bought the one that bends the valves. Been getting the run around with it. State they can't just change timing chain they have to tear engine apart, because it MIGHT have ruined the valves. At the cost of more than $3,000. The car only has 54 thousand miles on it. Also right after waranty was up, both electric window motors went. No help from Dodge. Would never buy another one. Be sure to keep all records of oil changes (12 is not enough) needed 18, although it doesn't matter needless to say waranty is up. Similar Products Used: Oldsmobile Cutlass |

Weakness:
noise sound system responsiveness We love the car in all aspects other than one. Bought with 91,000 miles, never wintered in IA before we bought and now every spring the darn car is unwilling to start for about a 2-week stretch when the hot sun brings temps above 80 degrees. Like all problems, it doesn't happen with mechanic present. Car is great otherwise, lots of space - I'm 6'7 and fit quite comfortably. Easier to do self maintenance on. Is a bit noisy with outside sounds-wind. Similar Products Used: Ford Taurus Chevy Lumina |

not a dependable car. no resale value wow where do I start. I bought the car for my wife and she loves the car. Everything was good untill 3months ago the car wouldnt shift out of 1st gear guess what intrepid fans the transmission module went out. Then a month ago I noticed when you would come to a stop the oil light would blink off and on. I took it to my mechanic and he said at idle there was no oil pressure. Good thing I took it straight in to get it fixed didnt do any major damage just the oil pump had gone bad. Talked to the dealer and they know all about it and said that dodge wont do anything to take care of it. So if you have a 2.7 and you havent had a problem hang on you will. Intrepid
Strength:
Anyway, the car is spacious and stylish which is definitely its strong selling point. Too many new cars look like squashed bug eyes, but the Intrepid definitely sits apart from the norm. Its a solid family sedan, I'm hoping most of the transmission problems are coming from people expecting the car to act like a Camaro.
Weakness:
Possible faulty transmission design. Is it just some lemon transmissions, or jack-rabbit drivers? 23849 Miles at purchase I needed to get my wife a very secure vehicle since she is an expecting, and the Intrepid truly is the only traditional full-size sedan you can get anywhere. Before buying this model, I had investigated into the Intrepid via the net, and was aware that earlier models had transmission problems and then there's that website about the steering bolt breaking without notice. I have dismissed the website about the steering bolt, since there are probably over 1 million+ Intrepid owners, the fact there is only 18 accounts doesn't seem to suggest a pattern. There is always a possibility of faulty parts in any car, so it always advisable not to drive fast around curves or over 75 mph. As for the transmissions, we got a bumper to bumper warranty from GM (yes GM), which lasts until 96,000 miles (or 4 years), so hopefully, if it does go out, it does so before then. I think the fact that auto manufacturers models don't have a CD player standard means they need to get in tune with consumer demand. Sure, many cars like Honda Civic's are driven by teenagers who usually swap the radio the next day, but in a family car like the Intrepid, I don't care if the stereo can abrase my ears, I just want it to play CD's. Make the CD player standard. The side view mirrors could be wider. Full-size spare would be nice. Transmission, cheap interior The transmissions in these cars stink. I have a 2001 with 57,000 miles on it and it just came out of the shop after an $1800 bill. Complete destruction of major trans parts. Some of the gears are in pieces. Not a good car for reliability. This is my second dodge in as many years with trans problems. Weakness:
Cup holders break easily, middle arm section too low, brakes hard to replace without problems w/ noise, little plastic handles starting to break off (lights, lumbar support) but fixable. I literly stole my Dodge from the dealership as it was X-Mas and nothing was moving off the lot. I was extremely lucky seeing as my sedan features every option Dodge made at that time and I have been soooo spoiled by it. I love my wheels and am extremely dissapointed that the new Intrepids are based on a completely different body design or I would purchase another without any question.
