Strength:

- Styling - Size (there''s a real back seat... if you can get to it) - Handling - pretty good. Never really found its limits of adhesion. - Pretty nice cruise control operation. Communicative, functional, trying to make due with that lack of power...

Weakness:

Everything else. - Power: None. 2.5 liter V6 automatic... no torque, confused automatic transmission. - Build quality: none... suspension replaced after 15K miles. Rattles everywhere. Brakes repeatedly warp. - Turn radius: 43 feet. Compare to a Ford Explorer at 34 feet, and to my ''01 Jetta at 32 feet. Or, compare to a Ford Expedition at 42 feet. It''s hell to get it into a parking garage - it just can''t get around the turns, instead having to 3-point turn to avoid the support pillars. - Ride: hard. Yeah, yeah, it''s a sporty car (not sports car, not with that engine), but it''s still hard. - Steering tilt mechanism: doesn''t. With the driver''s seat all the way down and back, and the steering wheel all the way up, the wheel still hits my legs. This is a general issue in the Eclipse of this genre, too.

Wish we hadn''t gotten this car. We debated the base Intrepid at just $1K more, and made the wrong choice. We did get the 5 year 0.9% financing... but even now, two and a half years later, it''s still worth less than we owe on it. It''s dropping in value like no tomorrow - apparently people figured out what a POS it is. Consumer reports says it''s a maintenance hog... they''re right. I say it''s underpowered.

Strength:

Handling, 5 speed shifts smooth and crisp, gas milage, great upper end speed

Weakness:

low end grunt and a tight steering wheel to get my long legs under when I enter/exit the vehicle

I didn''t think I would like the Avenger but for a car that only had 44k on the odometer and priced under 6k I couldn''t pass it up....now that I have owned it a week I wish I would have had one a long time ago. This car looks great, even for a base model and drives like a champ. I have had to get used to the higher rev''s that come with the 2.0 but once I got used to that I love driving this thing!!....I do agree that the Avenger has a lack of bottom end grunt but you have to remeber that this isn''t like other 4 banger Mopars....this engine likes to rev and it rev''s freely....don''t be afraid to pump this thing past 6 grand on the tach....I have already stomped a few imports with a burst of speed and shown them the fancy styling of the rear end of this car! This car is basically a Mitsubishi Eclipse in Mopar disguise!

Good looks. Reliable. Runs and handles great.

Weakness:

The goodyear RSA''s wear out quick. Needs more power. Lousy turning radius.

1997 4cyl. Bought it with 20000 miles currently at 48000. Runs great. No major problems. Had it two years so far. Really have to wind out the four banger. Has no bottom end to speak of. Added a K&N filter and opened up the airbox. Definetley helped in the power department. Needs a little more lumbar support on long highway trips. Brakes could be bigger.

Great Looking Good Stero Rides great on highway Great leg room

Weakness:

The engine light is annoying. The brakes go out pretty fast, and its way to low to the ground, very easy to bottom out!

The 1997 Dodge Avenger is a great first car. It has a great look. Makes heads turn. My 97 avenger has a Quad 4. Looks fast.. but isn''t to the exterme. Has NO power locks and windows. AM/FM casseset radio. Unfortuntley the first day that my parents bought my car, I bottomed it out, and caused $3,000 with in damange. Cops really don''t pay attention, unless you live in a small town. LOL. I loved the Quad 4 engine that I had and I got pulled over 3 times in Jan. for speeding, but never got a ticket. IT seems like the Dodge AVenger is made for smaller people. But overall great car. All it needs is a super charger, and some kickass effects and assor. then you got yourself one hell of a car.

Without Mods....the engine lacks a little off the line

I bought my baby Avenger about 4 months ago. I am only 16 and am working hard to pay for the car and insurance. The car is definetely worth every penny. I own the leather, sunroof, 2.0 litre DOHC, power everything, fully loaded model. The car itself is beautiful. I get compliments on it everyday(often times by older people who are jealous of me). The car definetely hauls ass, with just a cat-back and cold-air intake. I can feel a major difference in power. I agree that the stock models lack power( off the line only!!!!)But with only a few small mods, I am turning heads and beating a whole lot of poeple. I have one of the faster cars in the city that includes a great amount of street racers. The most unbelievable part is that I just pushed over 140,000 miles about a week ago, and the car runs like a peach. It definetely has potential for a good driver. If you think that the car is slow and lacks alot of power, then you aren''t driving it right. I have successfully dragged and beat cars such as the following: Beretta, Civic, CRX, Talons, Eclipse, Sebring, Cavalier, other Avengers, any Monte Carlo, any standard Mustang(excluding the 5.0 models), Taurus SHO, Probes, Neon, MX6,323, 626, Thunderbirds, Contour, any and every SUV....the list just goes on and on. I am not exaggerating, i stand behind my word that these are cars that i have personally beat in 1/4 mile drags. In the hands of a good driver, the car will absolutely destroy any Avenger or Sebring V6 models. I have blown the doors off these cars every time i race them. Which proves that the 4 cylinder does haul more than the V6 models. I have been adding little interior and exterior mods since i got it. I definetely suggest you do the following as i have: 5% all around window tint, racing stickers on the backseat windows, blue reverse bulbs and blue plate bulbs definetely the back-end a cool glow, undercarriage lights, interior bass lights under each front seat definetly lights up the whole floor with a cool glow, bra( hood only, otherwise it makes it look bad), front light covers, blue HID lights for the headlamps and fog lights, wind deflectors for the sunroof and door trimming, and snake-eye wiper nozzles. These are all mods that anyone can afford to add. And they definetely separate the car from any other on the road.

Weakness:

Power

The Avenger is not a performance car. Mine has over 120,000 miles on it and has served me well. I regularly drive 800 miles round trip without thinking I might break down. This car IS fun on the highway, it handles like a dream and is comfortable. This car is definately worth what I paid. Buy this car if you want dependable, comfortable, good-looking transportation at a good price. Dom''t buy this car if you are looking for performance.p

Mechanics

This car is a nice car. I love the look and the attention that you get when your in it. It will take some working on whether it be the brakes or the control arms. But it has been well worth it. Now as far as Michigan weather it''s not the best(because it doesn''t like to stop as soon as you hit the brakes) but it has done alright. The car has a new look that some cars are just getting. So you have a 90''s car with a 2000 look. And it''s pretty rare your not going to see it everywhere you go, and that''s always nice. It rides nice if you take care of it. Altogether its a great car if looks are important to you. Now if your more about the mechanics of the car it might not be the car for you.

Power, Transmission(Same transmission as in a Dodge Caravan.)

When I purchased my Avenger it had 40000 miles on it. I had no problems until 71000. First my brakes had to be replaced. And then my engine light came on. I had it checked out and was shocked to find out I needed a transmission overhaul. Cost me over $2,000.Luckily a freind was able to fix the transmission better than it was brand new! Needless to say I am devoted to customizing this car. Have no plans to sell. Overall, I am satisfied, but can''t wait to have a little more power.

Just about everything else

I just got this car and it is starting to get on my nerves. The check engine light pops on and off for no obvious reasons. The brakes squeel. If it rains, dont even think about putting your window down, you will be soaked. Some genius decided to make it so you have to take off the manifold to change the spark pluges. Greedy bastatrs!!! Windows dont seal right. Weakest v6 I have ever driven. On the other hand the car looks awesome. I put 18 inch chromes on it, and a sterio. It turns heads but, the problems outweigh the graces. I had a talon 2.0 that would dust this car.
