Strength:
Ample engine power, good looks, many features available for a resonable price (some standard items on this car were not even offered on the competition), respectable road manners, good brakes.
Weakness:
Noisy sunroof in cooler weather (see summary), faulty engine cradle (again, see summary), unsatisfactory customer service, multiple dash and window rattles, transmission whine. I bought this vehicle new in may of 2000 thinking I was getting a decent vehicle but after 30000 miles I found I was sadly mistaken. Initial quality was quite good with only a minor rattle in the ceiling behind the sunroof. Not long after 20k miles the steering began poping when the wheels were turned from side to side while parked (would not happen while the car was in motion.) The neccesitated what turned out to be 4 trips to 2 dealerships until the service department discovered the aluminum engine cradle was defective. The cradle was replaced with a new one which was a TEMPORARY FIX ONLY until a permanent fix could be implemented. 7000 miles later the problem resurfaced and, by this time, the service department fixed the weak welds by, I'm not making this up, 64 oz of Loctite and a large dental syringe. This apparently fixed the problem but, during all of this the sunroof began to rattle VERY LOUDLY in cooler weather. After 3 separate trips to the service center and an entirely NEW sunroof, motor assy and trim pieces I was rewarded with...the same problem and a intermittent defective sunroof switch which was finally replaced. Other problems included numerous and intermittent rattles in the dash and rattles in the driver and passenger doors when the windows were down no more than a couple of inches. Just before I traded it in the transmission began to while under normal acceleration. Calls to the Chevy Customer Assistance Center were not fruitful and promises of a meeting with the/ANY regonal/local customer satisfaction rep were unfulfilled. I sadly came to the conclusion that it was time to dump this lemon. On the plus side this car had plenty of power, got excellent gas mileage, had tons of creature features for the cost and was a very good looking car. Too bad Chevy had such sorry engineers designing this car. Hopefully later models have had these problems addressed. I really liked and respected GM and it's products up until I had to deal with the totally unsatisfactory quality of that car and customer service experienced by Chevrolet. Needless to say, this will be the last GM product I ever own. Similar Products Used: Honda Civic, Pontiac Grand Prix, Ford Mustang. |

Strength:
powerful engine...fun to drive. The moonroof helps too. I don't really have any problem with the car yet.
Weakness:
I have problems with the brakes since the first day I got it. I had it fixed once by the dealer and was told by Gateway Chevrolet that it's because they can't use the sqeak free brake pads anymore... whatever... I'll have to fix that. I don't hear the other SS on the road doing that. I love this car. I drove coupes all my 10 years with having a license but Chevy is awesome. This car drives great and I can now pass up all those Fords that used to cut me off in my 200SX. Ha Ha. |

Good power, interior.
Weakness:
Obvious problems with the design of the front suspension. I have had a lot of problems with the suspension. The struts have been replaced twice, Tie rods twice, anti-sway bar, rear rotors at 30k. It has recently started making noises again in the front end....so back to the dealer I go. Heater blower was replaced due to a vibration. Marker lights are filled with water and need to be replaced. Strength:
Torch Red. Turns alot of heads while on the road. Not many like mine around here. Had a vanity plate made for it. Fully loaded and could have saved some bucks on not getting the OnStar or the cassette player, both of which I have never used. Never been in the back seat. Has alittle over 30,000 miles on it and still running great and is always the one chosen to go on a road trip in. Dusted a 97 Mustang GT and a few others. Will go alittle faster than the 140 on the speedometer. Handles well in the snow.
Weakness:
Seat heater went out and had to have that replaced. Grease on the steering linkage dried up and made clicking feel and sound when turning while braking. Other than that, no other problems to report. be nice if it was rear wheel and had a V8. I had a 95 LS that I got used at 45,000 miles. Blew the engine in that because the head gasket went and I spun the bearings. From there it just never ran right anymore. The alternator went and i got tired of it. Decided to upgrade to the 2001 SS. Have had problems with the C/V joints, brakes. Recently problems with SERVICE ENGINE SOON light and spark plugs!!! We love this car. It drives smooth, turns great, and has nice looks. This car originally was bought for my husband who drove it back and forth to work everyday. Now it has become our family car, though two doors are very hard with small kids. It is very reliable and remotely sound prrof from outside noise. Similar Products Used: 99 Nissan Maxima, AWESOME CAR!!!! |

Monte Carlo SS
Strength:
The car has every options you could want including heated leather power seats, On Star, power sun roof, great looks and the best sound system I have heard in a car.
Weakness:
Needs the LS 6, V/8 from the Corvette since GM insists on this being their NASCAR participant it should run as well as it looks. I am also disappointed at the lack of after market performance parts but so far can find no weakness in the car, it has not been back to the dealer since purchase. It does need more power before anyone will take it serious as a performance car and it certainly is one of the best looking cars on the road so it should have the performance to go with the image, come on GM wake up, the Camaro is dead because you made it a one person car. I took my 2000 Z28 in for service and saw a bright red Monte Carlo SS on the lot and was admiring it because it had all every option by grond effects which I did not want. After a test drive I was hooked it had everything you could ask for in a car plus room my Camaro never dreamed about the 2,500 dollar rebate and a strong trade in sold me after the test drive. The best looking car GM makes should have the power to go with the looks and for a new car loaded with every option you would find on a luxary car at twice the price under 26 grand how can it be bad. |

Strength:
The smooth ride...handling is awesome. Stereo system is fantastic and the interior room is more than you would expect from a 2 door coupe.
Weakness:
Performance wise - could use a few more ponies. Interior - cupholders are too shallow... too many "hidden" pockets in the console design I traded a 2001 Chevy Tahoe for my Pace Car limited edition, competition yellow Monte Carlo SS . I had my doubts at first but I love this car! It was a steal at the price and it only had 3000 miles on it - fully loaded! Similar Products Used: 1984 Grand Prix |
