Strength:

Nice gear ratio makes sure that all the ponies go the wheels. Rides like butter at over 100mph in overdrive. Alot of room in the cabin and the trunk. 3.1L is the smaller of the two engines for this year, but the only other cars that can take me are Camaro's and beyond.

Weakness:

Ok. Since it's 40k birthday here's what's happened.( Keep in mind that she's only at 50k now) She's gone through 3 batteries, which are a pain in the butt to replace since it's under washerfluid and 2 bracers. A new alternator. New front tires. New power window and power seat switches. And yesterday I flushed the radiator because it was the most coroded thing I had ever seen. Next in line for repaires is suspention work and a new muffler

When I first bought my Monte I was i love. Black on Black leather is definatley a very atractive combo. I had Little to no problems at first, but once the car broke 40k miles all the electrical parts started going. All in all she's a good car, plenty of power and looks. Very classy.

Strength:

Great classy yet sporty styling. Powerful and strong engine, good quality car! The ride is nice and smooth.

Weakness:

The car has a bad blind spot when looking over the driverside shoulder. The driver side mirror shakes when my bass hits, but I think that is because I think that the car was hit on the driver side before I got it, not that you can tell now by looking. The driver side window rattles when it is half-way down, but I believe again, for the same reason. It is very ard to get into the back seat. The brakes make weird noises and CLAMP to the rotor when backing up at an angle. The car isn't that fast, but I guess thats why they made the Z34.

I LOVE THIS CAR!!! I think the car is plain, yet is still ooks beautiful. I love the styling and I get complimetns on it often. The interior is nice too with the wood trim along the dash and doors. Very reliable with no problems. I would recommend this car to anyone who wants a look of a sporty car and the ride of a luxury sport.

Trunk space and a back seat big enough for 2 kids

Weakness:

driver seat is uncomfortable on long road trips and plastice door panel cracked during the first year and factory stereo broke after 6 months.

Bought car new in 1999. Decent family car. Not much power but it does have a trunk you can put a couple of suitcases in. Gas mileage is aroun 25 mpg. Overall 3.5 out of 5. Car is a lot better with new exhaust, intake system, reprogrammed comp, and nitrous. Est horsepower at 220 with out nitro 295 with nitro. Also handles better with new 18 inch tires and wheels with 2 inch lowering kit.

With engine modifications it ran a 14.3 quarter mile time at 99 mph. It would be close to a Z-28 with a LT1.

Strength:

It's a great looking car, with a sleek appearance and comfortable interior. With the 3.4 V6, it's a slapshot off the line, leaving a lot of bigger cars surprised. The mileage is OK, provided you don't drive around with your foot to the floor. The trunk is pretty roomy, and the back seat folds down for easy access. The sound system w/ CD player is really good. Engine is fairly quiet, but when you stomp on it, it lets out a nice throaty growl. DOHC engine able to spin a lot of RPM's, which helps acceleration greatly.

Weakness:

Transmission very weak, 3.4 V6 will tear it up. Timing belt on 3.4 has to be changed EVERY 50,000 and NO LATER, and it costs about $500-$700 dollars to replace. Plstic dashboard and door panels always rattle. The stupid valance under front bumper will hit most curbs and scratch off the paint. Fuel Injectors are a weak spot, and eventually will have to be replaced, sometimes one at a time, sometimes all at once. I bought the car with 41,000 miles, and it now has just turned 70,000. Since then, it has continually had fuel injector problems (misfiring, no starts, crappy mileage,) but the dealership can't seem to find a problem. The service engine soon light is on more than off. The transmission starting chewing itself to pieces and after 2 repairs it was replaced, and still doesn't work right. Both the oil pan and transmission have leaked, been fixed and still leak randomly from time to time. The cheap plastic console lid broke off, the alternator went out, the hood insulation came off and fell into the fans, the paint flaked off the wiper arms, which rusted and had to be replaced. The car will sometimes just stall in traffic, and every once in a while, when sitting in park, will without warning rev itself up to about 2000 RPM's and then go back to normal. About every 5th or 6th time I start it, it takes about 5-10 seconds of cranking it over to get it started. With 70,000 it is now sometimes reeking of rich exhaust, (too much fuel) and the catylitic converter about stinks me out of the car on hot days. I don't drive the car excessively hard, but I do like to blow someone away off a stoplight every once a while. However, doing this a few time will cause the engine to require a quart of oil. MAINTENANCE IS VERY IMPORTANT!!! Don't go longer than suggested for any service, especially fluids and the timing belt. I waited until 62,000 before having the timing belt replaced, and after the job was done, The mechanic showed me the old belt, and it was about 1/2 of it's original width, and DANGEROUSLY close to breaking, and if it breaks....BIG repair if not new engine. Do some serious thinking before buying this car. It's fast, it's fun, but it's expensive to drive and maintain.

Could have been a great car, if it wasn't for the fact that it sits in the dealership service bay more than it does in my driveway. If you have a warranty, you're safe. Absolutely not for someone who doesn't stay on top of maintenance and investigate every single weird rattle and sound. Don't buy this car for your kid to drive!!!!!

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A WARRANTY IF YOU BUY A Z34, ESPECIALLY IF IT HAS THE 3.4 DOHC V6!!!!!!!!!

The various rental cars I have driven while my monte was in the shop gave me a really good idea about what else was out there. Nothing had the acceleration and handling of the monte, but reliabilty and durabilty would be the things to compare, which couldn't really be done with rental cars.

Strength:

Weakness:

-Noisey 4 cylinder (no optional V6)
-Front end styling looks very "girly" compared to the '95 - '99 models
-Passenger side door doesn't stay open too well
-Brakes (sometimes ABS kicks in when it shouldn't)

I leased this car January 4th, 2000 from Dan Young Chevrolet on the northside of Indianapolis. I paid about $3000 total out of pocket to start with and my payment is about $220/month. I have had nothing but problems with this car. Chevrolet changed the front/rear ends for the model year '00. My first problem started with one of the newly designed headlights. The driver's side headlight was not properly aimed. I took it into the dealership for it's first oil change and asked them to check it. They never checked it so I had to take it back a 2nd time. The second time they said they adjusted it with a computer. When I got to my car, it was very noticeable that they had forced the headlight assembly too far so that the that it would be aimed in the apporpriate spot. I drove it around for a while, but it still was not right. I finally took it back a 3rd time and they told me that the assembly was warped (service tech's obviously weren't real bright). They put in a brand new headlight assembly. To this day, I still don't think it's right. The other problem is with my sunroof. About 5-6 months after I bought my car, the sunroof stopped opening all the way sometimes. I took it to a different dealership than the one where I bought my car because I wasn't happy with their service. They said they would have to replace the entire sunroof, but it was only a 3 hour process. After they had ordered the parts, I dropped my car off at 7:00am one morning. I told them I'd be back at 6:30 that evening to pick it up...They said "ok, it will be ready for ya." When I arrived at 6:15 they were all closed up and my car was sitting in the same spot that I left it. And by the way, they had locked it behind a fence. I found an open door to the building was able to "express my feelings" about the entire situation. Luckily, there was one person left that could get my car out for me. While my car was there all day long, they never even touched it. I then called another dealership (3rd) about it. They told me that it's just a module and not the entire sunroof. I dropped it off and picked it up at the same time as I did the last time. Not only was the dealership still open when I picked up my car, but they had it all fixed by 10:30 that morning. I hate to say, 1 week later my sunroof stopped working once again. So now I will have to take it in for the 3rd time to get the sunroof fixed. In the 7 months that I've had my car, I've had it in the shop 6 times. Right now I am dealing with Customer Assistance at Chevrolet and they are trying to contact the dealership where I purchased my car. I'm trying to get rid of this car now since I've had so many problems. The headlight and sunroof aren't even the only things that are wrong...ABS kicks in sometimes when it shouldn't, there's a knock in the suspension when I make turns, the sunroof is now rattling, and the passenger side door doesn't stay open very well. I wish I could get rid of this junker and get back my '93 Z-24. For anybody that is thinking about leasing/buying this model, I would recommend that you don't. I bought a new car so that I wouldn't have problems, and that's all I've had.

Strength:

Acceleration, sleek timeless appearence, roomy, good on gas, instramentation is big and clear without being cartoonish.

Weakness:

While the 3.1 does provide great acceleration, great is not a word that should be tagged to this car. This car is a representitive of the Chevy name. It's always been an icon like the Camaro or Vette. While it out performs the V8's of the 80's I expected MORE by the year 98. As far as problems it has some interior noise, and quick weardown on the front tires.

I bought it used for 15k, and after driving it a while I would recommend it to anyone not looking for HIGH performance. It's a great car, but don't expect Tazmanian Devil (or whatever they're using to sell it now) power. It's not a NASCAR, but then again what is. As for the Z-34, for the price it doesn't seem like all that much of an improvement.

What a great car!
Handled awesome in all road conditions. The trunk was huge and the back seats folded down for even more room. The leather seats where a nice luxury, and the sun roof was huge. It was a great car to just go for a drive and enjoy a clear road. It was sporty but with a nice bit of class. It had great pick up when it was needed, and the cruise control helped to keep it within the speed limits. The tinted windows helped keep it kewl in the summer time. It was very dependable, and never gave me the slightest bit of a problem. I hated to trade it in, and only did so because I needed more cargo space.

Weakness:

I found was it had a bad blind spot on the left rear side. The back seats where a little difficult to get in and out of because of the front seat belts. But these were out shadowed by how great everything else was.

If you don't have to transport any kids and enjoy driving a big car with a bit of a kick in it. It's for you.
