Strength:

Very stylish car and rides quite well.

Weakness:

Front Brakes and turn rotors cost 244.00 at the dealer, a bit steep when it's a design problem.

The Malibu has several common problems by most owners. Turn signal-Flasher problems. Anti theft light. Brake repairs every 20,000 miles. Engine noise.

Strength:

Love the sporty look and V-6 engine. Great color (metallic green). Roomy and I feel safe when driving this car.

Weakness:

Don't like the automatic head lights, but I can deal with it.

I have to admit that I really love my Malibu. I've only had it a short while but have had absolutely no problems at all. I bought this car used with 60,000 miles on it and so far so good. I'd recommend it to anyone interested and would also recommend the dealer from whom I purchased it. They were great.

Strength:

It is a pretty car and I like the space it has for a mid size car. It is a nice handling car. The smalller engine is perfect for the people who don't like a whole lot of speed. Great for teens.

Weakness:

The brakes, water pump in the hotter climants, and Steering pump hoses.

I bought the car at 45000 miles. At 55000 miles 9 months later the transmission melted, $3000 repair. at 56000 miles the steering pump hose had hole it it from the exhaust hose coming from the engine. The car will not turn with no fluid, locks up. At 58000 miles the water pump went out($900 repair), which was a common item to go out in AZ for the Malibu. The water pump has a lifetime warranty because it will need to be replaced again. I have replaced the brakes twice in the past 18 months and am going to have to replace them again. The brakes make sounds all the time (Its the nature of the brakes the dealer says). The air conditioning turns on and off at an idle. I like my car but it has trouble that I don't think the manufacturer really wants to acknowledge.

Good power, nice controls, AM/FM CD and Cassette. Pull down seats into trunk.

Weakness:

Brakes, poor MPG

I thought this would be a great car to replace a POS Ford Taurus of my wife's. I was not pleased with this car as in the first 36000 miles I had to replace brakes &/or Rotors 3 times. I finally traded it in about 200 miles before the warranty ran out. Also, the car got poor gas mileage. I was only able to get about 24-26 MPG whereas in my 96 Lumina with well over 100K miles I get 34-37mpg. I hope the '04 redesign of the car addresses some of the issues, otherwise this car is a black mark on GM.

Had to take the car into the dealer after slowing down on the highway. Couldn't find the problem the first time. However, on the second try, with extensive testing, they found a problem with the wiring in the fuel pump. It was replaced, and everything seems to be working ok. The service engine light never came on and the dealer told us they coundn't check without it. However, we persisted. Hope nothing goes wrong now.

It's almost paid for.

Weakness:

Lost my ass in this car. (see strengths) Poor braking system design causes the front brakes to wear out in 25000 miles. Not a very reliable car at all! DON'T BUY THIS CAR! (unless you want mine!)

I would stay as far away from this car as you possibly can! Has 49,000 miles on it, and it's already on it's second set of brakes. Had to replace the intake manifold gasket this week along with the altenator and battery. No way a car with 49K on it should need this kind of work done to it. They claim 100,000 miles before the first tune up. Guess that's when you need a new engine block! All I have to say is thank God I bought the extended warranty! This POS is gone the second that warranty runs out!

Weakness:

I really wish that Chevy would recall the brakes so I wouldn't have to always have my car in the shop replacing pads and rotors. Stalling is very bad and can be quite dangerous.

I have a 1998 Chevy Malibu that I purchased used in February 1999 at around 20,000 miles. I'm at 85,000 and I would say that I have really mixed feelings regarding the quality of the car. I, along with many out there, have had to have brakes and rotors replaced each year. My AM stereo has never worked (which a-okay with me). My FM stereo reception is poor. My engine light is posessed and turns off and on when it feels like it. When I first purchased the car, it would stall. I could be at a stop sign, and it would just turn off. I could put it in park and it would start back up, but that got to be nerve racking. It stopped doing it for a while, but now it has started up again. The car also shakes when I'm at a stop. The air conditioner turns off and on when it pleases -- usually when I'm in town. If I'm on a trip, it stays on more. I've got about 85,000 miles on it now and have taken it to Colorado, Utah, Arizona and Nevada and has been great. Just today, I noticed that when I put it in Drive, the whole car jumps and when I'm accelerating, it jumps again when it's shifting (automatic). My car was just paid off last month and I have no plans to buy a new car. However, if I can't get the transmission working right...I may have to. All of the maintenance required for the car is performed regularly, so I am disappointed that Chevy hasn't fixed the brake issue (which to me is the most important). I realize that there is maintenance on a car, but find some of the issues to be excessive.

Weakness:

Brakes, V6 is not powerful, weak AC/Heater.

I have had My Malibu since 98, and have put on it 100,000 km. The brakes are a definite problem. I had to replace the heating/AC fan twice. The AC is not very powerful. GM has chosen the wrong tires for the car. Besides that the car is very good. It starts every day without any problem(Montreal winters are very very cold), The engine/Transmission are very well adapted(V6), The car is confortable on highways(I have done many long trips). I had no other problems. I beleive that I got a very good value for my Money,
