Not very reliable. I purchased my 1998 Chevy Malibu brand new and have had to make the following repairs: brakes, pad and rotors (the brakes felt like they were grinding immediately after being replace) replaced the alternator, replaced the starter, had the blower motor replaced, My ABS light comes on (it seems to reset when I turn the car off and back on again) the seat belt clip on the driver side broke, the light that comes on were the gear shift is is burned out AAA autoclub practically knows me on a first name basis. (I may be stretching this comment a little) :) Similar Products Used: Toyota Corolla |

Electrical Brakes GM customer services OK, so we bought our Malibu in dec. 1996 and took it with us to Finland. We have had nothing but problems since we bought it. Before we left USA, we went numerous times to the dealership with problems like hesitating idlespeed and lower controlarm changes. At the time the car has only 56K miles on it. We have had 3 lower control arms changed, blowermotor resistor, front brakes. The worst thing is that it is unreliable. Anti-theft goes on every now and then and all the other warninglights goes on and off like discolights. The knocking "diesel" sound is also very annoying. But there is also something good. Here in Finland with the right snowtires on it handles excellently. Even in below 30 degrees Celcius it starts well unless of course the anti-theft controll kicks in. Right now be are about to change the right hub and bearing assy. By the way it costs in Finland 602euro = 610$. Oh boy we are so happy!!! To compare, we have also a 1989 Saab 900i 150000km with NO problems. Makes me think, do we want another GM made lemon. Styling - Truly Sad
Weakness:
Too many to list I bought my car used at 33k as opposed to a brand new Taurus because my sisters '98 Malibu just runs great she never has any problems, I paid a lil extra (15k for car 8K for interest...I know I know) for my Malibu because of poor credit & I also wanted 100% reliable transportation to and from work (round trip 55 highway), 1 year I have replaced the battery (no warning lights, nothing, just shut off on an onramp), rotors and breaks (which sound worst now brand new; they were also recalled, the dealer told me that they weren’t responsible for replacing them...never found out who was responsible), water pump, Serpentine belt replaced 3 times (should've been 4), loss of power, electrical problems with power mirrors, radio, tail light and a leak in the roof leaving massive amounts of water in the passenger side foot rest which would overflow to the rear passenger foot rest. I gotta admit they did fix the leak after 9 months and repeated phone calls in which I was basically called a liar. They also fixed my lack of power and acceleration about 3 weeks ago which was great for about 2 weeks, now I'm back to no power or acceleration. That brings me to the Serpentine belt - Squeaks something awful...I was told by the dealer that this was normal and expect this when the belt gets wet (WHAT???)...The only reason I continue replacing the belt is because I don't know what damage is being done by leaving it in that condition, I'd be the perfect anti-Malibu ad; my cousin has the exact same car with all the same issues (except serpentine belt problem). I am a diligent car owner, I have my car serviced every 3k miles and routinely checked since I need my car to work. So like most other people who find themselves in my situation you figure cut your loss and find a truly reliable car; every dealer (including the one I bought the car from 1 year before at 15k) has blue booked my car at $4,500 - maybe $5,000, so I'll end up rolling 6k - 7k into my next car, so my next car at 23k will cost me 30k if I'm lucky enough to get 0% financing. I'll be in an Envoy or Trailblazer come the end of Sept...Good ridden to bad rubbish. This is what is truly sad about my situation, I really like my car an all I ever wanted was for my car to be fixed and run reliable for me...seems American car manufactures haven't learned. Similar Products Used: I also had a 91 Corsica & a 95 Corsica...I bought a 87 dodge Caravan after the 91 Corsica which ran better and stronger than all Chevy cars I've owned, I still wish I had that mini-van. Good gas mileage. Fairly good ride.
Weakness:
Poor air circulation. Poor pickup. Uncomfortable seats. Bought this car with 24,000km on it. Found the pickup was poor compared to the 4 cylinder cars we'd had previously. The car now has 40,000km and on a recent trip on the interstate in N.Y. the car slowed right down. We were able to pull of the road safely, although it was very scary. After a few minutes the car started again. This happened twice. We were able to get to a Canadian Tire Service Centre who were wonderful. They diagnosed a problem with a computer part module #1, which controls the gas mixture. The mechanic said the car was running too lean. He told us what to get replaced and what it should cost. Well, my husband is now at a Chev dealer in Newmarket, who says that they can't test without the service engine light coming on. Funny, the Canadian Tire man didn't have any trouble!!! So he's waiting to see what the dealer comes up with. I think this has been the problem all along with the terrible pickup. Also the air blowers have never worked on #1 or 2. If we want air we have to turn the knob to #3. The steering seems to be too sensitive. Somewhat nerve racking. No other problems. Wish we'd bought the Chrysler Sebring Similar Products Used: 98 Dodge Stratus - good car 91 Plymouth " - " " Buick LeSabre - great car |

It is good looking, and pretty good size for a car.

Problems, Problems, Problems!!!!!! I bought my Malibu because I am a middle-low class working mother that wanted something that was a pretty good size, reliable, and still good looking. I picked the wrong car. I thought I got a pretty good deal on it, but within months I had spent hundreds of dollars on repairs. I have had nothing but trouble out of it. I went to trade it in and the resale value of it had gone down so much that I owed thousands of dollars more than I could get for it. I have a best friend that had the same exact car and the same exact problems. I sincerely suggest that you do not purchase a chevy malibu. It will bite you in the butt!! chessey driver side cup holder. This car is an awesome design with power. I have read a few people summaries saying that the Malinu is a bad car, well i have 134k miles or 210k kilometers with out one problem. Now my Malibu is one of he only ones that was built in Mexico between 1997-98 afterwards the plant moved to the USA. I guess it are supplier on parts or workers but i love this well built car which I plan to have some more years till that 04 Malibu comes out. Electrical;electrical;electrical;gas gauge;brakes;seatbelt;radio&clock Bought the car used with 25000 miles; had heard that the first year model, 97 Malibu had electrical problems so thought that would be fixed by 99. WRONG! Radio changes stations whenever it wants along with the clock just starts running through the numbers randomly and won't stop unless the car is off; my key won't always turn in the ignition no matter whether I step on the brake or not; the driver side seat adjuster broke as well as the seatbelt clip; dealer wants $250 to fix that (HA!) and just as soon as I took if off the lot, all the buttons for adjusting the radio and tuner wouldn't stay pushed in anymore; what's up with that? And the fuel gauge refuses to work. Only time I know how much gas is in my car is when I fill it up. Had to replace the brakes twice in two years and they still feel like they're grinding (and I didn't go to the dealer and get theirs put on). Just goes to show to wait more than a couple of years after a new model is introduced to the mainstream before buying it; get all the bugs worked out first. I bought a chevy because I heard chevy was going to be as good as a honda in 3-5 yrs. So I figured they had to start somewhere. I have 35000 mis. on my car and have had the rotors replaced once and three sets of brake pads so far. I am now being told I can expect to replace rotors every 30000 mis. due to design flaw. I basically like the car but this is not a way to excel. My dealership ripped me off and I guess this is just the beginning. I hope chevy is reading this. |
