Strength:

Passenger space, fit and finish (as a former Neon owner, maybe my standards are lower?)

Weakness:

Engine makes more noise than power. Bland styling.

Seems like everyone else has an axe to grind, but during my shopping and so far, this car is everything I thought it would be. My mileage has been reasonable, I find the car solid and well put together, and with the last round of GM incentives (2004's are due out soon) I got WAY more car for my money than any competing brand

Good size comfort.

Weakness:

Maintenance with many know documented faults

This 2001 Malibu has had the pistons replaced. I brought it back the first week I owned it for what they called slapping piston noise. Oh they all do that, I was told. 23000 Miles now and the brakes are ready to get fixed again. I have never had to pay for any repairs up to this point but when will they start to slove the problem. I was told if you wanted the brakes fixed take it to MIDAS. The dealer told me this, they said GM wont give them any good rotors only the junk that came with the car. The flasher in the dash was replaced no big deal they all do this. I also had a 2000 Cavalier the brades have been dont three times. The 2000 Pontiac Grandam the brakes made it 7500. GM please why did you install program failure. Now you are reaping the benefits. Will never by another Malibu or GM car ever again and I tell everyone that will listen this story.

Strength:

Power, engine feels good, looks. Quantril Service department (GM's built something to keep you guys busy for years to come!).

Weakness:

Excessive torque steer, brakes, myriad of quality issues. GM Head offce customer service...one word..ignorant ..sorry two....rude.

So! It's not just me that's having problems with these things! Actually it has settled down a little ...at 80 000kms now...it's on it's 4th set of brakes, signal flashers intermittantly don't work, fuel guage, blower fan, occasionally won't start, wiper fluid lines freeze readily no matter the wiper antifreeze used, wipers do not clear well..etc..the driver side cupholder is in a very awkward position (on the left side... don't leave it open else you'll hit your knee on the way in or out) Concept of the car is good (nice size, roominess, power etc.) but quality is lacking. Would make a good family car...if someone in the family is a mechanic.

Strength:

Cost for features - ABS, remote keyless entry, power windows/locks/mirrors, split folding rearing seat, etc.

Weakness:

Front brakes and blower motor resistor replaced at 30km. Excessive cranking at start-up. Gas tank is too small.

Not a bad car for the price. Appearance, features and handling make this a good car for the dollar but it lacks the quality needed to elevate GM's status against the imports. I owned a 92 Accord and it seems like the same car a decade later, but less solid.

Good Looking Car, Sporty but practical.

Weakness:

Firestone Tires are heavily worn at 34000 miles.

I have had my 2001 Malibu LS for about a month now and have had no significant complaints. My only concern is a mild rattle when going over speed bumps. The sound is coming from the left front tire. Im not sure what is it but plan to have dealer check it before the warranty runs out in 2000 miles.

EVERYTHING

The malibu is the worst car ever. The coolant is leaking like a faucet. The paint is chipping off and it shakes like crazy when you drive more than 60 mph. We just had the wheels aligned and that did not help. We have had to replace the starter and transmission cable. Have to turn the fan up to 4 to get any air to blow. I will never by a GM vehicle again.

Everything

I've had this car 30 months from new. Within this time there has only been 5 months that this car has not been in the shop for problems; sometimes more than once a month. That isn't including the servicing. I had to fight with the dealer to get most of the major problems rectified, as GM wouldn't do anything despite numerous calls. The paint was coming off the car under 3000kms, they said it was road conditions(no gravel roads). Since car has had to be painted 2, clear coat 1, and front hood today for rust. At less than 4 months the engine was mistaken for a diesel(mechanic thought was a diesel at a gas station) pistons replaced. Calipers, rotors, pads have all been replaced 3 times. Our other car we don't even look at the brakes for at least 40000. Trunck came down on my head (torsion bar broke). Both front hubs had to be replaced, strut mount as well. Drivers side seat belt locks, can't find problem. Wiper washer hoses clog. Rear windows roll down on their own. Fan motor won't work on 2. Gas cap strap popped off. Noises galore. I can't remember anymore off the top of my head, without looking at all the service records. Guy at service desk said of all the people that had had problems with their Malibu, I had by far had the most. There is only 60400 kms on this car. Thank God I bought the extended warrenty. The owner of the dearlership said if I wanted to buy at the end of the lease he would give me an exteded two year warrenty or if I wanted to buy new he would give me a 1000 off a new vehicle. I asked him if I should wipe the spit off my face now or wait until I got rid of the car, because he would give more than a 1000 to someone off the street. SO MUCH FOR CUSTOMER SERVICE.Trying to take legal route to get GM to compensate for aggrivation and inconvience. Yeah right. As soon as I can car will be replaced. Oh when I first got the car I loved it now I can't get rid of it quick enough!

Strength:

Nice exterior.

Weakness:

This car sucks all the way around. Chevy knows this they know these problems exist and have done nothing to correct them...and I don't see how they can get away with it!!! I have lost over $10,000 with this car...and am checking into legal action....yeah right!!!!!

I bought my Malibu with 3000 miles on it. Now I know why someone got rid of it with such low mileage! At 15,000 miles the transmission went out, at almost 30,000 the fuel pump went out, sometime in between the WAY expensive motor on a rear window went out. I have put 3 water pumps on it,and a new thermostat and it is still leaking coolant, but before ALL this the check engine light would come on and go off, unexplained of course. And the interior is literally falling apart in my hands! Also had the brake problems and have replaced belts before their time! I suggest to anyone that owns the same piece of garbage sell ASAP because once they get above 50,000 you can't keep parts on them... and the parts are WAY expensive!

Looks good for a four door.

Weakness:

Car has a lot of problems,I was told the old Malibu's were good (1970's).They made a bad name for the Malibu by making them in 1997 and so on.

I have owned a lot of GMs, this Malibu will be my last.I had it for 15 months now and have had a lot of problems. Intake gaskets gone,AC leaking, two or three bad wires,ABS light on,part was $1300.00.Now have noise in motor (ticking),and loss of power.Fan speeds 1&2 went, brake light on,e-brake switch, every time you stop & go again it would beep.

Model Reviewed: Chevrolet Malibu V-6

Strength:

Size, Styling, Room, Reliability, Powerful Headlights, Daytime Running Lights, Standard ABS

Weakness:

V-6 is weak at 155hp (not 150 like this says), Gas mileage could be better, Handling lacks sharpness, I had to replace things like brake pads, water pump, belts, etc. earlier than I should have, and it has those annoying automatic headlights that most GM vehicles have. I like to turn my headlights on when I want. It doesn't have an off switch for them either.

Well at 105,000 it has been good. I have had to replace things on the car, but it has been good overall. The only major thing to happen wasn't the car's fault. The transmission was screwed up by a mechanic and had to be replaced (their fault, their money). I would recommend it, but there are better cars out there.
