Strength:
Roomy, nice ride. Good on gas for a V6.
Weakness:
Engine, Electrical, Speakers, Paint (chipping) No luck. I noticed a knock soon after purchasing (approx.35000km). Dealership said that they had an internal bullitin saying it was a 'Customer Annoyance due to the new Polymer Coating they were using on the pistons'. I contacted my old mechanic and they advised me that GM was having issues with there 3.1L engines and to call GM Canada and raise a stink. I did, and they re-opened my case, the dealership had it for a week (I got a free rental) and took the engine out. They ended up replacing the pistons as the were 'undersized' or 'not to size' and found a bunch more issues that they had to fix. I was 500 km away from running out of extended warrenty when I got it back. I am know having severe electrical problems, my blinkers and hazards will randomly decide not to work and nobody can find out why. My brakes started acting up (rubbing) and when we looked at them found that they were completly worn, passenger side was metal on my rotor. I had absolutley no warning, no scratch pads and they are wearing extremely uneven. In general I am very unhappy. I now have a car I don't trust 100%, I don't want to sell it to anybody because of the problems and even if I did I probably wouldn't just break even, if I did at all. And I have no faith whatsoever in the dealerships in general. Similar Products Used: 1989 Oldsmobile Cutlass Cierra (much more reliable). 1989 Cavalier, I should've kept it, even with the rust. |

engine, fuel system, a/c, etc. etc. etc. I just wanted to share my anguish. I bought the car with only 5000 miles on it. The visors would repeatedly fall off and hit me in the head while driving. That I can live with, but I had to have the brakes, pad and rotars, replaced twice in less than a year. It's been 8 months since then, so it is probably time to replace them again. My ABS light comes on, the car seems to leak coolant and it runs out of power steering fluid frequently. A/C has problems, had the blower motor replaced, but it is on the verge of quitting completely. Also had to replace the oxygen sensor and map sensor. Now the fuel pump is shorting out and must be replaced. Granted, the car has 95k miles on it now, but there is a different problem each month. When comparing car prices, add about 2k to the malibu for the extensive repairs you will undoubtedly have to undertake. When I last had the car serviced, I was told it probably has one good year left. That would make it 6 years old. Similar Products Used: Is there a similar product? |

CHEV MALIBU
Strength:
Great visablity (wife's short). Very good gas mileage and comfortable to drive long distances. Super carrying capacity with knock-down seats
Weakness:
Brakes, fuel sensors, engine We've had the car 2 1/2 years. Replaced front brakes and rotors at 30K, fuel guage works intermittently, engine knock (piston slap) became noticeable at 5K on start up and has become progressively worse. Now at start-up (35K) car sounds like a diesel and the noise is there all the time. Been to dealers several times. They say noise is "within standards". GM won't fix. They say noise won't affect future trade in but won't put it in writing, say to "trust them". Expect this would have negative affect on trade in at another manufacturers lot. Chevrolet Malibu LS
Strength:
It has every option available. Drives smooth. Large Trunk and pretty roomy for a small car.
Weakness:
Brake pads, plastic pieces inside the car, THEFT SYSTEM, and ABS light. I thought I was the only one having so many problems with my Malibu until doing a search for "faulty theft systems on a Chevrolet Malibu" and seen I wasn't the only Unhappy Malibu owner. In May I replaced the brake pads, they are already half worn and it's only July! The Theft system goes off and I can't start my car for about 15 minutes and then I am late for work. The plastic piece on my seatbelt buckle is broken. The handle to adjust the passenger seat is broken. THe ABS light will come on once in a while, the glove compartment is loose and squeaks a bit. The Hub Bearing is bad and I fear I will experience the more expensive problems I have read about. Similar Products Used: 1989 Olds 98 Regency with 230,000 miles that I trust more! |

I DON'T THINK THAT THIS CAR IS VERY RELIABLE. I BELIEVE THAT THE MALIBU IS A LEMON. NOT A VERY STRONG CAR. MOST PEOPLE I TALK TO COMPLAIN ABOUT THE CAR. I HAT THE CAR. I HAVE HAD PROBLEMS FROM DAY ONE. THE ANTI FREEZE DUMPED 3 TIMES. THE CAR WOULDN'T START. THE RADIATOR HAD TO BE CHANGED. THE FRONT BRAKES AND ROTORS HAD TO BE REPLACED. I ONLY HAVE 19650 MILES ON THE CAR. THE MECH. SAID THE BREAK BOOSTER IS GOING BAD. I HAVE BEEN TO THE DEALER TOO MANY TIMES TO SAY I HAD A NEW CAR.THE SEAT BELT PLASTIC PARTS ARE BROKEN.THE CAR SEEMS TO DRAG ON THE HIGH WAY AND JUMP A LITTLE. I'M JUST NOT SATISFIED. IF I HAD MONEY I WOULD TRADE THIS CAR IN. I HATE IT.THE PAINT JOB LOUSY,JUST PLAIN CHEAP. Similar Products Used: A BROKEN BIKE |

Comfortable, spacious interior, Excellent price for value, Good power.
Weakness:
None!!! I bought the car not knowing all the crap people write bad about it, and after driving it for 18 month's other writers have really bad luck or they write just crap. I have had no problems with the car that needed to get repaired. The only thing is when I start it and drive off too fast the ABS light comes on, but after 30000 I'm pretty sure it's just the sensor and no problem. The brakes are fine (haven't changed yet), engine runs nice (oil change every 4,000), and upgraded the system (I put some 10's in the trunk for some thump) factory speakers are fine. Brakes, rotors, fuel pumps, theft system, radio, locks, doors, windows, etc...the whole car. I purchased this car in June of 2001 and have had problems ever since. I have replace the brakes 4 times and the rotors twice. I don't care what anyone says this has nothing to do with the way I drive I have owned several cars and have never had a problem. I am now in the process of replacing a fuel pump that is supposed to last 100,000 miles or at least 5 yrs. I still have over 60,000 miles to go or 3 yrs. What is amazing to me is when I take my car to the mechanics they are not at all surprised They say this is typical of this type of car. I believe I will try another alternative, going through the better business bureau. If I have no success then I will return the car and take the loss on my credit. I do not have the money or the time to keep reparing a car that is supposed to be reliable. Similar Products Used: absolutely none..This is my first chevy. |

Weakness:
BRAKES, Dealers Other than brakes, brakes and more brakes, the car is okay. Good features for the price and plenty of power and room, but what a pile of crap when it comes to brakes. I don't want to hear a thing from people saying it is the way I drive or maintain the car. I am a perfectionist when it comes to this, but these brakes are terrible. After 6 trips to the dealer and 45000 miles, finally, through the Better Business Bureau, Chevy bought the car back under the lemon law. It was not only the fact that the brakes were bad, but the way their 'customer service' handled the problem is what really stinks. They tried everyway they could to blame me for it, but in the end the BBB saw through it and ruled in my favor. I am a red-blooded American, but next time I will definately think twice before spending my hard-earned money on a car that the manufacturer will not stand behind. Be warned, it thinking about a 97-00 Malibu, be prepared to go to a brake shop and get a good, quality set of rotors and pads put on it as soon as you buy it. If not, you will be at the dealer, giving them $150 every 6000-8000 miles. Other than this, it's a lot of bang for the buck. Similar Products Used: Olds Cutlass |
