Strength:

Smooth engine. Pick-up is adequate. Good highway cruiser.

Weakness:

Head gasket. Steering. Brakes.

Was very good for the first 130,000Kms. Had head gasket replaced at 130,000Kms. Vehicle now has 157,000kms and has developed a coolant leak and I was smelling a burning odor prior to this. Transmission seems to be dieing a slow death. Runs to hot in summer, doesn't heat up enough in winter. Doors freeze often in winter (have to keep door seals well lubed). Signal stalk is now broken. It is in shop now for front end work, more minor problems but I won't list them. Good car if you lease for 3 years.

Strength:

Smooth ride, good power, good handling.

Weakness:

manifold gaskets, o rings tend to leak oil, altenators are weak, brakes do not last

Overall, the car is all right. The 3.1 and 3.4 have a very bad problem with the intake manifold gaskets. They tend to leak antifreeze at 100,000 miles. Replacing the manifold gasket costs between $600 - $700 dollars each time it needs replaced. Chevy knows about the problem but will do nothing to help. One dealership said they fix 3 cars a week with manifold gaset problems.

Strength:

Enough power with the 3.1, will run 85 all day long if you want it to (speed limiter is 100 by the way) and I typically get anywhere from 24-26 miles per gallon in the summer (I drive about 90% highway) and my high was 28mpg. I'm getting about 22 right now but I let it run a while every morning because it's so cold. I'm really not that easy on the throttle. It will get 30mpg on the interstate at 70mph. Also, interior is HUGE. You could practically get lost in the thing. Trunk is so big you'd think the mafia used these cars.

Weakness:

Since mine's a floor shift, there are no cupholders. Dang it! Pain in the butt since I eat on the road so much. Also, I'm currently on my 5th alternator. Don't rightly know why they like to go out, but it's pretty frequent (2 have gone in the past year and a half). Rear brakes are IMO a bad design (floating calliper, and they don't like to stay in working order all that well)

Awesome car. I'm a college student. My parents have owned this car since '92. They bought it with 8000 on the clock. I've been driving it for the last 40k or so, and right now it's got 185,500 miles and still running strong. The car is dang near bulletproof. I've put it through heck and a half on a daily basis (I work construction...I've had the thing in and out of ditches multiple times...I have to park offroad a lot out in the country). The ol' Lumina responds everytime by doing better than I could possibly expect a car of its age / mileage / size to do. It's got a good amount of ground clearance, handles well, has great visibility, good power, gets great mileage (especially for a car this big), and feels like it could pull a trailer if you wanted it to. I've compared it to my sister's '94 Accord EX many times and it blows the Honda out of the water in every category. This thing simply WILL NOT DIE.

Strength:

Rides smooth, handles well, roomy interior and trunk,16" tires and alloy rims, good power, tracks solid and hugs the curves (keep the GA's,expensive but excellent tires), LS a good upgrade, good climate control, good delco cd/stereo (do not code in the anti theft system, 40 bucks to unlock). Six way power seat, sweet, keyless, auto dimmer interior lights.

Weakness:

The brakes, dusty on front rims. Front pads wear out at about 50,000 miles.

I bought this car new in 96', it now has 78,000 miles. I have had the front brakes and rotors replaced, this was due to improper torquing of the wheel bolts, factory tires last 40,000 miles and I just fixed it's biggest problem yet, the vacuum hose that goes to the power brake booster just fell off, it did not seem to have a clamp there, I reinstalled it, put a good clamp on it (don't use those clamps you get at the auto parts store) and it runs fine again. Still has the original battery. Overall, this has been a good solid, reliable car. Better car than the Ford Taurus.

reliability, strength, stereo is pretty good, good first car because everyone-and i dont care who u are always gets into a couple of accidents their first few months of driving-never ever questioned my decision to buy this car.

Weakness:

have to keep up with the repairs on the car or else eventually u'll be stranded-has yet to happen but u never know

well this was my first car my pops said that since i was a new driver i had to get something reliable, strong, and big. as soon as i saw a lumina in the classifieds i called up the lady and bought the car. it had roughly 85k miles on it-the alternator was replaced, the tires were somewhat worn but still in decent condition-the antifreeze definitely had to be changed. overall spectacular car-got into an accident yesterday backed right into a lexus truck which got a dent and my car got zero damage-not the first time it happend-parallel parking i hit a wooden pole and zero damage. strong as a tank. reliable too hasnt let me down yet-which is saying something considering it's american.

Strength:

Nice ride, good visibility

Weakness:

Engine-3.1 or the new 3.4: There is a serious issue with in-take gaskets. Mine was replaced by Chev. Dealer at 110,000 miles and is leaking again now-162,000.$500.00 to 600.00 to repair each time. Chevrolet will not help you on this repair regarding cost. Dont buy a new 3.4 either..same head with same problem-buy the 3.8 engine.

Value priced..when new..but serious engine flaw that GM does not care about..
