Chevrolet Geo Storm Midsize | Compact

Chevrolet Geo Storm Midsize | Compact

DESCRIPTION

The Geo Storm was a sport compact car manufactured by Isuzu and sold in the United States by General Motors from 1990 through 1993 as part of GM's Geo line of inexpensive automobiles. The Geo Storm was a rebadged version of the sporty Isuzu Impulse minus some of that car's more expensive features. Slow sales of the Isuzu version doomed the Storm as when the Isuzu Impulse was canceled, the Geo Storm derivative had nothing to be built from, meaning both cars were discontinued in 1993.

Strength:

I really love the sporty look of the Storm. It takes curves very fast and drives overall very well.

Weakness:

U can't put anybody over 4 ft tall in the backseat comfortably. It really hurts when you hit your head on the back window. I have made three repairs on it since I got it. The headgasket, brakes, and muffler. Once you hit about 80,000 the headgasket typically goes on it. Also, if you live up north like me, plan on spending a lot of time in the ditch durning winter.

Overall, I've gotten a lot out of my car for what I paid I think. Its great in the summer time just to cruise around in.

Well, personally I think it looks like a Camero. I've been laughed at for saying that though.

Model Reviewed: Geo Storm base

Strength:

Tough, fun, makes cool engine noises, great gas mileage @ 30 mpg average, easy to work on, 1999 style in 1990, plenty of room for a 6 foot tall driver

Weakness:

Base model is underpowered, reliability of some parts questionable, cheap interior parts, comical back seat, tiny trunk area

I would recommend the Geo Storm to anyone seeking an inexpensive, fun, sporty car. I used to deliver pizza in mine, putting on 3000 miles a month. It held up great. As long as regular maintanence is kept up, the car keeps going forever. The car is tough as nails, too. I went off road at 45 mph in rutted grass once in an emergency manuever, and it didn't damage the suspension, steering, or even the alignment! The engine held up great until 170,000 miles, when a rod bearing broke. Aside from that, the car is amazing. The timing belt broke at 110,000 miles, without any damage to the engine. If the car is taken care of, and regular oil changes are performed, it will hold up even better than mine.
I still have it and plan to repair the engine myself, which with the size of the engine bay, is going to be easy compared with the tight bays of newer cars. Parts can be expensive, and these cars eat up CV joints all the time. There are also spots on the car that always develop rust, but this may have been corrected on later Storms. Overall - great car for the money.
The person who should buy this car should want a sporty car without the expense of a higher end model. It looks good, sounds good, and is reliable. I would not recommend it to especially tall people and people who need to transport a lot of cargo or passengers.

Model Reviewed: Geo Storm 2+2

Strength:

Unique and eye-catching! Sporty without the price/insurance cost of a sports car; great on gas mileage (at least 35/32); great body design and color choices; stands up to being driven roughly; nice, simple interior; inexpensive OEM parts; accelerates quickly; great handling, perfect for squeezing into tight spaces and narrow streets, low to the ground, driver's side airbag.

Weakness:

Poor stock air intake, but that's fixable; bucket seats--also fixable. Stock muffler rusts fast, again fixable.

I'd highly recommend it to anyone who wants a TRULY unique car without the cost of overpriced show tin. The Storm comes in an array of modern colors and a few of the ones came out of the factory with some original decals. The GSi model is the even sportier looking Storm, equipped with white fog lights and spoiler and more HP. The Storm Wagon is great if you want the room of a stationwagon without the bulk of one. The 1990-91 models have great headlamp flips, while the 1992-93 models have headlamps similar to a Camaro, giving it a "baby Z28" look.
The interior is not as comfortable as a Probe--there's less room from driver to steering wheel even at the farthest point you could put the seat back. But it is comfortable on the long road trips I take often. It's incredibly durable for being such a small car. I've had no problems other than a dead battery and a rusted out muffler. No leakage, no CV joint damage, timing belt still good at 54K miles, smooth idle and acceleration, and no rust! This isn't even a garage-kept car. Very easy to do work on, and parts are easy to upgrade and install. The handling is great. You drive the car, the car doesn't drive you.
Great family car--the back seat is small enough for children to be absolutely comfortable.
If you love to take your mountain bike beyond your neighborhood, this isn't a car you want to put a roof rack or rear bike rack onto.
With regular maintanence, the car can last you up to 200,000 miles or until you run it into the ground.

SPORTY, GOOD GAS MILEAGE, GREAT UP HILLS, GREAT FOR SHORT PEOPLE (I'M 4'10")

Weakness:

SPARK PLUGS BLOW OUT OF ENGINE CONSTANTLY, HEAD STRIPPED PRIOR TO ME OWNING. WHEEL BEARINGS WENT TWICE ON LEFT SIDE, NOISY INTERIOR, EXHAUST LOUD, TOO SMALL IN BACK AND TRUNK TOO SMALL FOR ANYTHING. RUSTING AROUND FRAME BY TIRES (ACTUALLY COMING OFF)

WOULDN'T RECOMMEND THIS CAR TO ANYONE. RIGHT NOW NOT WORTH A PENNY BECAUSE OF HEAD AND BLOWING SPARK PLUGS. ONLY GOOD THING IS GREAT GAS MILEAGE. THIS PARTICULAR CAR ISN'T WORTH ANYTHING TO ANYONE. HATE TO SEE IT SOLD BECAUSE I COULD NEVER LIVE WITH MYSELF FOR GIVING SOMEONE THE SAME PROBLEMS I HAD WITH IT.

great value for the car. I don't know why the Geo discontinued making this model.

I would reccommend this vehicle - japaneese engineering with american price tag.

Model Reviewed: base

Strength:

Base automatic is about the lowest of the low for this model...having said that, it has good tight steering, appealing body style for an older car, good gas mileage (23/27), A/C is cold, good reliable horn (I would know), and it's very low to the ground (I like)

Weakness:

Virtually no backseat/trunk, leaks steering fluid, timing belt snapped around 80k, muffler needed replacement at 90k, transmission blew circa 100k, now at 110k and just got sorely-needed struts and brake work, rack and pinion (I can't spell) needs to be fixed, occasionally sputters out when you switch on A/C from a dead stop, measley 90 hp won't blow a whole lot of people off the line (w/ automatic) but gsi model w/ 5-spd is considerably quicker

Mine costed $2400 and there's probably been around that much of work done to it over the past two years. It's ideal for college kids and for squeezing into downtown parking spaces. I wouldn't recommend mine to anyone, but if you can find a good one, they can be one of the best early 90's cars on the road.

Strength:

I purchased this car as a second vehicle for daily driving. It's looks are appealing and quite modern for its age. Gas mileage is great, 30 - 35 mpg. The 5 speed transmission makes it feel peppy. No real problems to speak of. I find this vehicle very reliable. Current vehicle mileage is 90,000.

Weakness:

Extremely small - I personally consider it a 2 seater! Its tends to be noisy. Loud exhaust. Lack of options, pw, cruise etc...

I paid $3000 for my Storm. I would recommend this style car to a younger person - college age. I do mostly city driving - for this purpose the car is perfect. I would not recommend any distance driving just because it wouldn't be very comfortable with the lack of room and options. Ride is a little rough and may be tiresome after a awhile. I must say for this type of a car, it really turns heads. Many people are very impressed with the looks and want to know what it is. Although the paint job may attract some of that - its bright red with white Skunk stripes. Reminds me alot of the Ford Probe GT with the stripe package. Its an eye catcher.

Toyota MR2 - I retired my Toyota after 130,000 miles on it. I only retired it because the floor was rusted out. Otherwise I would still be driving it. My Geo Storm gives me the impression it may be just as dependable as the Toyota. Although comfort and options are not equal.
