The alternator went 2 times. I had to have tons of stuff done to the stearing. It sounded loud, ate oil, and didn't always startafter about a year. I would never buy a cavalier after the alternator problems I had. Similar Products Used: 2002 Neon, 1991 Camry |

Cavalier, 4 door, automatic
Strength:
It handles like a dream. I have no problems figuring out where I am on the road. There are over 103,000 miles on it and it is still going strong, no funny noises or strange acts. Checked it out on carfax and It has been great throughout it's life. It is also fairly decent on gas.
Weakness:
Trivial things, really. It does have 2 front cup holders, but the very front one is too shallow, and really isn't pratical. The other one is in the center console, when you flip the cover open, which is deep enough, but not the best of angles to get at when driving. The driver seat could be a little higher, and at less of a scoop angle, but it is not nearly as bad as the Neon seats. Oh, I love this car. Love it, love it, love it! It handles like a dream, I have had no problems with it what so ever. Similar Products Used: Plymouth Neon, which is inferior. Hyundai Accent, which handles quite similar. Chevy Cavalier Wagon (brothers car) which is a 1988, and still working fine as well. Handles almost the same. |

Cavalier
Strength:
This car has many strengths. -Great gas mileage -Great handling (the car handled curves very well) -Great reliability (didn't have one major mechanical repair even though I drove it on rough mountain roads and used it for a delivery car) -Good power for a 4-cylinder engine -Good comfort -Decent factory installed stereo -American designed and made -All controls are placed very nicely
Weakness:
The weaknesses that I thought it had are relatively minor. -As the miles piled up, the car got more noisy. I wouldn't notice the rattles since I drove it often, but I would have friends make remarks on them. I would notice the difference when I road in a quiet car. -The trunk space is a little bit small. I wished that there was a little bit more of that in it. -Air conditioner went out at around 100k miles, but I didn't care as I live in a cool, arid climate. I love this car. My car has approximately 140,000 miles on it and shows no sign of slowing down. Unfortunately, I was in an accident recently and I am now being forced to sell the car. I bought the car in 1998 with 30,000 miles on it. After driving it for over 100,000 miles, it still drives very nice. I literally have driven this car into places where 4x4 trucks wouldn't go. I am an avid fly-fisherman and would take this car into rough mountain roads. I never had any doubt that it would get me out. This car also has served me well as both a commuter car and a delivery car. I followed all of the maintenance as was suggested by the owner's manual and I didn't have one major mechanical flaw. The most expensive thing that I had to do was change the serpentine belt at 80,000 miles (which is routine maintenance). My air conditioner went out at about 100k miles, but that was not a big deal for me since I live in a cool, arid climate. I never got it repaired. Even though the car has only a 4-cylinder engine, I thought that it had pretty good power. I live in Wyoming where there a trip over the mountains is a daily occurence. I never had a problem accelerating up hills to pass other cars. For comfort, this car is great. I once sat in it for 18 straight hours on a long roadtrip and felt fine when I got out. It handles very well. Wyoming is also known for its wind. It would blow the car around some, but not as much as other cars. Similar Products Used: 1993 Honda Civic |

Chevy Cavalier RS
Strength:
1. Gas mileage. 2. Sporty appearance. 3. Reliable so far. 4. Great speakers. 4. F
Weakness:
1. Minor electrical/cosmetic problems 2. "Interesting" brakes 3. Engine not all that powerfull 4. Not much confidence it'll reach 100,000 safely. And piece of mind is key. Having previously owned a 1987 Chevy Cavalier, I decided I hadn't had enough pain yet... so I bought this one. Here's how it breaks down. APPEARANCE: Pretty sporty looking (particlularly in black and with custom brake, head and blinker lights added). Some issues with the paint, but overall relatively minor. RELIABILITY: At 53,000 miles (all city)so far so good, although (having read other's horror stories), I do keep my fingers crossed. Starts up great in cold weather and there have been no real engine problems so far. PROBLEMS: Only major problems were replacing the brakes/rotors as well as the motor for the driver's side power window (PS. getting out of the car to pay tolls is particularly degrading...). Minor problems include cheap plastic interior parts breaking, motor for rear view windows no longer working, and fluctuating temperature and full guages (which has, on occasion, either left me out of gas or wondering if the car was going to overheat). PERFORMANCE: With a 4 cylinder 2.2 liter engine, I'm left with a car that looks quite a bit sportier than it actually is. To its credit, it does handle well and have ok acceleration. In hindsight, I think the 2.4 liter Z24 would've been better. RANDOM STUFF: It's got pretty good stock speakers and (at least for me anyway) fits like a glove. ... Of course, that's probably because I don't ever have to sit in the back seat... OVERALL: Not a bad car so far... but I think I've learned my lesson. You get what you pay for. Think about it... you can get a new, seriuosly hot Acura RSX-Type S fully loaded for like 23k. Realistically, that isn't that much more than a fully loaded Cavalier. I love my car, but next time (having heard countless stories from my father - a GM employee), I'm going import. Sorry Chevy, thanks for the memories. For the money, it handles well and has pretty good pep for a four banger. The 2.4L twin cam that you hear so many bad things about isnt that bad. I do however change the oil myself EVERY 2000 miles and use syn oil and the best filter I can get around here. I tell you every time I take it out, I bring it home smelling like it just went around Bristol and the dang car keeps running.
Weakness:
The dealer. They aren't much good at collision repairs. Cars got more problems after they tried to repair it than it did after the accident. All in all its been a good car. Had it in to the dealer a few times but for minor problems. The big problems have been user induced. I keep trying to tell myself its not a vette but my foot doesn't wanna listen. A ride the livin you know what out of this car and the things that have broken haven't been that bad. Besides which, the dealer covered them anyway. Thank god for extended warranties though:)Its a good car for the price. Similar Products Used: Beretta-*sigh*. Honda Civic-what a turd. Ford focus-HAHAHAHA! nice one Ford! try again. |

Strength:
Dependability, it was always there when i needed it. It got hit by a deer, rearended by a cherokee, and hit a guardrail(my fault) and it still kept going. This is a good car for someone starting out..i really liked mine.
Weakness:
Not the best looking car, and the interior is plain, but who cares as long as you get from point A to point B. The cavalier that i purchased was my car..a great car. Sure it had problems..but i got the car with 54,000 miles on it, and when i got rid of it, it had 130,000. It saw the garage twice, and one alternator repair, one starter, and just the usual stuff. Cavalier coupe
Strength:
Good Eotech engine, nice styling, tight steering with nice braking (no ABS)good gas mileage, No squeeks/rattles
Weakness:
The Cavalier has not changed drastically in about a decade which means it is being built on old technology practices, The Cobalt will be replacing the Cav in 2005 and it should be an awsome replacement. I work for GM so I got a great price on a 2 door model. Options: Sport package, and popular package, and cruise controll, and 4 speed auto trans. Color: Green metalic. Handles great. has pleanty of power, great eye appeal, fun to drive and feels tight on the corners. Similar Products Used: Chevy Monza in the 80s, |

I bought this car with a friend of mine who also owned one and I can`t tell you how wrong he was. In the first 3 months the whole clutch went out and already have spent 900.00 on parts and labor. Getting this car fixed ain`t cheap and this is the second day I`ve had it back from the shop and it`s doing the same thing..............something to do with the clutch. So its back to the mechanic first thing in the morning to fix what was already supposed to be taken care of. maybe I should`nt judge the whole car based on one problem. Other than that it seems okay but I have had alot of people tell me they`re lemons unless something happened and they started building the newer ones better. Mine is a 94 and I have had nothing but problems. If you want advice on a car that will last you until the cows come home...........and I mean all the cows. Buy a honda or a toyota or some kind of import. Honda has my vote, something about them rice rockets...........they just last and last. over 200,000 miles on the one I had. But stay away from cavalier !! |
