Strength:

Good on gas, bright yellow color is nice, decent acceleration.

Weakness:

Interior parts cheap, drives like a sedan, tires are too small too handle Canadian winters.

I bought this car new in the fall of '02. I haven't ever had it break down and the fuel milage is good. Its a great car for city driving as well as highway. Dependable for work.

Ok, 110,000 miles on it now. Fuel guage is working properly now and only other thing to go bad is the rack bushings have finally gone bad. I am going to change those soon I hope. I made the mistake of puting a Fram Air Hog air filter in the car. Gained some power but fuel economy went down the toilet. I put a regular filter back in and its all better now. I am changing the brakes soon. The best brakes so far I've found for this car is the Bosch rotors and Raybestos pads. They have lasted for about 38,000 miles. Still a good car and very dependable. Wife drove it to Tennessee this last weekend and back. I live in Michigan. Well good luck with yours.

Strength:

Good acceleration. Decent Gas mileage.

Weakness:

Radiator problems. Small. Interior is cheap. Console has no purpose at all. Engine problems. They make it so you can't get to the thermostat.

I do NOT reccomend cavaliers whatsoever. I will never buy another one again. I've had nothing but problem after problem with this car. They stopped making them for a reason! My car will have a light on the dash saying it needs antifreeze almost every other day, and once you put the antifreeze in, the car overheats and shakes really bad especially when coming to stops. The only good thing about this car would probably be the peppiness it has for a 4 cylinder car. But overall, I'm looking forward to getting a new car! After having nothing but problems, I cant wait to get rid of it.

Strength:

- really wonderful acceleration, which i love since i enjoy breaking speed limits (i mean, come on, i AM 19) - decent size trunk for storage for a small car - ok looking car for a high school student - inexpensive as well

Weakness:

- cup holders are shallow and useless - passenger seat locks into place at far distance, if you dont like the fact that it rolls back so far, tough luck! if you try to change it, the seat just shifts back and forth uncomfortably - WASTES GAS LIKE NO OTHER! i pay crap loads each week to fill my tank back up, what a waste of money - cheap insides - its all plastic and not very good looking - i've had endless problems with my cavalier, with brakes, transmission, engine, gas tanks, and odd dashboard noises that never went away

i would imagine buying a newer model would give you alot more benefits than buying a really old one. although i don't believe it is worth buying a brand new cavalier (they deppreciate rather quickly), don't buy an old one! i got my cavalier 2 years ago and i am ready for a new car already. true, its been able to get me place to place fine (i was in high school when i got it, now in college where i hardly use it) as a teenager/young adult would need, but its really just a piece of junk. its cheaply made, the side paneling of my seats does not connect anymore and i cant figure out how to reattach it. i must have brought it to the mechanic 5,000 times since i've gotten it, and lately an engine check sign has been blinking, but i just had it checked and they said nothing is wrong! even though im in college, i still am seriously considering buying a new different car. this car is really cheap, so if you're looking for a cheap, decent, inexpensive car its ok. plus a year ago, my dashboard began making a rattling sound THAT NEVER STOPS!

Another update in case anyone is curious. The car now has 90,000 miles on it and still going strong. However, the sending unit in the fuel tank has gone bad and am replacing this weekend and I had to replace the battery(original) about a month ago. Wife ran out of gas when guage said half tank. I did an oil change last night and cut the filter open, which I do every other oil change, to look for metal in the oil and came up with nothing. Not even a flake. I use regular Valvoline 10w30 in the winter and 10w40 in the summer and I use the Mobil oil filters. Car is still getting 29-32 Mpg on her road trips. Thats it. good luck with your cavs.

Strength:

Great motor with decent acceleration. Good room upfront.

Weakness:

Brakes suck, lots of brakes. Not an unknown problem.

Bought my Z24 brand new but later in the year. This car has never seen a garage and has been subject to sloppy Chicago area snow, salt, gravel, etc. The body still looks great. No rust anywhere (well maybe just a tad on the underside of the hood). The car has 128,000 and even though I've done some major repairs on it, I don't consider the repairs to be out of the ordinary. It still gets great gas mileage, uses no oil (I have always used sythetic) and I going to keep it until I don't think it's going to run anymore. Still looks good, still runs great. Why not keep it. I highly recommend Cavaliers.

Strength:

Great car for the price, no major problems the 7 years I drove it.

Weakness:

Some of the parts were pretty cheaply made. My seat belt adjustment and the tilt lever for the chair eventually broke, but what do you expect - it IS a cavalier! :-)

I purchased a 1998 Cavalier in October of 1997, and had no major problems with it in the 7+ years I had it. It's a great little car, and with the K&N filter, CD player, rims, spoiler, and sunroof I ended up putting on, it looked pretty sporty, too! In fact, I liked my Cavalier so much that I just purchased a new 2005 one. I always said that when I was going to buy another new car that I would get something nicer than a cavalier, but I had a hard time even looking at anything else. I have friends with more expensive cars that have had a lot of problems, and I've had such great luck with cavaliers that I decided to stick with them. Now I have a 2005 cavalier LS sports coupe with power everything. In the 2+ months I've had it - I love it! Absolutely no problems, and it's fun to drive. I just wish it wasn't winter so I could keep it looking nice and ride with the moonroof open!

Model Reviewed: Cavalier 2.2L 5spd

Strength:

-Cheap -Goood Mileage -Reliable -Fun to drive -Plenty big enough for my 6'2" frame -Good looking (at least to me) -Good steering and brake feel

Weakness:

-Depreciates quickly, so buy used -Cheap interior, squeaky when it's cold -Could have a sportier suspension (like the Z24) -2.4L's are not quite as reliable I hear

I bought this car because of it's low price, good gas mileage, and reliability, and have owned it for 4 years. It's been a great car for me because I'm a student and it's an economical car. I own a white base model 2 door 2.2L 5spd. My biggest complaint is that there's no air, tilt, or cruise on this particular car. In the 4 years that I've owned the car I've only put about $200 cdn into repairs, and they were all minor problems: abs sensor, trunk and door locks, and a minor exhaust leak. It's worth noting that the car has 152,000km on it and that I drive it really hard sometimes (5000+ rpm almost daily). Also, my current brakes have lasted me over 80,000km, and the stock battery is still good. Had to replace fan belt at 130,000km. (Note: If you have an older 5spd like mine, change the tranny fluid... it'll shift much more smoothly) It's not the sportiest car, but with the 5 spd it has enough power as long as you don't mind reving the engine a little. The ecotec and the 2.4L have more power. The suspension is a little on the soft side, so there's a fair bit of body roll, but the ride's pretty decent and it's a fun car to drive.
