Aurora
Strength:
Very good comfort, performance, style. Very reliable. A lot of car for the money.
Weakness:
No weaknesses to speak of. Production volume was relatively low for the Aurora “classics” (95-99 model years), so a good one may be hard to find on the used car market. (Bought it new in ’98.) Simply a pleasure to drive. This car performs smoothly and competently at any speed up to 140 mph (thanks to the “Autobahn” performance package). The Aurora is very quiet, solid and rattle-free like a luxury car should be. Acceleration is strong. The smooth melodic performance of the 250HP 32-valve 4.0L V8 is a definite plus. (Thankfully, Oldsmobile did not offer a V6 for the ''95-''99 model years.) This car has more legroom, trunk room and looks better (I think) than the 2001-02 Auroras, although those are also excellent cars. The original Michelin P235/60R16 99V tires are well matched to the car. The new "Energy Plus" version of these tires I replaced them with perform even better. This car has all of the bells and whistles of today’s “near luxury” cars, even though it’s now a 7 year old design. There is plenty of room in the front and rear for 6-footers like myself. Both 8-way power/heated front leather seats are very comfortable. The driver seat has 2-positon memory and both front seats have mid and lower power-adjustable lumbar support. The dual-zone automatic climate control system cools the interior quickly, even in hot Houston summers. The 6-speaker AM/FM/CAS/CD sound system is magnificent. The Trip Computer, Driver Information Center, auto load leveling, auto traction control, auto off-delay headlights, fog lamps, rear window / side mirror defoggers and garage door opener are among the other STANDARD features. The power sunroof both tilts and slides and the chrome wheels look great on this car. Similar Products Used: I also own a 1999 Oldsmobile Intrigue 3.5L V6, another excellent car. This Aurora is the next step up in every way. |

Strength:
The mammoth engine with vvt-i technology. Pretty good quality for an american lemon. Cheap, fast and shy looking. Comfy comfy, comfy seats.Nice radar system to track down mechanics to fix this lemon.
Weakness:
Handling is like a lincoln navigator. Nice radio with pop-up antenna option. Greasy muffler. The curves on this car make it look so sexy. The door slams like my 1960 beetle. Peppy engine, yet noisy. The cabin is very noisy, I can even hear the t.v inside my house from the passenger seat.Comfy seats, but I got 2 operations on my neck for falling asleep while driving the car. Steering wheel sticks to my hands like velcro. Similar Products Used: 1977 pontiac firebird, 1998 lexus Ls430, 2000 audi a6,2001 subaru wrx. |

Aurora V-8
Strength:
Everything!!!!!
Weakness:
NONE!!!! The 2001 Aurora V-8 is the best car I have ever seen or driven in the 42 years that I have been driving! Its power, when using premium gas, is equal to that of my 1972 Cutlass 442 which has a 455 OAI V-8! Similar Products Used: None. The Aurora is my first new car in 29 years. |

Strength:
I think the workmanship, seats, brakes (4-whl-disk, ABS) and engine are the best items in this car. Oh ya, the car gets 27mpg highway and 18mpg city, with an average of about 22mpg.
Weakness:
I have a rattle in the passenger door that is caused by the fancy HVAC duct in the door panel. I think a clip fell off and now the duct is rattling on some piece of plastic. The door panel (and other interior items for that matter) is actually very well insulated from noises. Overall, I believe this is the best car GM has ever built. It is solid, comfortable, reliable and powerful. The car has that stiff, solid "German" feel to it. The soft leather heated seats are the best, better than my lay-z-boy at home! I have not had a single problem other than a stop-light-stall one-time issue. Change the oil every 3000 mi, that's it. The 250-hp 4.0-L V8 is a good motor. I am from the old-school 350 cube overhead valve ideals, so this 32 valve double-overhead-cam thingie always leaves me skepical. However, the engine is quick and light, lacks low-end torque, but get it past 4400rpm and it comes alive. Similar Products Used: 1989 Mercury Gran Marquis-beater I bought for $500, doesn't compare. |

Aurora 4.0
Strength:
Actually handled and felt better on the road than the 2001 Seville STS I WENT to buy. Power, luxury, comfort and style. Best steering wheel controls I have ever used (cruise, stereo, climate). Improved sound system adds an additional touch of home.
Weakness:
Some interior trim issues... the change drawer, the eye-high stop light lining both pretty shoddily installed. Took a few weeks to get over how much smaller the car 'looked' than my '95. Should have kept a little closed visual relationship with the original (not that the 2001 looks bad!) For the money you cannot beat the value of the Aurora. I love the driver-centric cockpit and the new styling throughout. The offset shifter was a particularly nice touch. I wish they had developed this in rear wheel drive as well as developed a shift-on-the-fly similar to Chrysler's. I wanted luxury and comfort.. but as most greedy consumers I wanted my performance, too. The Aurora, while not a racer, does not disappoint. The 4 litre Northstar does a very nice job of motivating you through traffic and seems to feel very comfortable while cruising at illegal speeds. I have noticed some problems in high winds despite the weight of the car. The suspension is finely tune... which is actually a drawback if you live in an area with shoddy roadways. The car seems to pull to the left constantly... until you get on a level road where it is rock-solid. Other than that, the car is a pleasure to drive, even for extended distances. Aurora 4.0
Strength:
Nice V8, great 4T80E trans, supple leather, real wood, all the computer bells and whistles!!, handling, quality and value.
Weakness:
The dealerships - they need to know the product better. They tried to sell me a V6 model even after I repeatedly told them I only wanted the V8. They had to order my car since they had only V6's left. They just wanted to sell what was on the lot. Olds should have never offered a V6, even if it is a good engine. This is a luxury car! Extremely nice car that I am proud to own both because of its luxury and value...I got a luxury car w/out paying too much! A smart buy all around given the competition. With 18,660 miles so far, no problems, nada, none at all. I like the wood, leather, chrome wheels and all the neat stuff like the rain sense wipers and all. Similar Products Used: 1999 Lexus - I traded this in on the Olds and DO NOT regret it at all. You cannot believe how much less maintenace the olds demands over this over rated Lexus! |

Strength:
Power, handling, smooth ride.
Weakness:
Cost of parts I love this car! It's the most comfortable car I've ever owned. Bought it used 2 years ago with 36,000 miles on it, now has 90,000 miles on it. The only thing we have done (beyond regular oil changes) is replace 2 tires on the front, front brakes, and replaced the serpentine belt, but we were warned about the serpentine belt requiring replacement at about 60,000 miles (we replaced it at 85,000 miles). We have not had any problems with this car at all. The memory seats are fantastic since my husband and two oldest boys are all around 6 feet tall and I'm 5'4. I love having the power of a V-8, especially since I work in the 3rd traffic-congested area in this country. Similar Products Used: Test drove a Lexus which was selling for a comparable price before I bought the Aurora, thought the Lexus was quite a bit overpriced for what it was. I had been driving a mercury sable station wagon which I also thought was nice, but the Aurora is a huge step up. Would definitely buy an Aurora again and again and again. |

Strength:
Will go faster than you dare. Seat comfort is great.
Weakness:
Sound system mediocre for a car in this price range. 4 air conditioning compressors in 3.2 years. External trim had to be replaced after 2 years. Tires wear quickly (25,000 replacement, rotated regularly and very expensive to replace ($1000 set of four). Several electrical problems. As stated earlier. Do not consider this car at any price. All my repairs (many) have been performed under warranty so there was only inconvenience. If you do buy a used one, tuck a few thousand away.........you're gonna need it. Nothing
Weakness:
slow and bumpy P.S. it's a p.o.s. i don't like this car. It displeases me a lot. when I compared it to my Geo Metro and my Dodge Neon it was a lot slower and a whole lot bumpier. I would drive my GEO pimp mobile anyday over this discrace of a car. Similar Products Used: Geo Metro and Dodge Neon |
