Strength:

Styling, 4.3 liter engine, large trunk

Weakness:

Build quality, Quality Control, Floaty Ride on Twisty Roads

I love the look of my CLK. However, in terms of quality, it's the worst Mercedes I've ever owned. Mercedes has taken a cost cutting approach from the C-class to the S-class and the CLK is no exception.

Likes:
*Acceleration provided by the 4.3 liter is admirable from 50-70 if a bit lethargic from a standing start.
*Styling
*Xenon headlights
*Huge trunk for plenty of luggage
*Brakes are awesome
Problems:
*Squeaks & Rattles from dash & sunroof
*Squeaks from driver and passenger
*Inferior interior materials
*Transmission module had to be replaced after the car would not engage Drive

Criticism:
*The CLK430 uses the same suspension as the CLK320 which is to say it's very soft and not suited for aggressive driving.

My car listed for just over $54k

UGLY ALLOY RIM DESIGN!! Cheap tires
Bought some Chrome rings for the hear lights at the dealers and they cost $175! Just for some plastic that attaches with double sided tape!! probably loose them in the hot summer..
Gotta loose that ugly antanna..MB could've designed something better than that!

Overall great car so far..No major problems at 1600 miles...

Strength:

ride quality, braking ,acceleration, stunning good looks

Weakness:

none so far other than the close to one year wait to get one

Simply put this car will leave a smile permanately planted on your face.
Very refined. Was expecting the ride to be harsher. The ride is firm but never jarring. Acceleration is unbelievable. Very quite at cruising speed.
Get one if you can get your hands on one.
For those not familliar with the CLK55 its the full AMG version with the 5.5 litre engine. 342 hp, larger brakes and beefed up suspension.
also 5 stars to the Michelin pilot sport tires

We've had our 2001 CLK320 for a few months now. It's a black car with the charcoal interior and all available options including COMAND, Multi-Contour seats and Xenon headlights.

This is the prettiest car I've ever owned. Everything about it looks right, though my son tells me the rear end is reminiscent of a Civic.

The 6 cylinder is not a bad engine, but a neighbor has has the 8 cylinder and, wow, it's a much different car. The bottom line was that we didn't want to spend any more money for a more powerful engine that we really didn't need.

The interior of our car looks great, but we do have a few gremlins. The sunroof rattles, less frequently when the sun shade has been retracted. The air vents in the dash also seem to rattle and the passenger seat seems to squeak.

Also, the passenger window will no longer express up. You have to leave your finger on the button to close the window.

The only option that we find to be a waste is the COMAND. It's unnecessarily complicated and is not nearly as competent as the navigation system in my son-in-law's Lexus LS430.

My husband replaced the bland stock wheels and had a set of the AMG/CLK 55 wheels installed.

It's a nice car, but a little disappointing considering all I'd heard about Mercedes.

2001 CLK 430 Cabriolet

This is a great looking car.

Its brakes are excellent and the power is more than adequate for a touring car.

Now, it gets ugly....

The build quality is not worthy of the MB badge. Squeaks and rattles emit from the interior on a daily basis. The plastic interior pieces would look more at home in a Toyota Corolla. The base of the seats is wrapped by the cheapest piece of plastic I've ever seen since I drove a 78 Ford Fiesta back in high school.

The radio is mediocre at best and no in-dash CD player is offered.

The computer that monitors the transmissions shifts has been replaced twice.

This is what you get when Mercedes offers an 8 cylinder convertible for a little over 60k. They have to cut corners to achieve such a price.

Raise the price and start building top quality cars again.

Strength:

Drop-dead gorgeous AMG looks, incredible torque, and timeless beauty. Every now and then I will see another CLK320 and wonder why they didn't spend the extra $8-10K for the V8 and AMG body kit & wheels, or another CLK430 and sigh because I'm lucky to have one too, or CLK55 and wish I was wealthier.

Weakness:

Parking lot scratches/dents, $120 oil changes, european quality, seats do squeak but I don't really care

"Love at first sight"....this car was sitting in the middle of a Lamborgini dealership so I had to buy it for its performance, value, and MB prestige.
After the first test time, I stopped my car search and drove it home 2 hrs later. Like any new (European)car, small annoying problems exist. That's why I purchased the extended warranty. Luckily, the car has been near-perfect. Imagine waiting for the red light to turn green while other drivers stare at your car and in 6.1 sec they are in your rear mirror. Don't let the valet boy out of your sight!
