Strength:

I love the size, all my family can ride comfortably. The style of the car is proportioned for a nice look.

Weakness:

The airride system is a monster in price and repair. We have replaced the radiator, all brakes, and two of the airride struts and although I love the vehicle, Lincoln created a money monster. It has a mind of it's own whether to pump up the struts or not. It is moody!!! The worst thing of all is no one seems to know what the problem is. It doesn't seem to leak air they say, but the pump runs continuosly, so the leveling system must be moving the car, yes there is also a leveling system. Trust me if you want one buy a new one and get rid of it after 5-8 years or when the struts start causing you problems. Also they run hot(they have aluminum heads) so you must be sure to watch this. But it is a nice riding car when the ride works. Because you see if the airride doesn't pump up then you won't be riding any where. It sits too low to the ground and drags front and back. GOOD LUCK!!!

I think for the money buy something else and save a few thousand in repairs.

Strength:

- 32 valve V8, makes power and i mean lots of it
- Ride far superior than any other luxury car including 1999 Lexus LS400
- Amazing stereo, this stereo has some ability and no sound distortion
- Best looking luxury car, it is beautiful period
- Handling for a car this size is amazing
- Smooth idle, no vibration
- Transmission downshifts quicker than a blink of the eye when you floor it

Weakness:

- Original wipers that came with this car only lasted 2 weeks and they were squeaking
- Trunk is way too big, it is huge
- Hard to hand wash car, t is big

im 19 and i bought this car brand new when i was 18, some people at high school called it a granny mobile because it was a lincoln and when they hop in for a ride they get out amazed by the power and handling of this beast and they love the exhilarating stereo. This car is a chick magnet because it is so beautiful. It burns no oil at all, none, nano.

Comfortable
Easy to handle

Weakness:

Unreliable
Many mechanical failures

Very disappointed in the car. The car was a programmed car that we purchased with 18,000 miles on it in Mar. 1995 from a Lincoln Mercury dealer. We now have only 56,000 mileson it and the transmission had to be replaced and the head gasket had to be replaced, although both were under warranty. We have had major trouble with air conditioning and rear suspension. The car has been in to the dealer repeatedly, as well as our own mechanic. We will NOT buy another Lincoln Continental!

Strength:

Great ride, steering, brakes, and luxury extras. Very good trunk.
Excellent finish and car is not prone to rust. Also the engine has
performed well and is now at 118,000 miles

Weakness:

Suspension system, body mounts, head gasket.

The car has required frequent and costly maintenance, a large part of
which relates to the many new things it broupght to the market place.
Once many of these things were replaced or corrected, it started to
settle down.

Regardless of the reliability factor, I have loved this car and
still do. However, right now I am trying to find brake master
cylinder parts and have not been successful, so I may have to
modify the brake system (costly) or get rid of the car.

Lincoln with this car introduced many new things, and I think in the
time frame of 1988 they were far ahead.

Strength:

This car is luxurious, comfortable, still get fair gas mileage.
Looks good. Has a lot of gadgets.
Being a "carnut" I keep everything serviced to the hilt. The engine has never used oil even at the present 130,000 mileage. I like the size.

Weakness:

CONTINENTIAL, IN GENERAL DEPRECIATE VERY RAPIDLY BECAUSE OF COST OF REPAIR. Cost of repairs are ridiculous. THE MAIN COMPLAINT: The air bag SUSPENSION. It will only last apr. 50 - 60,000 miles and cost about $2000 to replace. I have replaced once and it is going out again, now.
Ford should not sell any system this weak.!!! If I did not have a mechanic in the family, I would never have kept the car over two months. To many
systems have problems, too often. the v-6 engine is too small for this car.
The transmission is known to be weak. I have replaced with a rebuilt one once.

I would not recommend it except, they are very cheap. After about 3 or 4 years of age, they are cheap. If you can repair them yourself, it is a luxury car, at a cheaper price.

Strength:

Lots of power and reasonably good handling. Very comfortable. No problems with engine or drive train. The hands free phone is very handy.

Weakness:

Worst car I've ever owned for body & trim quality (including an Alpha Romeo which was the previous record holder.) This car was in the shop 8 times before the door panels would fit properly. The current problem is severe window fogging that just began this winter. The day I took mine in there were 3 other Contintals with the same problem & the dealer doesn't have a clue how to fix it.

The aggravation factor - monthly trips to the dealer - outweighs the benefits. I wouldn't buy another one. I had planned on buying the LS but I am having second thoughts.

Much better power for your dollar than the imports such as BMW & Lexus. Better power, comfort and visibilty than the Chrysler LHS.

Strength:

Power from Intech V8, Smooth ride with firm european suspension, Gadget Heaven, Smooth yet powerful brakes, Trunk is large, Adjustable suspension and steering useful, Bright headlights, Feels solid in every way, Instrument cluster very easy to read, Great highway cruiser, No torque steer.

Weakness:

Heavy doors, Wish it had the Mark 8's HID headlamps and 290 horesepower V8, Needs Dual climate control. Once the Air Suspension failed and i took it to the dealer and found out the switch was somehow shutoff and the onoff switch is located in the trunk.

I would buy this car only if i could afford the gas and high regular maintainence costs.

I wouldn't buy it if i couldn't afford one because of the high cost of changing oil and flushing and filling cooling system.

90,000 Miles and not a problem

Model Reviewed: Lincoln Continental

Strength:

Looks muscular and powerful, Interior design and quality is first-rate, Runflat tires and tire pressure moniter are a great safety advantage, Driver select system is very advanced and lets you choose three suspension and steering settings and also let's you turn off memory seats, reverse mirrors and traction control and a few other things too, The interior is dead quiet and the ride is exceptional and very pleasing while the handling is way to good for a car this size, RESCU system works better than OnStar and the service is faster and more accurate, The Intech V8 accelerates like a mad dog and it sounds like a muted mustang type burble that's very pleasing, when you don't want power the motor is quiet and smooth as glass, the A/C is the only one i've ever seen in a car that works in florida's burning weather but at home in indianapolis i just leave the auto setting on 65 degrees, The cornering lamps are helpful in seeing where you are going before you turn.

Weakness:

No HID Xenon headlamp option, You can't get the luxury apperance package if you order the runflat tire option.

If you want a luxury car in the $45K range the continental is you're best bet while being the best looking luxury car. I would recommend it to people who have large families and need a huge trunk in a car with a luxurious interior and lots of truly high-tech features and lot's of power.

I don't recommend it to people who buy import,s because they complain about the ride and handling being bad while the continental actually is faster and has more grip than the BMW 7-series and MB-S class. With the ride settings being variable the ride is alway's perfect whether you want a plush ride, firm ride, or normal ride.

Similar Products Used:

97 Mercedes-Benz S600: The S600 is bigger but offers a smaller trunk, the continental has more gadgets and technology.
98 Cadillac Seville: The seville has more power but less technology and looks worse than the continental. Plus the seville is not reliable at all. My brother paid over $5000.00 in repairs the first six months and cadillac + gm are doing nothing about it, the caddy dealer sadid the seville is not reliable at all.
