I just love the look. Up until I was smitten with my Conti, I drove/raced VW's. I was so used to the tin can stiffness that I couldn't allow myself to entertain the thought of driving an "old man's" car. I saw my Conti, the dark forest green grabbed me and that's all she wrote. It took some time to get used to driving a 4000lb pillow, but I love the car and it's served me well. I bought it 2 years ago with 117k on it. Today it has 165k. With so many of these cars around, and so many of them well maintained, purchasing a 5+ year old Conti should result in a very good value.

Weakness:

Well, I knew buying a Lincoln, I would assume a higher annual repair budget. Especially buying one with over 100k on it already. Over the past 2 years, I've totaled about $4500 in repairs, the brunt of which was in the suspension air bags (poor, poor design). Though looking designed more by a furniture company than an auto company, the seating gives little to no support. I recently drove a 96 model, and the best improvement they incorporated was the driver tailorable steering assist and ride firmness. My '92 gives you absolutely no feel for the road, no feed back through the steering and absolutely way too much float.

I love(ed) the car. It now sits in my garage with a fatal internal engine wound, and I still can't convince myself to get rid of it. I'm presently looking at purchasing a used '96. For what I paid for my car, I got what I expected and more.

Again, until I bough my Conti, I drove tight little Germans, so a comparrison would be bias. Once I got used to the size and ride, I quickly became comfortable. I'd definately buy again, and probably will seeing as how my engine recently/finally gave in at 165k.

Strength:

Powerful engine, quiet, huge trunk, powerful brakes, memory profile system, beautiful interior.

Weakness:

Front wheel drive, suspension reliability, steering feel.

All-in-all, we love the car. I had to replace all four sway bar links as well as the rear sway bar bushings to quiet the numerous clunks in the suspension when we got it. However, the roads in Michigan will take their toll on any car. Now that the suspension components are new, it rides like a dream and the parts were inexpensive. The engine is a dream and although it doesn't compare to the Cadillac STS Northstar in terms of power and sound quality (the Caddy snarled when you got on it) it is far smoother.

The memory profile system is awesome, and it makes it so much easier for two people to use the car, The keyless entry keypad on the door is wonderful, and the seating leather is buttery soft. The JBL 10 speaker premium sound is phenomenal with the CD Changer.

97,000 miles and it burns no oil and runs and looks like new. My partner and I love this car and we don't fit the typical Lincoln stereotype either as we're 31 and 28 years old! Perhaps the older you get the smarter you get!

1993 Cadillac STS. 1996 Mark VIII. The Continental is unrivaled as a highway cruiser and it gets 25 mpg on the highway and has awesome passing power. The STS was faster and sounded "cooler" but the ride in the Continental is far superior and it handles better too. The Mark VIII was a better performer but had poor wet weather traction and interior space was cramped.

Strength:

Strong motor, great insides, huge trunk, good used value, wonderful highway car.

Weakness:

Erratic Transmission

I bought this car because it was cheaper than the Cadillacs on the lot. Lincoln's lose resale value quickly. Therefore, Lincoln's make great used car buys.

The motor is great. V-8 power and a good high gear make for a near perfect highway driving experience. No equal here. You can very easily get to 90mph and not realize it because of the smoothness of the ride and the power of the motor.

The transmission is flaky. Coming out of first gear is really rough, typical of Continentals. That's the only driving flaw though.

The trunk fits more than my SUV. The car is quiet except for the purr of the motor. It has a computer which takes a little study but nothing too difficult. The seats adjust automatically to each key (driver1, driver2).

It has loads of backseat room but it was made for two passenger driving. The front seats are classics. Seats are adjustable in every direction. No wonder people buy these cars again and again.

Strength:

Large car that is great for long distance trips. Lots of room in the trunk and cab.

Weakness:

Air bag suspension, A/C system, Alternator and electrical system in general, electric windows that come off track.

Overall, this car is not for anyone to own! It is costly to maintain and is not reliable. There not even a very prestigious car to have anymore. They were basically Fords engineering experiment that they tried out on Joe public that FAILED! Honestly, I am so frustrated with my big junker that when I am done with it, I would love to see just how far I could drive it into a swamp or flag pond around here, rip the VIN and tags from it and leave it there to rust to Hell.

reliability, air shocks, gas mileage in town

I purchased this car with 50,000 miles on it. The previous owner had all the service records and alwys taken it to a Lincoln dealer for service. I thought it would be a great buy. Bad idea! I poured more money into this car than any other car I have ever owned. In just the space of 10 months I put $1650 in repairs on the car and since it was purchased new the car has had a new instrument panel, air con. compressor, alternator and the airshocks are going and needed to be replaced, a $3800 repair job. That was enough for me. I traded the piece of junk in for a Pontiac. Now I know why Lincolns depreciate quickly. $40,000 for a new one? Buy a Lexus ES300 if you want a luxury car.

Strength:

The appearance. The styling is beautiful. The inside is very comfortable, and quiet.

Weakness:

The 140 hp engine SUCKS. Not only is the power way too little for a car this size, the engine has had MAJOR problems --- most recently resulting in a class action lawsuit. Also, the car has an AIRRIDE system that WILL breakdown. It is great when it is working, but is UNRELIABLE. Oh, yea, if you think you can ride without the system --- THINK AGAIN. YOU CAN'T. The ride is so BAD, it is DANGEROUS to even dive. I AM NOT EXAGERATING. Also, the AIRCONDITIONING --- because it has the OLD refrigerant (which has probably already leaked out) is EXPENSIVE. This car, which I had for a year was a TERRIBLE decision. (I gave in to my temptation because I love the appearance of the car. But mechanically speaking, the car is TERRIBLE.

Avoid the Continental at all cost. Maybe Ford has some nice trucks, but their luxury line, DOES NOT EVEN COMPARE with Cadillac!

Similar Products Used:

I compare this car to the 93 Cadillac STS. This car is a little more expensive to purchase. But you are getting the NORTHSTAR system. Try this, look up the recalls on the Lincoln 1993, and compare with the STS. There have been NO general mechanical recalls on the Cadillac STS! Numerous on the Continental. And of course the STS has 300 whopping horse power!!!

Strength:

The best thing about this car is the comfortable ride, but that is only when the air suspension is actually working.

Weakness:

I don't know where to start. The head gasket blew at around 70K miles, and I had the motor professionally replaced with a remanufactured model at a cost of $2200. Now there's 105K miles on it and the head gasket is gone once again. I've had to replace both front and rear air bags, and the dryer for the vacuum system. The power steering has been leaking since I got the car and my mechanic says that it's a costly repair and not worth it to fix. The electrical system is also poor. The climate control does not work unless it's at full blast, I've already replace one window motor and the other work when they feel like it, and the trunk release stopped working alltogether.

What a piece of garbage! I'll never buy another Lincoln or any other car with this type of suspension. Don't go anywhere near a Ford product with the 3.8L motor unless you enjoy replacing head gaskets. They have alot of nerve charging what they do for these cars.

Very nice ride Luxurious and stable big spacey automobile with good statistics involving accidents. Strong engine very capable of exceeding 100,000 mile and more. Body very sturdy especially here in the snow belt.

Weakness:

like all the others say the air ride system is terrible. Always having problems with the system breaking down and having to replace the bags get very expensive and harder to find as the years pass by. This is still new to me but can I change the air ride to another form of suspension??????

Still would never resell the car happy with it overall........

Strength:

It is a very good highway car. Large enough for a family of 5. It saves very good on gas and a good take off. Leather seats and a button to push to see what the temperature is outside. Sideview mirrors defrost and it also has a speed alarm. Very nice.

Weakness:

The air suspension is the worst. It went out on me and it will cost me $1300.00 to repair it. I'm still making payments on this car and I cannot even drive it. Ford should get rid of the air suspensions. They do not last very long.

This is a very good car if you want something cheap and to look good in. It is very luxourios and has lots of room. The main reason why I went for it was it looked good, it was affordable and plenty of room for my children. It was very good on saving gas for all those baseball games, but to replace the air suspension in it is too expensive. It was 1300$ just to replace the front. Just think when the rear end eventually will go out, that will be 2600$. For the long run, I will not by this car ever again.

The Mazda 628 is far better than this car. More sturdier and better take off. No air suspensions.

this car handles like a dream. brand new monroe sense-a-track knows how to handle a 4500 lb car nicely at over 75 MPH!! Downshifts beautifully at speeds over 60, and the 5.0 v8 gives you enough power to overcome MOST obstacles. I love the digital dash that tells you everthing going on in the car! Im surprised it doesnt tell me when a hottie is commin by!! hahahah! anyways, i have a great kenwood sound system installed and it gives me joy pumpin up a 800 watt sound system in this great classic automobile! Car handles, rides, looks unbelieveable for a 19 yr old car. i love it so much and had offers for up to $3000 for this very car i paid $800 for!!

Weakness:

very bad gas milage. BUT, im going to tune it up and see if it increases gas milage. im getting about 14 on the highway, and about 6 on the streets. i also dislike the electrical system....its VERY TESTY!!!
