Powerful V-8 Roomy

Weakness:

Terrible build quality and reliability annoyingly loud air suspension pump

Worst car I have ever owned. After only 8 months, I have been through 2 transmissions and numerous other service issues which finally led to trading in the piece of s--- on an Acura. I thought I got a great deal on the Linc, because of the purchase price vs. content, but I guess you get what you pay for.

Strength:

The cars acceleration. The cars comfortable seats. The way the car handles itself on the freeways or hiways.

Weakness:

Repair costs can be expensive. Ford, Lincoln dealerships at least where I am at don''t like to service this old time car. Also it has some features on it that if one thing goes wrong mechanically it will cause the car not to run at all.."Example" my muffler recently came off completely, thus causing the engine not to turn back on... this is some kind of safety feature... maybe it is good? who knows?

Since I began driving cars in 1984 I have owned and leased many cars. The worst of the bunch was the Mitsubishi cars. I had major problems from day one with my 1999 Mitsubishi Galant. the dealership and Mitsubish did buy it back.. Then I had a 2000 Diamante also made by Mitsubishi, that car was also nothing but major problems. And the Diamante is the steam ship in the Mitsubishi line. The car sold at the dealership new for $35,000 .... what a rip off.... I have also driven several Lincoln Products. In 1990 a had the pleasure of leasing a Lincoln Town Car. I must say that driving that car around was nothing less than pure pleasure and fun. For such a large car it handled very well and at times I drove that car as if I was in a sports car.(haha) Well a few months ago I bought myself a 1989 Lincoln Town Car. The car came from a dealership in Marina California. The car sold for $1,370.00 with 118,000 miles on it. (was also a 1 owner Car) I had it checked out with Car Fax.. Anyway the car drives like a dream.. Power Power Power.. The seats are so comfortable and the ride is like being in a large limo... It has power seats, windows, etc. fully loaded. what a great driving car. I only hope that this car for the little money I paid will give me just as much use as I have recieved from my 1980 Mercedez Diesel touring Wagon.. 300TD.. My old Benz is still driving great with 165,000 miles on it. Drives as if it was a new car straight off the lot.... I only hope the Town Car will provide me with the same...

Weakness:

Brakes, Air Ride, If you dont do maintenance as per the schedule by Lincoln, you will find yourself with a piece of junk.

Absolute best buy I could have ever made. At 114,000 miles this car still looks and runs like the day it came off the showroom! When first purchased in 02/2001, transmission was weak and needed rebuilding (112,400) miles. With that in mind and after having the transmission rebuilt, this car is a reliable vehicle. As with this line of vehicle the key is to doing preventative maintanance. I have ridden in similar sized GM, Nissan, Chrysler vehicles and even Toyotas and none I mean NONE have the ride of the Linclon Continental! The level ride can be a problem if you do not mantain the bellows, and if you let your car sit idle. I work in real estate and easily put 300 miles a week on this car, and would not trade it for a lexus, its comfortable, roomy and the layout of the dash and components are easy to read and get to, not to mention until 1995, they kept the same body style, most of my friends and clients think its a 1995 or newer. The previous owner was good about doing scheduled maintenance so unlike some reviews, I got a good deal because I know what was getting into. My Oppinion: If you are looking at a 1990-1995 model, check for routine maintenance, if no records, dont buy. These cars are known for, if you did not do maintenance when due, are known to be junk, if its well maintained and you can verify records and are recent, and you are able to afford the routine cost of keeping up, which I will add is not cheap, you will find yourself in a very comfortable vehicle to give you many years of enjoyment.

This is without saying the second best riding car made, only the Town Car has a better ride.. I have every gadget known to man in my lincoln.. so quiet inside as to not bother you when a semi goes by.. excelent handling, I get 27 mpg in the city and 34 on the highway.. lets go for a ride if you dont believe me.. Just all around great..

Weakness:

The air ride and head gaskets are a weakness.. but preventable with the right care..

This is not a car for your average person, this car must be respected.. a little care goes along way with this car if you know what to do.. The air ride is a problem but it is preventable.. I bought this car with 65,000 miles on it over 2 years ago.. I now have 95,000 and still looks and runs like brand new.. I wouldnt trade this car for nothing else made.. All cars have their problems, it''s just knowing what they are before hand.. And knowing how to prevent them from happening..

Weakness:

Body alignment is good but not exacting:(hood to fenders). Resale value is way below average

99 My wife needed a new car. After looking at volvos we decided to see what an american car manuf, had to offer. we visited the dealer(Perry Falk) and he showed us a previous rental, We went for a test drive and enjoyed the room and comfort. We drove quite awhile and decided with the safety features looks and it was fun to drive we give it a try. So far it''s been in the shop twice missing (water in spark plug socket) they replaced all the spark plugs. A wobble when braking. (replaced all four rotors. the latter was done while my wife waited. So far the car has been most enjoyable and the milage/acceleleration for 32 valve intech engine is impressive.

Weakness:

way underpowered. noisy suspension. car sets real low to the ground which makes it hard to get in and out of.

Good looking car with lots of gadgets and luxury features.Excellent gas mileage for big car. I bought the car because we knew the previous owner had maintained the car well and had all the service records. So far we have had only a problem with the drivers side window. Air suspension parts have a history of failure but can be converted to standard struts and springs. There was a recall on head gaskets for these cars and ours was replaced at adealership under warranty at 33000 miles. I would never consider buying one new because of the cost but they depreciate rapidly and offer a good used car value.

Strength:

SMOOTH RIDE; QUIET (for a hunk of burning '70s love); Fairly reliable luxury options; a Ford V-8 motor that will take lots of abuse; a simple transmission that WORKS; Incredible styling, especially compared to other cars coming out in the late '70s; A/C is like a meat freezer and will never die; car is cheap to fix, or even fix it yourself! Did I mention the moonroof? I swear they only made moonroofs this big for visual effect. What drama as we sit at the red light and open the power windows and power moonroof all at once--and the alternator melts and we blow another 500 AMP fuse. But trust me, fellow drivers at the red light will be ogling with jealousy or, better yet, gawking with disgust!

Weakness:

Ford carburetor("Starts like a Ford!" my mechanic would say), the steering gearbox WILL wear on your late-70's full-size Ford products, and therefore your front brakes WILL shimmy slightly whenever applying moderate braking pressure--no matter what! Those power vent windows break ALL THE TIME--I've replaced both drive gears twice, but they are too cool to skimp on. Vacuum leaks ALL THE TIME: you name it--from the carburetor, from the emission system, from the A/C vent relay, and of course from the vacuum motors on those pesky-but-oh-so-nifty headlight covers. Fortunately, vacuum leaks are cheap to fix (if you can't spot 'em yourself first.) The electrical on this car is odd. It'll go a year without anything happening, then in a two week period, you'll melt half your fuses, that strange toe dimmer-switch will start shorting out your headlights, the passenger and driver side window switches will take turns working, and the too-chic Cartier roman numeral clock NEVER works--but you can get it rebuilt at a place in California (for a price.) Also, I don't think the side view mirrors ever worked in these cars--not even straight at the factory. You steer the lever to the right, the mirror goes to the left; you steer it down, the mirror goes up . . . and just when you have almost gotten it right, some dolt friend of yours slams the door nearly off the hinges because he's used to Uncle Philpot's '77 Camaro, and the mirror is now pointing straight up so you can be alert to helicopters landing on your roof. >sigh<

My first encounter with this car was senior year in high school, my best friend and I thought it would be cool to buy an old pimp mobile as a lark, and 5 years later, I would never part with it. When we saw it in the classifieds, I had no idea what it looked like, except big, a hump on the trunk lid, and those funny oval windows. When we pulled up to this old lady's house, it was in the yard, it was monstrous, and it was the ugliest car I had ever seen. I had to have it. This car is American Old Luxury at its perfection: Two-tone pearlescent leather upholstery; color-coordinated everything; power everything--even little power vent windows; the HUGEST power moonroof for lots of showing off on Friday nights or at the beach; a toe-switch for hands-free radio station scanning; certified five-body trunk; fakey walnut burl and chromed plasted trim EVERYWHERE--yum!; a big gas-guzzling 460 V-8 that gracefully purrs as it downshifts to first and gets to 70 m.p.h. in about 10 seconds without you even feeling it; the list just goes on! Anyway, most people fight over shotgun; well, in this car, my friends fight over the backseat (it's really a small leather sofa back there), and it's basically a living room on wheels with lots of style and personality and way more fun than these new luxury techno-carts that come in your choice of white, off-white, or bright white, with matching white trim and derivitive body styling. I bought mine with 50,000 miles on it and have had relatively few problems with it, and all of them were routine maintenance type problems, anyway. I get offers for it on average twice a week, even had one guy pull over as he drove by the house and ring my doorbell about the original non-white paint job; obviously it's the cry of an American car-buying public that has had enough of this boring schlock they make today. Now, as a disclaimer, you have to buy into certain things when choosing this as your preferred mode of vintage transportation: this is real luxury, i.e., it's a SMOOTH car that does everything SMOOTHLY (the doors shut themselves with no slamming, in an awe-inspiring "woomph," with a meaty click behind it) and if you don't like the feel of 5000 lbs of steel lumbering around corners, or numb, one-finger power steering, or matress-soft all-disc braking, or multiple cloudy bounces for each and every dip and dive in the road, then this car is not for you. And if you're afraid of a little power (the old fashioned kind), this is not for you, either. And if you don't like fun, definitely DO NOT buy this car.

Strength:

-Safety
-Comfort
-Big front seat
-Big back seat :-)
-Six people can fit in...legally...I have yet to see how many I can stuff in
-Big, powerful engine
-Huge trunk
-Steel all around
-Long and wide, so you have good hold on the road
-Great AC, Great heater
-Good speakers, I was actually told that I should *KEEP* the factory speakers over buying anything new
-Smooth ride
-GREAT for cruisin'
-Good pick up

Weakness:

-Gas guzzler
-Had an AM Radio (replaced with a CD player)
-The model I have does not have power windows, power seats
-Rear wheel drive...not fun in winter
-Speedometer goes up to 85....I'm sure that could change if I were to pop it in neutral and head down a steep hill
-Takes a lot of room to make a U turn without going up on a sidewalk
-Sucks in small parking lots with lots of cars and tight parking
-Two doors make for tougher access to the back seat

I've had this car for a over a year now with little problems. It had sat in a garage in Arizona for over 2 years; an old lady owned it and drove it to church and back. Her son knows my dad and he didn't have any use for it, so I got it for 1,500. My parents had wanted a "safe" car for my first car. Something with steel all over and a friggin' huge hood...so this was perfect. This car had 69,000 miles on it when I got it and now has 73,000 miles. The car's condition is almost mint sans a few little scratches on the outside and a few chips of paint. Other that it needs has a cracked bezel on the back that holds the rear light (I almost had one of these bought, but I missed the bid on E-bay). There is a minor tear in the carpet behind the driver's seat (covered up with floor mats) and a small tear on the driver seat.

It wasn't long after I got this car that I had began to have brake problems. The scariest thing was when I was heading down the main road in town following my friends in their little Mercury Tracer when my brake warning light went on. I had the brake pedal to the floor and that big boat keep sailing down that hill. Luckily I made it to the nearest McDonalds parking lot safe.

When that problem was taken care of, and winter rolled around I began having a lot of problems where I couldn't get the engine started, and that was taken care of with a head bolt heater. I guess it makes sense; a 24 year old car that spent its life in warm Arizona...ending up in cold, long, Wyoming winters.

This car has really been great to me. There's been minor work to be done, and I got new tires not so long ago but I feel that is understandable for an older car. Everytime I have gone to a mechanic I've recieved various compliments, even from people in town. I'd recommend this car to anyone looking for something safe, reliable, and an older luxery car that you don't nessisairly see all around.

After owning this car I don't know if I could ever feel safe in a little econobox, and as the mechanics have told me-"it's a classic!"
