Strength:

Quiet, Great looks, excellent instrumentation, great stereo system. Servicing at a Lexus dealer is an experience un-matched in the auto industry!

Weakness:

The GS300 engine doesn't provide the power that a "true" sports sedan should have. The leather seats are soft and prone to premature wear over time.

The Lexus GS300 has been the best automobile I've ever owned. The vehicle is solid, with good looks and a terrific ride. After a while, you loose some of your appreciation for the quiet, stable ride that the GS300 affords. However, if you drive a Ford or GM product for a day, you'll come to re-appreciate the comfort and luxury that Lexus builds into their automobiles!

It has the most style of any Lexus. It is fast and hugs the road beautifully. The sound system is wonderful. The engine is so quiet that it seems that it is not on. Driving on the freeway is just a wonderful experience. The only problem with the car is that it handles so well and drives so quietly, that one can be doing 90 mph without really realizing it.

Weakness:

nothing

I would absolutely recommend either the GS 300 or the 400. Of course, you're more likely to get a speeding ticket in a 400.

This car has a beautifull interior with tons of wood. It has an amazing sound system, and the sweet white gauges and 3-spoke stering wheel make it look like a race car. Its shifter is so sweet, i love down-shifting from 80 KPH in third to second, it pops over the redline at 7000rpm as you slow down. Even the 300 has a powerfull engine, and trust me it can go FAST. Its leather and seats are so comfy you could sit in them forever! The exterior is beautifull, with the front lights that look agressive while maintain that "Lexus Look" you might just know. The rear is also beautifull, with sweet rear tail-lights, that remind you of any Lexus you have ever seen, and a sweet exhaust fits in there very nicely.

Weakness:

The car is a little bit tall (but that improves the head room dramaticly) and its traction in snow isn't the best (but hey, it's not a truck)

This Car RULES! I love it, and i only have the 300 i would recomend this car to ANYONE, it has an AMAZING value, for the same price you get a 2.3 liter benz with less that 170 HP and no interior space. The Lexus RULES i love it, if you see it you will to. Lexus service is amazing, after any tune up, you would think it is BRAND NEW!

BMW 5-series - This car is what i would buy if there were no lexus, a more expensive less sporty car. Most people probobly buy it for the name
M-Benz C-230 or E-320 Either way you look at it these cars are only for their name. Hard leather, ugly looks, no space, no power, and an amazingly high price, this is definatly not the car to buy.

Weakness:

front seats designed for heavier people, xenon headlights unavailable in GS-300 level in 1998 without special ordering, vibration problem at highway speeds.

Lexus service treatment was exemplary. Unfortunately this car was a lemon. It vibrated at speeds above 40 mph and Lexus could not solve the problem. Eventually Lexus bought the car back and I purchased the BMW. I may the only person in history to have bought a Lexus lemon. However, I understand the vibration problem was common in the 1998 model year. Perhaps the new ones have worked that problem out.

Strength:

Overall perfection. Drives superbly, is quiet and handles perfectly. The finest car I have ever owned. Great attention to detail. Selected it because of it's sporty handling, Lexus' reliability, and appearance. Bought cloth interior which is superb.

Weakness:

Rear seatbelts tighten up on passengers, because of it's design for baby seats. Eaily dmaged bumpers.

Just a perfect automobile that rides well, handles beautifully, and is ultra reliable. Service from my Lexus dealer in Carlsbad is superb. Servie cost is very reasonable and they go out of their way to pleae, even filling my gas tank on one occasion when I suffered a minor inconvenience. i usually want to bring it in when I need a car wash, they do it so well.

Strength:

This has got to be one of the best cars out there. So quiet that you can't even tell it's running. The standard sound system is absolutely earth shattering, reception is crystal-clear and cd's sound wonderful. And the acceleration is amazing, either from a dead stop or changing lanes.

Weakness:

Nothing whatsoever.

Beyond Lexus' reputation for customer satisfaction, they will go out of their way to help you. Unlike both BMW and Mercedes who act as if you should be lucky just to be in the showroom, which is why Lexus now outsells them both, you aren't coerced to buy a car on the lot just to save them the time of ordering the exact vehicle and delaying their commision, which Mercedes and BMW both did. Great resale, fantastic styling, and incredible performance, what more could you want in a sporty luxury sedan ?

Similar Products Used:

Drove both BMW 3 series and Mercedes C-class, as they are all priced around the same-- Lexus is quieter, interior blows them both away, the leather on the other 2 feels and smells awful, not what you'd expect when spending $40,000 +.

Strength:

Reliability. Comfort. Interior fit and finish. I'm sorry, only a Rolls has better rear seats. Nakamichi sound system is beautifully balanced. Does not look dated (yet). Exterior paint like new. Rear wheel drive. Image.

Weakness:

Under-powered. Gas guzzler around town (50% better mileage on the highway). Bad snow car. Nothing else.

Normally I would not provide a review. But, this car has been so unbelievably reliable that I thought it might benefit those who are looking at buying a quality used car. For $15-$20K this used car is an absolute steal compared to others that can be purchased for the same price. The under-powered issue is a benefit to those who don't care much about performance because it keeps the price down. I hear so many horror stories about breakdowns, impossible to diagnose problems, etc. from friends and acquaintances. I feel like I am living in a vacuum in that this car was so well put together. I know some day it will fall apart - it is just a machine. But until then I can drive stress free and in absolute comfort. As a side benefit, I am treated differently for driving this car. Business associates, friends, valets all appreciate the quality of the car when they ride in it. They cannot believe it is eight years old. As well, the dealer treats me (and particularly my wife) like royalty. We have been in for service only (no repairs), but we still get brand new courtesy cars and Godiva chocolates. You could eat off of the service bay floor.

Similar Products Used:

Nothing similar. Saab 9000 - rattled a lot, always felt like it was going to break. Honda Accord - quality car, but much noisier. Very uncomfortable seats. MR2 Turbo - fantastic car but not at all similar.

Good looking and great ride.

Weakness:

Very POOR Transmission

This is my second GS 300 (1st 1998) and is the first time I have ever purchased the same car back to back. I trade every 24-36 months my car and my wifes car. I went to the 2001 model because I was told the transmission problems had been corrected. NOT TRUE ! Infact the 2001 model is WORSE. Not only is it slow to down shift it will hang up on the up shift (between 2nd and 3rd gears) then slam into gear. What really makes this unbearable is the fact that it doesn't do it all the time and the service dept has dificulty with intermitten problems of such. What a disappointment.
