Chrysler 300M Luxury

Chrysler 300M Luxury

DESCRIPTION

Chrysler launched the completely new, sport-oriented 300M in 1999. The 300M used the same front-drive chassis as the Concorde/Intrepid, but had distinct styling and a shorter body. Power was supplied by a 3.5L 253-horsepower V6 engine and 4-speed automatic transmission, though the 300M was fitted with Chrysler's AutoStick automatic, which permits manually-selected gear changes using a separate shift gate. The 300M distinguished itself with 17-inch wheels and a sport-tuned suspension and steering settings. The Performance Handling option gave the 300M more aggressive 16-inch rubber. The 300M is a 5-passenger sedan with leather upholstery and heated front seats standard.

Strength:

General comfort & power. Cool appearance. Front wheel drive for Minnesota snow driving.

Weakness:

Looks too much like the LHS/Intrepid. Automatic temperature control program is not right. Air conditioner does not move enough air during operation on auto setting. Need passenger seat memory.

I drive a least 50,000 miles per year for business. Buying a good 1 year old used car saves me a bundle in depreciation costs. This 300M has all of the options and is a retired Budget Rent car. I love this car. Just the right size, cool looks, very comfortable, great stereo, enough power (can never have too much), decent mileage and great handling. I have over 10,000 miles on it in just the last 2 months. No propblems. This will be the 3rd Chrysler product I have owned. The previous vehicles (82'' 5th Ave, 87'' LeBaron, 98''Sebring Convert.) lasted over 250,000 miles each. My last GM (94'' Oldsmobile Cutlass Convt.) was traded in after 56,000 miles. I got disgusted with replacing 5 fuel pressure regulators and 3 fuel pumps, courtesy lights not turning off automatically, door locks failing and costing 2 new batteries. I have come back to Chrysler. I also test drove a Mercedes C280 (nice but not special enough for price difference, RWD), BMW 5XX (handled poor, lack of comfort, RWD),Lincoln LS (no power, RWD) and decided on the 300M instead.

Strength:

It''''s cheap cheap cheap for a 250 hp car. Beats the Lincoln LS for value. It''''s very reliable. And it looks good.

Weakness:

Because is''''t so cheap, there''''s more of them than PT Cruisers on the road. You want a unique looking car? Steal the 300N concept. Shares too many visual similarities with the Intrepid.

Took Delivery of my non-PHP 300M in Nov 1999. It now has 25k miles (41k km) after 2.5 years of (mostly) city driving. I opted not to get the sun roof. But I do have the 11 speaker, 4 cd player (which was standard on Canadian 300M''''s). I have had zero problems with this car. No problems with windows. Some minor (trivial) problems: Worst was a creaking or groaning sound when letting up on the brakes during a stop. This was solved with a new set of brake pads. I put a bra on it, and several times during the last couple of winters, during highway driving in heavy snow, an ice build-up on the front of the car cause the outside temperature sensor to go screwy, and even the internal air was blowing cold (!?). I have the occasional problem with a slow leak in one of the tires (Goodyear Eagle LS). The leak is around the rim. Maybe it''''s the tires, but I think the car is too over-powered for a front wheel drive (at least from a standing start). I would love for this to be a RWD. On the highway, it doesn''''t take long to go from 60 to 90 mph (and the engine isin''''t even straining). Highway MPH is a reliable 28 mpg. I may have started with mid grade gas (89), with the occasional tank of 93, but for the last 1.5 years I''''ve been running regular (87 octane). I may change the tires to the Michilen Pilots this summer. Besides wishing the 300M was a RWD, it would be nice to operate the windows and radio without having to put the key in the ignition. The single biggest improvement they can make to the interior is air-conditioned seats (we can only hope with the 300N, right?). I have tried the autostick maybe 5 times. Coming from a background of 3-speed-auto V8 Mopar''''s from the 60''''s and 70''''s, I just can''''t be bothered to change gears manually. The future evolution of the 300M will be, I think, limited by Daimler. (just look at how the 300N concept disapeared. No more talk of a V8 RWD convertable 300N. Instead we have trivial power and trim improvements). This is sad. I see far more 300M''''s on the road around here than PT Cruisers (but the PT is entry-level priced!) There is almost no difference between a 300M and a Concorde or Sebring these days. Future 300''''s must be V8 RWD and cost 5k or 10k more if it''''s going to be the Chrysler flagship car. The 300M is too common now. Chrysler needs an E class car...

Strength:

Plenty of interior room, including the trunk area. The envelop-type netting in the trunk is extremely handy. The ''light'' sensor that prevents the lights from staying on when the vehicle is not in use is a wonderful feature. Good braking, good handling on mountain roads. Prepare to tell strangers the name of the paint color if you buy a ''purple'' model. I say it''s "amethyst", *hehehe* GREAT DEALERSHIP - LIBERTY MOTORS in Grass Valley, CA!!

Weakness:

Window motors are unstable and need replacing often. Water enters the driver''s area from the windsheild; no remedy available. Not enough sound-proofing to prevent road noise in the cab. SHAKING - VIBRATING!! It will cease to be a problem when the torque converter fails. Mine failed, and was replaced; no more vibration!

The first year for any vehicle usually brings some headaches. None of them were bad, just a bit annoying. Overall, the car is very stylish, extremely roomy, yet has a sporty apperance from the outside. "Pride in ownership" is abundant!

Exterior: Styling is still eye pleasing. I recommend the chrome wheel. It just looked so much fancier than the stock wheel. Interior: In the near luxury class, you can not find another car with bigger interior and rear leg room for your passenger. I also recommend the luxury package which appears to be much more upscale with the real walnut woodtrim on the dash and the steering wheel. The EVAC system that comes with the package gives you many programmable functions. They are more toys for practical purpose. But it is nice to have it. The dash looks very handsome at night with its soft greenish light. Stereo sound great and the climate control is easy to use. Stereo controls on the wheel spoils me quickly. It is a convenience I don''t want to give up any more. Performance: always a pleasure to talk about it. You get used to the power very quickly. the transmission is eager to down shift to accommadate. Brake is strong and has a good feel, void of some other chrysler cars'' sponge feel. Steering is precise and tight. It feels just right, not too light not too heavy.

Weakness:

The only complaint I have is the road noise. After a couple long trips, it starts to get to me. I wish Chrysler''s engineer would respond to this problem. I also purchased a third party extended warranty, fearing that the Chrysler quality will give me problem in the future. I do plan to keep this car for more than 5 years.

I bought the car in Dec 2000. Now after 1 year and 17,000 miles, I still love it. I did much research and comparison. This is a true value package for the money. An excellent choice for a combination of performance, comfort and style.

Strength:

By far...styling inside and out. I lost track of the compliments that I received for the car''s looks...even still today. And, last year when I changed insurance companies, the person did not believe that the 17" chrome wheels were stock!---they were too nice looking! The car is an extreme thrill to drive...and you will be amazed at the size of the interior. I thought the AutoStick feature would be a joke, but now I almost use it exclusively. I can keep the engine in higher RPMs in traffic situations, which makes the car extremely responsive and quick. If left in automatic mode only, the car would have to constantly upshift/downshift and would feel more sluggish. Highly recommend the AutoStick (research about the several other vehicles that offer similar option now: Lexus, Audi, Acura readily come to mind). You won''t be overly impressed with 0-60 mph data...several other cars are similar. But, 15-60 mph or 30-80 mph performance, for which you won''t find data, this car is extremely strong and thrilling...at a much larger size. May be trivial, but the large trunk pass-thru has been a great feature. Other vehicles may offer pass-thru, but usually at a much smaller size.

Weakness:

Several, several problems. I want to blame this on the ''first model year'' sickness all carmakers experience. All window motors went bad...the windows were tuned too fast and thus burned out, dedpending on how often you used them. I got in the habit of ''testing'' all my windows every time I got in the car...so thay all failed within 20k miles (< 1yr). New, slower regulators fixed the problem. Tranny sensor went out twice...forces the tranny to stay in second gear. I believe they had a wire that kept fatiguing, so I believe that problem has been fixed. Several other small electrical problems: auto-down on window switch, autodim mirror, ambient sensor for AC, auto headlight switch, electric cooling fan. Just gets annoying. STRONG RECOMMENDATION: get an aftermarket warranty. Since I was scared of Chrysler''s reliabiliy, and since 1999 was first model year, I purchased a third party (i.e., not Chrysler) warranty with no deductible and covers rental car. If it were not for this extended warranty, I would be singing a different tune! Also, be informed. Know about TSBs (go to NHTSA for more info). Most of the grypes that I saw in other reviews about problems could have be

I have had this car since it first came out. Just shy of 60k miles, fully loaded. I absolutely loved the car, and still do. But, I have had too many problems with the car to give it a perfect score. I had to upgrade from a small sporty car to a sporty 4 door. In 1999, there was not much to desire for sporty 4 doors. However, for 2002, there are. I think this car will still look trendy for another 3-4 years....can''t say that about too many other 1999 models.

Strength:

Style, Power,Handling, and soundsystem.

Weakness:

Automatic window at the drivers side does not function anymore. Persistent pulling to the left after 6 visits to two different dealers. They are falsely telling me it is the tires.... Hummm after two sets of replacements! They are putting me on I believe.

Overall this is, or could be a fine automobile. The engine and interior are very pleasing. The thing that gets me though is the persistant pulling to the left, and the excessive road noise. The handling is exceptional as well as the sound system. I really want to like this car but am forced to buy an import next. This is due to the habitual efforts of US American auto workers production of sub import standard quality vehicles. I called Chrysler about the problems and they seem to want to make it right but when it comes down to it... no follow through. This saddens me for our auto market. Hopefully the Deutschers will force the American workers at Daimler Chrysler in Detroit to do what they are very well paid for. Thanks UAW!

Gorgeous paint (inferno red) - flawless. Many compliments. Altogether, as others have noted, the car is such a deal! I can only speak for an ''01 model driven 17K miles, but for me it was a no-problem car. It has only been two weeks since the wreck and I have looked at and driven serveral vehicles and my decision is down to the new GMC Envoy or another inferno 300M.

Weakness:

Typical of the LH series, road/tire noise on some surfaces; visability to the rear is exciting - I backed into a golf cart.

That really is what I paid: lux pkg, roof, changer, chrome wheels...evidently Nov of 00 was the time to be buying. Drove it 17K miles and wrecked it (reading a map instead of looking) - rolled it once and walked away. Anyhow, in 17K miles of driving the only thing that went wrong was flickering dash lights. Best car I ever owned in that respect, and also, in my opinion, in fit and finish.

17-inch chrome wheels. Stylish interior design. Value. Auto-stick is alot of fun to drive. Four disc-in-dash CD changer.

Weakness:

Needs a subwoofer to compliment the Infinity speakers. Gas mileage. Road noise is a little high. Leather on top of steering wheel melts. Strange clicking noises from passenger side window. Fake wood trim.

Really good car. Very happy with my purchase. Excellent power. Tight steering control. Nice look. Had the windows tinted, looks even better. Great car for the money.
