Strength:

Great power, excellent gas mileage for a v8. The car turns heads everywhere you go.

Weakness:

The Northstar engine has problems. Oil pan leaks due to insufficent sealant used when assembled at the factory. The head bolts strip out the aluminum engine block. Caddy dealer claims this is a common problem with these engines. He recommended a complete engine rebuild for $ 5000. Buyers beware Cadillac's are costly. best move I ever mady was to cut my losses and buy a Infiniti

I always wanted to get the Cadillac with the Northstar engine out of my system. I drove the car for a little over two years and loved every minute of it. It took off like a rocket and handled well. The only problem is with reliability. And thats a big problem when you depend on a car for transportation. When a sticker price on a car is over $45,000 dollars you expect it to last over 60,000 miles. To have major problems caused by manufactures defects and engineering flaws is unacceptable. To add insult to injury the people at Cadillac never issued a recall on the known problems. This car was serviced by a Cadillac from day one. All scheduled maintenance done by Cadillac. I finally traded this car for a Infinti at least they stand behind what they sell.

Strength:

Beefy Northstar, Smooth Ride, Integrity, Center Console Shift, Nice Options, Reliable, Power Stays on (for ten minutes) When Engine Is Off

Weakness:

Cheap molding, slow windows, but hey....the thing's six years old and it treats me well!

My Cadillac is the most uniqe car among all my peers...I'm only a college freshman...had it since I was 16, and most people with a solid income and family WISH they had a car that performs like mine. I'm very lucky to have my baby and wouldn't trade it for the world...living near Cleveland..it's comforting to know the traction control works well and the heated seats roast the driver in snowy weather. 300hp ain't bad either..from what I understand, 1994 was a great year for the ETC...I'd recommend it to people of all ages. (I'd get a 2001 model because they're gonna be gone forever!)

Strength:

I've got a dark blue eldorado, with a tan simulated convertible tan top, with a beautiful tan interior. You would not believe how many accidents I have caused from people looking at this car! It is such a beautiful car, I paid $72,000 cdn for it (about $50,000) and it is amazing. The ride is good (with super expensive tires) and the acceleration is awesome considering it weighs 3700 lbs. The sound is music for the ears.

Weakness:

The stereo (only good for classical music, no hard bass grooves)
The doors they rattle when you close them
The window seal leaked water until it was fixed

I would reccommend this car to anyone who wants to
be different from a mercedes or bmw driver. I have
been told by many many people that this is the most
beautiful car they have ever seen. It's so classy and
exotic. What I don't appreciate is that cadillac does
not put tan interiors in the eldorados anymore. That
totally ruins them. There is a new red one at my local
dealer with a grey interior that isn't selling. (wonder why,
read and grey, what were they thinking?) I reccommend for
anyone who likes this car to get a black interior with a
black exterior or grey exterior and vice versa. This car's
beefy looks stack up to such cars as aston martins. I
really reccommend it!

Strength:

The vehicle is luxury in and out, the quietness of road noise is almost unbelievable. The northstar engine and the electronic intergrated transmission is what makes the vehicle so great. Fit and trim is better than I expected. I will have to admit its got style, and with its full compliment of electronics that makes this vehicle a great buy.

Weakness:

I can't think of one at the present time.

I recomend this vehicle on the strength of style, an ride comfort for the people who want a personal luxury vehicle. I don't know where these people say that this vehicle has high wind noise, I don't hear it.

Strength:

Unbelievably luxurious with leather and wood trim.
Fantastic acceleration for passing.
Boese sound sytem is a must and gives superb sound.
Onstar sytem with intergrated phone is a great convenience.

Weakness:

Poorly sealed/weatherstripped doors and car design make for
excessive road/wind noise above 50MPH

You either love it or hate it. I love it despite the noisyness on the highway. I look forward to my commutes to the office surrounded in luxury, leather, wood, and by a sound system rivaling any home system. The rocket Northstar engine will get you where you want to go in a hurry. A sunroof is
an excellent option if you do not want to pay for the $75,000
custom convertible. I paid $29,500 in 12/99 for a 1998 Eldo
with all the options including upgraded stereo, leather, heated seats, sunroof with imitation convertible roof, luggage rack and s/s rocker panels. Fun car! Best for one who
enjoys luxury, stereos, and speed in a package sized best for
a couple with the occassional two passngers. Sporty enough to
please the younger buyer, luxurious to please anyone.

Strength:

Great looker and nice ride.

Weakness:

Major engine repair in the future! Not cheap. Will cost at least 3,000 dollars

The car looks great and had many comments on it. It is Polo green with the chrome option. It drove great and had a lot of power. Very comfortable to ride in. I would have recommended this car to anyone until what I just found out recently. There is a major design flaw with the motor. My car only has 67,000 miles on it and I have to pay over 3,000 dollars to repair a blown head gasket. The cause for the blown head gasket is, the head bolts pulled out of the block. I was told by the Cadillac mechanic that this is common for the Northstar motor. He said it usual doesn't happen till 100,000 miles though. The reason the bolts pull out of the block is because the head bolts are thread directly into the aluminum block. The aluminum can't handle the pulling force of the bolts. Cadillac repairs the problem by drilling out the old threads and inserting steel sleeves into the holes which are threaded for the head bolts. Cadillac will not repair it! I tried to get help from them but they don't care. Please take note and beware of all Northstar motors.

Strength:

Service within the warranty period, power and drive. Excellent comfortable ride and very quiet. Unique coupe that looks and drives like a modern Cadillac. A beauty in almost any color, ours was Polo green.

Weakness:

High cost of what would be ordinary repairs in almost any other type of car. The lighter leather interior is comfortable but gets dirty too easily. Doors do rattle too much when slammed closed.

Bought this particular car for my wife and CarMax located one with the color and equipment as I requested for a very decent price. Eldorados were the only car she had driven for years. This one ran perfect and looked great until the 50,000 mile warranty ran out. The Northstar engine leaked about a quart of oil a month - cost of repair about $3000. The transmission had been giving us problems for awhile and then gave up everything except first gear - cost of repair another $3000. Car did become a little sloppy on turns - cost of repair (4 new struts) about $2900 ! True, each strut discounted price is about $450. As I said before, this was one awesome car that drove great and drew many positive comments on looks and being a unique car but get things repaired before the warranty runs out. Finally traded it in on a new Chrysler 300M which my wife had to get used to. Of course, it's not a Cadillac.

Model Reviewed: El Dorado ETC

Strength:

Good looks, safe, splendid luxury interior, well equiped, powerful, smooth riding - the kind of car that makes your friends and neighbors envious- and makes you proud to own and drive it.

Weakness:

Poor quality control on the more expensive equipment items. The El Dorado product manager should be very unhappy with the manufacturing manager over this. Both probably should be fired for ruining the credability of a great car.

Great car to drive as it is luxurious, powerful, smooth, well-equiped, and good looking. However, many very expensive repairs and shop time make me wonder if its worth it. The extreme positive and negative reports on this model sound like a crap shoot for the general public, which does not speak well for overall quality control during the manufacturing process. I bought the car 3 years ago at 51,000 miles and now have 68,400 miles on it. Equipment replacements include: brake module, wireing harness, tie-rod end, driver's side window seal, sway bar links, A/C compressor and accumulator, and fuel regulator. Most of these are "heavy-hitters". If quality had been better for this model, perhaps Cadillac wouldn't be discontinuing the line in 2003 because of poor sales.

Similar Products Used:

1989 El Dorado Beritz. Same problems as 1995 ETC. I thought my 1989 was one of the occasional "lemons" that come along. It wasn't. Both models are characteristic of the terrible virus that has tainted the quality system of the El Dorado line for too many years. This didn't have to happen if there had been a stronger management that listened to its customers' very common complaints over the years. Except for this, we'd still have this wonderful car still rolling off the lines years from now.
