Strength:

Absolutely a gorgeous car w/ Diamond White outside, Oatmeal interior and White Wall Vogues outside. Being a neat-freak...this is one eye-stopper, but it looks like a poor class of a Monte Carlo. Best qualities....very, very few for such an expensive car. I like my '90 Seville better.

Weakness:

Drivers side window won't roll up after expressed down (No one knows why except that is an Eldorado trait), front ashtray...oh please, junk leather, very cheaply made for the interior, etc., etc., etc.

Very cheaply made, "Tercel" cut-out door handles, leather is already stretching on the seats, BOSE stereo..forget the base, uncomfortable for a 6'00" foot person....can I go on?

Similar Products Used:

1990 Seville & 1982 Buick Rivera. Both of these cars are much superior.

Hey ...It’s a Caddy, but seriously folks. Prestige nameplate, an American icon, comes with lots of gizmos that came out years prier to being options any other detroit iron. Copious amounts of automotive power everything,
power: doors, steering, antenna, seats, mirrors, trunk, windows, locks, brakes, carpets, hub caps, paint. You get the idea. pillowy soft Caddy ride. Feeling of invulnerability encased in 4000 lbs of steel.

Weakness:

Hey ...It’s a Caddy, Lack luster mid 80’s styling, degrading mid 80’s downsizing. Better than the HT4100, but still mediocre 4.5 liter aluminum block bored out clone of the 4100 engine. Remember the 472cid iron block & heads with the Carter 4bbl. (7.8 liters for those of you who live by the metric system). Now that was an engine!! Underpowered for a car of this size and price. Lots of gizmos that go bad after a couple of years, power: doors, steering, antenna, seats, mirrors, trunk, windows, locks, brakes, carpets, hub caps, paint. You get the idea. Invested over $8000 in repairs over 5 years. Poor reliability (ya think?), atrocious gas mileage, (Like I actually thought I bought the thing because it got good gas mileage), worse resale value. Factoid: Although a little more than half the price of a Sedan Deville, when both new, a well equipped Toyota Camry XLE V6 after 4 years will have the same resale value as the Caddy, ie: new: 1996 Sedan Deville-$39,000+- 1996 Camry XLE V6-$22000+- In 2001 they are both worth approx. $13,000. Hurts don’t it?
A word of advice, Cadillacs are great when new with a bumper to bumper warrantee, however, be prepared to pay dearly once that precious piece of paper has expired. But seriously folks.....

Although not as much a standout in the status area as it was lets say 25+ years ago, before BMW really caught on and Lexus and Acura hit the seen back in the late 80’s, Cadillac still has a faithful following, mostly with the 50-70 age group.
Still, there’s just something about a Caddy. In my mind Cadillac has never translated into performance or 4 wheeling, although they were a force on the racing circuit back in the stone age, and they now have a re-badged Chevy Yukon, oops, I mean Escalade. Cadillac is about being able to cruise across country, (in a straight line), in all the lavish comfort of a well appointed living room, sans TV., oops they have that now too. Cadillac, believe it or not was and probably still is a technological innovator.
First electric starter. First use of air bags back in the early-mid 70’s. First wide scale use of front-wheel drive back in the mid 60’s. First use of fiber optics in the 80’s. Had the high mounted brake light on Eldorado more than 15 years before it was mandated back in 1986..... These are just a few things I recall, there’s a lot of stuff there.
Sorry, I was wandering.

Strength:

I liked everything about the car except that it only had 4 speakers. But the BOSE radio cass./CD Changer made up for it. (This is better than my home stero) It has thundering bass excellent midranges and super clear highs. Seat warmers, exellent, adjustable lumbar support (great for long trips) but best of all it probally has the BIGGEST sunroof known to man. And the coolant gauge will never move past the middle mark, even climbing a hill in the summer with the a/c on. I have even let it idle for an hour in the summer heat, and it never moves past the middle mark, VERY impressive. It is the best you can buy for the money.

Weakness:

Not many, only ones are little things like the all-familiar rear seat, with a coupe and the foglights don't help much. That is pretty much it.

In '98 When I was looking for a car I knew what I wanted, a Cadillac. So I went over to the Cadillac Dealer to take a look around. Before I got out of my car I was greeted with a handshake and a warm smile. I was invited in to the showroom. As soon as I walked in I sa it. It was a 1997 ETC, White Diamond with tan interior, Navy Blue Canvas top. By the next 10 mins. I was peeling out of the parking lot. WOW WHAT A CAR!! When I came back the salesman said, Did you like it? Of course I said yes. I was then explained what I could get, A heck of a lot of car for the money! I have had previous Cadillacs but this was all the better. It had 10k miles on it, I was explained that I would get a 6 year/70,000 mile Bumper to bumper warranty. So I signed everything and drove away the same day with a big smile and a new gold ownership medalion asying X-- representing my 10th Cadillac.

Strength:

Power, style, comfort.

Weakness:

Complete loss of steering while in motion, restictive head space and a small back seat.

First impression was that it was a most eye pleasing, powerful, comfortable vehicle. The 300 horsepower Northstar engine really was impressive when passing on the highway. I often used the On-Star system to held find my way and it was comforting to know a human was only a button push away.

If you are over 6 foot 3 inches you might find there is not enough head room. The back seat is pretty much wasted space. I found that the tolerance on external body part alignment could have been better.

Alas, after it spontaneously lost its steering 3 months into ownership I have rarely driven it for fear of a reoccurance. Two GM service managers have indicated that the coupling that ties the steering column into the rack completely disengaged. They believe it occured due to an error in assempbly. If you have an Eldorado, you may want to have the dealer check that the steering is in place with sufficient torque.

Strength:

Looks nice (when drained of all fluids sitting in the driveway without a battery)

Weakness:

The engineering. Unreliable. Most of the fancy "features" are Dilbert (tm) fixes to poorly engineered equipment.

Looks nice. The most poorly engineered vehicle I have ever owned. More problems than all my other cars put together. Incompetent dealers. Incompetent mechanics. Eats engines. For complete details see http://www.members.home.net/gtrose/
Northstar engines have an electrolysis problem that erodes the aluminum head bolt threads in the block. The bolts will pull out and the whole engine needs to be pulled. Special sleeves need to be installed to correct the problem.
Cadillac will write you off so be prepared to pay through every orifice. Hertz, (tm) who rents Cadillacs will immediately check oil levels on any returned Cadillac. To my knowledge the Cadillacs are the only vehicles needing this degree of paranoia in their entire fleet.
