Strength:

Outstanding reliability and roominess. Car has 190,000 miles and has never given any trouble except for alternator, and one cv joint. Interior is extremely luxurious with genuine walnut trim. My model is a Fleetwood sixty special with every concievable feature. Car is narrow but has impressive leg room. In its earlier day's it gave 30mpg on freeway verified by fuel computer and a manual check. Has slipped as of late. Car is easy to drive. Power is not up to the Northstar but is more than adequate and punchy around town. Everyone likes to borrow it for a long trips. Parts and maintenance have been very inexpensive. Water pump $200 installed. CV joint the same. Airconditioning relay switch was $13.00 and I installed in 2 minutes. Front wheel drive and antilock brakes are exceptional in the snow. Few electrical problems given level of equipment

Weakness:

Spark plug changes are not for the do it you selfer. The rear bank of plugs are impossible. Road noise much more prominent than in my 1982 Crown Victoria. A common complaint in front drive unibody chassis I'm told. Can't keep break pads on front. Breaks are a little undersized according to my mechanic; 20,000 miles tops. Fortunately the repair is cheap; $125.00.

This series of Deville/Fleetwood, 1989-1993 is an excellent car and very reliable which makes it an excellent choice for those who are looking for luxury on a budget. Models are cheap and plentiful. Mine had 80,000 miles when I bought it in 1994 and has provided exceptional service. The 4.9 liter engine was slightly more troublesome than the 4.5 liter which ended in 1990. Excellent car for those needing room and who want a little style comfort and luxury. I selected the car based on Consumer Reports reccomended used car list back in 1994. It was the only full sized American car on the list and it has behaved exactly as they predicted.

For ride smoothness and quietness it doesn't compare to full size Ford products with full frame construction and rear wheel drive. Reliability is superb however.

Strength:

Lots of power, cavern-like interior and trunk, slab bumpers stand up well to minor impacts, much better overall vehicle than a small car.

Weakness:

Lack of cupholder, requires 91-octane gas, terrible rear visibility, repairs (although there won't be many) cost a lot.

This is an excellent car.

The 1990 model had a 4.5-liter engine; bigger than the older 4.3 liter motors but not quite as nice as the later 4.9's. Still, it offers plenty of performance to get the job done. While not the fastest car on the road (far from it), the Caddy will still surprise a lot of people with its abilities.

The motor is a little quirky about fuel economy. If takes a certain knack to really get good mileage out of this vehicle. Most people who drive my car get around 16-18 MPG. However, I always get at least 20 MPG and on the highway, usually more like 25. I've had as much as 27 MPG on long flat roads. Optimum fuel economy is achieved at about 55-60 MPH. Mileage is very important with this car, since it requires the expensive 91-octane gas.

Driving the old Caddy is quite fun. The suspension is soft enough that if you gas it from a stop, the car rears up pretty far, and the engine gives off a pleasing growl then gassed a lot. Plus, like any Cadillac, it has plenty of useless gizmos to wow your friends with--such as vanity mirror dimmer switches, rear glove box, fuel mileage computer, THREE cigarette lighters, and little indicator lights for your headlights and taillights (these are actually quite useful).

Interior space is shocking--the inside of the car seems large enough to have THREE rows of seats; it's almost cave-like. The backseat is more like a couch than something you'd expect in a car, and the backseat has more legroom than most car's FRONT seats. Needless to say, there's plenty of room--both in front AND back--to make even an NBA player happy. By comparison, the inside of something like a Ford Taurus feels like a sardine can. After getting used to the Cadillac, A Sunfire seems like no more than a glorified Go-Kart.

One downside, especially for those unsure of their driving ability, is this car's almost complete lack of rear visibility. The rear window is all of about 4 ihches high, and making things worse is the wide rear roof supports; small objects behind the car (like a Geo Metro) are nearly impossible to see. Backing requires both lots of skill AND lots of luck. Something common to these older Cadillacs--understandibly--is a somewhat banged-up tail. Fortunately the rear bumper is a massive steel slab.

One thing I'll say about my Cadillac, is it NEVER let me down. And I haven't been nice to it. I've driven it through door-deep snowdrifts, I've driven through beyond-knee-deep standing water (was funny to see the stuck Explorer and CRV), it is solid and sure in any sort of wind or rain. This car inspires confidence in its driver (as long as you're moving foreward).

If you're in the used-car market and have somewhere between 5 and 10 thousand bucks to spend, definately look at an early-'90's Cadillac. Usually you can find one with sufficiently low mileage (I got mine with 41K), and for the money they are an incredible value! Don't just dismiss it because of it's "granny-car" image; it's a vastly better machine than most comparibly-priced vehicles.

Buy a Cadillac and never look back!

Very roomy inside. Lots of room and very comfortable. Climate control is nice. Leather is nice. Nice 18+ gallon gas tank. Its a Cady. Very smooth ride, dont feel many bumps ont he road. Handles great. Sticks to road. Have only slide once in snow and it was much.

Weakness:

No CUPHOLDERS!!! Engine has 176,600 miles on it. Still runs good though. Cant use air conditioner! with leather, not good in summer. But can use heater. Poor gas mileage, about 15-20 per gallon.

I love my Cady and never want to get rid of it but I want a new car that gets more power, is faster, and gets much better gas mileage, especially with the increase in gas prices. Another good thing about this car is that the engines in the years around this car sucked. The bearings would go out and the engines didn't last long. This baby has 176,000 miles on it and still runs great. Hope it stays that way. In the past year and a few months, the only problems I have had are i needed a new starter and bought a rebuilt one for $150 and my right front brake caliber would not go back in to put brakes on. Dad tried everything and he didn't want to buy a new one. So he put it in a vice and problem solved. It works fine again. Engine does sound different though cause of the bearings but it still runs fine. Goes through oil fast but that was fixed with some tightening of some bolts. Overall I love my Cady and so do all of my friends.

This car is huge, I loved it. Extremely comfortable, rides like a boat! I will run over anything with that beast. The body falls apart before the dam engine does! I always get the women with this boat. Fits 12 of my closest friends, great to smoke in! True pimp-mobile. I would suggest it to anyone!! This is one bad boy, it's got a 405 under the hood, you dont' see that too often now a days. Awesome first car! Great for college and HS students!

Weakness:

Eats a lot of gas, but that's the price you pay to drive a Caddy. Have only had minor problems with it. Outside falls apart before engine. It's hard to pick up girls in any car this old!

The caddy is the shizzzzn*t! I loved it, great experience.

Large, smooth, powerful

Weakness:

Poor quality conrol, poor reliability, poor design considering the cost

For the cost of these cars the quality should be better. It has had repeated mechanical failures and suffers from leaks and rattles. Its fuel pump failure left us by the side of the road (had 50,000 at the time). I can't think of a worse critism of a car than that. At the shop they told me that they do lots of fuel pump jobs. Earlier this year when the air conditioning compressor pulley failed while we were in South Carolina we noticed two other Cadillacs in the shop for fuel pump problems. Frankly I gave my Park Avenue to my son when I "stepped up" to the Caddy and it was a big mistake.
Cadillac is just going on their reputation. I won't buy another.

Too Long to list. Eats more gas than Oprah and Rosanne combined. Fit and Finish is poor to to say the least. Horribly unreliable. Head gasket blew at around 30000 miles. Needed new starter at around 38000 miles.(just to name a few)

This car is all smoke and no fire. I wonder what kind of fools actually pay 40+ grand on a junk like this.

Strength:

A little smaller but tighter than my 1997 Cadillac Concours. Elegant, quiet as a mouse, beautiful white diamond paint turns heads, lots of ROOM inside, computers up the wazoo. Stabilitrac keeps skids down through magic (If Newton had had one of these he might have postulated a fourth law of motion.) Free Onstar for a year and a cell phone too! The perfect car?????? Perhaps. No bull. One feature I really like is the radio. First, the sound is as good as a high end home system. It is easier to tune than previous incarnations. I haven't learned how to use the fancy computer Radio Data System stuff yet, but it has the potential to be a handy feature once more FM stations start using the RDS signal. But the crowning touch is a built in weather band receiver. That's right, you can tune in the National Weather Service broadcast to see if it is going to rain today. Car manufacturers should have done this years ago. The base Deville and DHS models use "flex seating" which is very nice, giving the benefits of a center console without the confining aspects. Lots of storage in the TWO center compartments. The Cadillac warranty covers everything, including tires. It lasts for 50 K miles too. The Northstar engine doesn't need a tune up for 100,000 miles, and can run up to 50 mph without any coolant by converting itself to a four cylinder air cooled engine. No kidding. The car weights 4,000 pounds, making it a better match for SUV's in a collision. Yet, you can get 26 mpg on the highway. This car uses regular gas.

Weakness:

I haven't found any yet, unless you object to having to pay the money to get this sort of ride. Still, whem compared to crap like Lincoln you come out ahead. No comparison! This car compares favorably to the much more expensive Lexus and European products too. One other thing .... I wish Cadillac had included high intensity discharge (HID) headlight technology in their stuff. I think we'll eventually see them on the Deville just like they are now on the Seville. Although I love the radio I have a suggestion that could be implemented at little extra cost. This one has a weather band receiver which is great. Why not include broadcast TV audio too? It would be great to be able to listen to the six o'clock news. Finally, don't count on using the center front seating for an adult over a hundred pounds. Not much room there. It works nicely as the pseudo console though -- better than the DTS model with a real console in my opinion. The warranty will eventually run out and then your repair bills will be high due to the sophistical technology on this car. Get an extended GM warranty before it does and you'll be covered.

Cadillac used to be "the standard of the world". But, unfortunately, during the seventies and eighties the brand went down hill. In the nineties it started to come back. The previous 1997 - 1999 models were excellent cars. Starting with 2000 and now 2001 we are once again reaching the level of the Standard of the World.

1997 Deville Councours. Not as powerful (275 hp vs 300 hp). You would think those 25 horses wouldn't make a difference. Well, they do. We are talking about having to wait 8 seconds for 0 - 60 in the 2001 Deville DHS vs six and a half in the 1997 Deville Councours. It is a different vehicle philosophy......Still, the 2001 DHS is almost as tight on the road as the earlier Concours. No land yacht here.

Well worth the money - this car has everything you could ask for in a car-safety, power, comfort, styling, elegance. There's nothing like the feeling of first-class comfort when you're driving to work or down the interstate. I thought about buying a new 2000 Deville but they depreciate too fast, so I purchased a beautiful 99 Deville and saved 15k over a new one. So far I have driven over 9,000 miles with no problems. A car like this may be a little extra to buy and maintain but the enjoyment you get out of it more than makes up for the extra cost. I would highly recommend this car.

It is still an American car. I had to take it bachkthe next day because the power steering pump seals were bad, but it is still a Cadilac. What a drive!!
