Strength:

Sound System, interior, exterior.

Weakness:

Mechanically the car is just trouble.

I bought the car about 2 year ago. It looked brand new with less than 30k miles. In the first month I had to spent close to $ 2,000 replacing power steering pump, valve cover gasket, AC. It was a very bad start. With less than 60k miles the transmission had to be rebuild $2,500. This is my wife car and she drive very carefully. AAMCO could not explain why the trainy went bad. Another sensor went bad a month after that ($500). I tought my ford was bad.... I am trading the car in. I am very dissapointed with this car. Because of that I will never buy a Cadillac again. It is a big piece of crap. Still looking excellent but mechanically is very problematic. My honest advice avoid this car.

Strength:

Nice road manners, very close to a BMW for half the price!

Weakness:

Has common problems but what car don't.

The Cadillac Catera is a car all in its own. They are very rare because they are built from the opel omega MV6 in Germany. If you like BMW, Mercedes etc, you will love the Catera. Just remember one thing when you buy any german car plan on keeping it up, because they will cost you more than the Toyota but you will have a very nice ride in the process. The Catera is very nice, try one only if you can afford the repairs.

Strength:

Looks, sound system, handling and comfort while driving.

Weakness:

Slow off the line, but a great car @ 2 to 3K RPM's.

The car was in very good shape. The body had no issues and the interior was just short of new. I had a couple of consumer related problems that were fixed for under $500 and the car seems to be running fine. If I drive in snow, I put it in sport mode and it drives reasonably well in those conditions. Overall, for what I paid, (it had 107K miles on it), I'm quite pleased. My mechanic felt it was a good investment as well.

Strength:

Fun, sporty, decent MPG, every option (my fav - ALL windows have auto up and down)

Weakness:

rear-wheel drive, should have thought abouth that before buying, SD has crazy amounts of snow and the car has absolutely no weight in the trunk

We had a ton of problems with this car in the first year. The first winter we owned it was absolutely horrible. The car spent approx. 1 month in the shop. Head gaskets, valve covers, some sensor regulating cold starts, etc. The moonroof opened and closed by itself, while the car was not running. All problems fixed and NONE since. But of course it is garaged every night now, don't want the cold weather to scare it.

We bought this car to replace my good friend the Pontiac Bonneville SSEI. I was a little disappointed, but the Catera has been a decent car overall.

Strength:

Good stereo. Handles well (it really does zig as they said in the old commercials).A.C. works fine. Brakes are great. Spacious trunk. Good car for small families.

Weakness:

Back seat legroom. Slight pull to the right. Sluggish take off speed (my '88 accord will smoke it off the line). Not a good car for Mom and the soccer team.

So far, no problems. Front passenger window stopped working yesterday but is fine this morning. Car had 71,000 miles on it when we bought it. We've put about 1000 on it ourselves. It's a blast to drive. Kind of sluggish off the line, but at around 2000-3000 rpm it starts to haul. It will reach 90 very quickly. I don't use the sport mode much because with it it seems to lose any top end performance it has in normal mode and I don't want to over-rev this car, especially with twin cams. After reading a LOT of negative reviews of this car I felt I had to post my own. So far a very good car. If I could find another in this good of shape I would buy it (if it was a little bit cheaper than what I paid for this one).

it is fun to drive & has all the bells and whistles! (Beauty in Disguise)

Weakness:

Not reliable, never knowing what will go wrong next.Terrible to drive in winter.

We just got rid of our 97 Catera--- a big weight lifted off our shoulders--- I swear this car was possessed. So many problems one after another with that car and we took good care of it. Never would buy another Cadillac ever again, I just feel bad for the person that has it now!!!!!! My advice to anyone even thinking of buying a Catera-- DON'T DO IT- IT WILL BE YOUR BIGGEST REGRET!

Strength:

Good looking, peppy in sport mode, nice dash set-up

Weakness:

Rides rough, dash lights(trouble lights) stay on, minimal storage, window buttons should be on doors, not quite genuine Cadillac quality that your used to.

I have had this car for a day and a half, and the test drive yesterday was fine. The "abs" and "traction control" light on the dash stayed on during the test drive(about 2 miles only). The guy at the dealership said these stayed on when he drove it too, as this was a trade in for one of his high-end cars. He said it was possibly a dirty sensor, I was skeptical, but I knew some people with test equipment and such, so I bought the car. The car drove really well, and my wife loved it too. I bought the car with cash, and got the title before I left the dealership, so this thing was all mine. On the way home, I noticed those two lights on, but the Speedometer wasn't working now. After about 5 miles, the two lights on the dash went off, but the check engine light came on and the speedometer started working. The next morning, I went out and checked it and drove it a little, and now all three light fluctuate on and off, and the speedometer has a mind of its own. I hope this can be fixed cheap, because I like the car in general.

Strength:

Handling & Reliability

Weakness:

Oil Leaks

I love my Catera. Other than an oil leak I have not had any issues with it. I have owned it for two years now and have put 30,000 miles on it.

I love the way it handles it hugs the curves like nothing else I have ever driven.

It appears that any reliability issues got worked out by the 2001 model.

I highly recommend the 2001 model but can not speak to older versions of the car.

Weakness:

the car

This is my daughters first car, it's the WORST!!! We've only had it for 5 months and already over $4000! Thank god I bought a warrenty for it online. What frustrates me the most is that they so saw us coming! Women! yeah...we'll sell the piece of crap to them, they won't know. Not only did I pay nearly $3000 more than whats it worth, I can't even sell it to take a loss (it's only worth $4000,that's mint condition)!!! Transmission was fixed (that went the 2nd month) Head gaskets, brake light will not work due to something electrical, passanger seat caught on fire (something electrical with the seat warmers, now the heating/cooling quit working, the rpm's and gas gage don't work and the steering wheel is so loose you have to have both hands on the steering wheel. The worst part is, my daughter and I can't afford to fix it so we'll be making payments on a car that sits in are driveway! Please! don't buy this car....PLEASE!

Strength:

interior build quality, looks and drive appeal. very peppy v6 with good responce when sport mode is selected.I love the bose 12 disc cd player.....sounds very exspensive and clear.

Weakness:

reliability would appear a big problem with this car.....im lucky so far but it dos'nt bode well.No body seems to service this european caddy......an oversite from cadillac.

After reading the reviews of the catera i thought i would be the rare owner of a good catera. I have owned it for 9 months and it has been problem free. i appreciate it is not along time but i feel i may have a good un'!!. it has only needed a new remote keyfob replaced and this is not a car issue and was replaced under warranty anyway. My catera is approching 10 years old with 82000 miles under its belt and just had it professionally valeted and the forest green paintwork looks fresh and glossy. The leather is in tip top condition and it feels tight so build quality is very good.I just have a feeling that with other reports im due some mechanical issues soon........pray for me !!.
