A4 3.0Q
Strength:
quattro, interior, details, paint, fit of materials, feel of materials, ruggedness on road, room in car versus 2001 model, reliability, customer treatment, sales experience
Weakness:
check engine light came on during first day, but I found it was simply a few loose fuses. Oh well. No other problems, but the car is new. My wife and I already own a 2001 A4 TQ (see review below - mga5m) and wanted to buy a TT, but a little baby came into the works. An Allroad was the next choice, but it was out of our price range and too big for my wife to see out of. The new A4 looked different from my 2001 A4 and had virtually all of the fancy features of the Allroad and A6 series that we decided to buy it. We ordered it with the large engine so that it would be smoother and quieter on the road and give us the leather electric seat option. A bit of a price jump for leather, really, but we did it. We cannot be more pleased with the car. My wife is so happy with it, especially after having driven a Miata for 13 years straight. Audi has definitely made a luxury car with this new A4. It is so relaxing to drive it. Anyone who wanted more room in the back will be satisfied now. The car feels bigger and stiffer and more luxurious than the 2001 model. We got it with tiptronic, so it is not as sporty as my 5spd 2001 A4, but that is what we wanted. Many people discuss on these boards that BMW or Mercedes has this or that, and Audi has this or that, but I think all are fine cars. You have to respect high quality German sport performance/engineering to really appreciate any of these cars. I liked Audi''s pricing, reliability, customer service and respect. I really liked the 4-wheel drive the most. The car is solid in all weather. BMW may perform better on dry roads, but we drive our Audis all the time in all weather. Quattro is superior. I also find the Audi interiors more elegant than the Mercs or BMWs. We know there will be repairs in the future - all mechanical items need it sometime, but you shouldn''t buy a German car if you want perfect reliability and high performance - there is no such thing. That is why racing teams have pit crews...... Similar Products Used: Mazda Miata, Hondas |

A4 1.8T Quattro
Strength:
quattro, styling, Audi service at dealerships (although it can take a while for repairs), interior, paint, reliability, respect by sales people where I purchased, quality product indeed
Weakness:
Even with all of the positive things said, Audi''s past reliability problems still make me worry, but I have had no problems at all. I worked for an Audi/Porsche dealership in the 1980s, just before and during what may be called Audi''s ''dark times'' with customers, service, reliability, and public perception. Audi got the low end of the stick with the surging lawsuits and many people thought Audis were cheap and overpriced. I myself never considered buying one last year until my brother told me his three year old A4 had given him not a single problem in the three years he owned it. I was astonished and did more research into the A4 and Audi in general. What I found from reading sites like this and visiting the dealership in Maryland where I bought the car was that Audi has done an about-face with their company style and car quality/reliability. Their pricing is very competitive, if not too low, compared to BMWs and Mercedes. Audi had troubles and lost much marketshare over the last ten years, and they know it. They are now much more customer-conscious. Audi cars are very reliable, as far as German sports sedans go. Reading through these reviews here and elsewhere, all I see as far as negative comments go are statements with regard to interior space, cupholders and wind noise. There are always some people who experience repair problems - this is a fact of life with any mechanical item. I expect my A4 will need repairs eventually. Anyone who thinks they can buy high performance and perfectly reliable cars, German at that, are fooling themselves. It seems to me that most Audi customers now are educated and aware of the fact that they are buying high performance and high quality at a fair price. I surely am one of those customers. Driving the A4 is like a dream come true for me after having driven japanese cars for 14 plus years. Sure, Acuras are nice, smooth, reliable cars. But they are not as fun as a German sedan on a beautiful, twisty mountain road. I smile everytime I get into or look at my car. The interior is flawless. The exterior is conservative, but elegant. The steering is excellent. The four wheel drive is perfect. No other european car can match the quattro engineering, even though BMW and Mercedes try to make a couple of 4-wheel drives. Audi now dominates the Le Mans races for a reason - engineering and reinvigorated philosophies. I feel fortunate to have purchased an A4 now in the re-emergence of Audi. Most people do not appreciate Audi now, at least not y Similar Products Used: Honda Accord, Honda Prelude |

A4 2.8 Quattro
Strength:
-Quattro. Great handling. Especially in snow/rain. -Great fit & finish -Nicely laid out red dash guages -Trunk room, especially w/ the 60/40 fold down seats. -Bose stereo system -Acceleration above 50 mph. Great for passing. -Nice gearbox & clutch. -Good size wheels -Fun to drive -Love the subtle exterior styling...classy -Good safety features. My insurance barely went up from my Altima.
Weakness:
-HERE IT GOES...after 3 months... -Wet braking delay. Slightly dangerous. -Trip/Computer screen completely fades in warm weather. Told this is common from Audi. Is it???? (I''ll deal considering the $$$) -A little sluggish off the line. -Cup holders in a bad location -Hard to quickly read analog clock in dash -Small backseat/no footroom -Drivers side wind noise noticable -Static on radio when rear defogger is being used -Poor range for alarm remote control -Weak headlights -Only 50K warranty -No seat memory -Constant check engine light it seems -Parts (availability and $$$$$$$$$) -CD doesn''t display track time... -And whatever you do...Don''t lose the plastic floormat hold down screws!!! They don''t sell replacements. You must buy whole floormat set($$$)to get those suckers. What a scam! I''ve driven about 10,000 miles in 3 months and I have to say, as glaring as the weaknesses are that are listed, I pretty much love this car. The Quattro has excellent handling and is fun to drive. The fit and finish are superb. I wanted an all wheel drive car so a lot of other cars weren''t considered when I was looking. There are some definite annoyances that have come up with the A4. Read on.... Similar Products Used: Have owned a ''91 Nissan Maxima (180K) and a ''96 Nissan Altima (202K). Loved and abused those cars. The Audi is a different animal though. gas gauge does''t work, fog light out, oil meter reading empty, all the audi service dept''s are booked till next mont or so. i love the car. it is absolutely gorgeous to look at, and the chicks dig it. i thought about the is300, but to tell you the truth, i wasn''t too impressed with the IS. it''s an overgrown corolla with a lexus price. a friend of mine bought an A6, and it looked so nice i ended up with the A4. |

The Quatro all wheel drive. Great looks. The sport package closes the door on handling. Worry free ownership. The dealership still takes care of anything .
Weakness:
Wish i had a 2002 A4 I have had the this car for almost 3 years and can''t find one bad word to say about it. The style, engineering and comfort all add to the equation. Awesome. The Quatro system has hauled me around MN in the worst weather conditions without a hick-up. I wish the 1.8t could run the same stock hp as the tt, but aftermarket potential is unlimited. Way to go Audi, you hit a home run. Similar Products Used: 96 VW Jetta 87 Audi 4000 |

Strength:
The Dealership service is great, 5-Speed turbo has great acceleration The gauges are perfect Plenty of space inside and trunk. 6-CD plus cassette radio that is a plus Xenon Headlights is a plus Sport Package 17" wheels plus a better suspension definitely a plus
Weakness:
None yet. What can I tell you, I just bought the #2 Car in the Car and Driver Reviews for 2002. To me it should be #1 but they say Acura RSX is #1(Doubting). The Dealership had great service and had a good Salesman selling me the car. I have been riding my car about a week now and I am enjoying every minute of it. I definitely bought it 5-speed since the Turbo charge works better in a 5-Speed. The interior is excellent, the room is more that adequate, and trunk space is unbeleivable large. The Xenon Headlights definitely is a plus. This car has to be definitely the number one this year. If you all live in Houston, TX, try buying this vehicle @ Advantage Audi ask for Eric Pallanez, he will do a great deal for you. Similar Products Used: BMW 330 and 325. |

All-wheel drive 6 speed manual Lot cheaper then 330i BMW
Weakness:
Bad gas mileage due to 3,700lb curb weight Minor electrical problems Just picked up a 2002 A4 3.0 liter. Very nice looking car. I get a lot of compliments on it. The car handles great due to all-wheel drive. Acceleration is fine for daily driving, defintely not a race car. BMW was lot more fun to drive the hell out of though. Audi is lot more comfortable even with a sports package, roomier and has lot more convinience features plus dealers are willing to bargain lot more then a BMW dealers. The problems I had so far: 1. Turning lights went out on one side of the car due to a bad connection in one of the lights. 2. Gas gauge stopped working after 200 miles 3. Homelink transmitter never worked 4. 2nd gear is not as smooth as all of the other ones (maybe I just need to break it in). I am happy overall, hoping that all of the problems will get fixed by a dealer. Similar Products Used: BMW 328I |

Strength:
Just an overall solid car.Quiet, smooth, great handling, and it''ll go in the snow!
Weakness:
I had to replace all the wheel bearings ($1500), The front bushings started to squeak and groan even though there was nothing mechanically wrong with them. The dealer said it would cost around $1500 to fix...I ended up pulling the bottom bushings apart and lubed them up fixing the noise. I bought this car used in 1999 with 60,000 miles on it. 3 years and 40,000 miles later I still love it. I still want to look back at it every time I park it. I have had a few problems with the car, and would have to say the overall quality is not quite as good as the Honda Accords I''ve owned over the years, but if I was getting a new car tomorrow there is no way I''d spend $25,000 dollars on an comparibly equipped Accord when I could get the A4 with Quattro for $5000 more. |

I needed a car to replace my 1993 Mazda twin turbo RX7. I had a self-imposed budget of $30K. I did exhaustive research online, periodicals, and test drives at various dealerships. My first choice was the BMW 3 series since every magazine journal ranks it first. I couldn''t get the car priced at $30K with the options I wanted. Ditto for the Mercedes C class sedan and the Jaguar X type. I even test drove the Lexus IS300. I was so turned off by its looks that I must admit some bias. The car looks like an aftermarket teenage rice burner. The BMW was very nice but everyone has one in every different color in my town. The Jag was nice but too expensive. The Audi was the last car I test drove. Fully loaded with xenon, sunroof, sports package, bose stereo the car priced out at $30K on the nose. I thought about spending another $4K for the 3.0L V6 but talking to the salesman who was also an Audi nut convinced me to stay with the 1.8T. Apparently he chipped his car for $600 and now the car screams like the 3.0 V6. |
