Strength:
very good steady-state grip in dry or wet, good ride comfort for performance level
Weakness:
hydroplanes fairly easily and tires do not grip well from a standing start on even mildly wet pavement If there is a better high performance all-season tire, I want it. This tire gives up a little steering response and turn-in to the OEM Goodyear RSAs, but also has much higher steady state grip in the dry and wet. In addition, these tire are far quieter and handle small sharp bumps (Bott''s dots) much more comfortably. Please note that I have 205/50 R15s with the asymmetrical tread, the higher profile tires in the line may not perform similarly. Highly recommended for anyone who needs an all-season tire with entertaining performance. Similar Products Used: Goodyear RSA |

Bought it for performance and safety and it delivers.
Weakness:
Haven''t found any yet. 45,000 year round miles in New England almost all highway at 70 - 80 mph. Excellent tire - winters have been mild but drove through without a hitch. Very good handling for fairly aggressive driving. These are the V rated version. Similar Products Used: My first set on this car - based on tires I''ve used on other cars, I''ll buy SP5000''s again. |

Smooth ride. Quiet. Good dry and wet grip. Seems like it has high grip limits.
Weakness:
Sidewalls and tire carcass are so soft that I believe this causes some scary highway and twisty road handling characteristics, at least in size 205/55-16. Purchased these in size 205/55ZR16, for use on my 1997 Subaru Legacy GT, on the stock wheels. These Dunlops replace the same size Bridgestone RE92 tires. The Dunlops ride smooth, and are quiet. The Dunlops have good dry and wet grip. I haven''t been in the snow yet, but I hear these tires will be generally good in the snow, which is one of the reasons I bought these. I have read a lot of reviews on these Dunlops, both here and on other websites such as AudiWorld.com, and I am wondering if there are some differences in production lines, or if certain sizes are much different than others, because I have to agree with the few people who say that these are more like touring tires and that the tire sidewalls are so soft that rapid lane changes can be scary. The rear end of the car now feels very floaty, and the car behaves more like a luxury boat (such as Buick LeSabre) with any quick movements (including hard braking) at highway speeds. At speeds below 40mph, its much less noticeable, but at highway speeds, I have had to change my aggressive style of driving, and I have to pay more attention to the car''s behavior, especially in narrow highway construction zones. The car was fully checked before and after these tires were put on, so there is no problem with the car itself. I have played with different tire pressures on these Dunlops, and the higher pressures help alleviate these problems, but even at high pressures, the tires still exhibit lots of undesireable handling traits. I''m not saying that I don''t like these tires. I''ll wait to see how they do in snow before coming to a final conclusion. But the highway and twisty road handling characteristics of these tires worry me. If the snow/winter traction is a lot better than the Bridgestone RE92 tires, than the handling trade-off will be worthwhile. If the snow traction is not better than the Bridgestone RE92s, then I will get rid of these Dunlops. Its that different of a tire, compared to every other all-season performance tire I have had. Maybe these handling problems only apply to Dunlop SP5000 in size 205/55-16, and maybe its only a problem on a Subaru Legacy GT. Or maybe my tires came off a production line that makes these with thinner sidewalls than other SP5000s; I don''t know. I''m just reporting the facts. I will be contacting the TireRack and Dunlop, to get their opinions. Similar Products Used: In the same size, I have used Bridgestone RE92. In other sizes, too many to list. Many many other tires over my years with many other cars. |

Strength:
wet/dry traction, noise and comfort level. Fantastic!
Weakness:
Doesn't look as good on my Cougar as the OEM Firestone Firehawks. A very good tire at a great price. The steering response is supurb, wet and dry traction excellent and the comfort and noise level are fantastic! Drove it through several rain storms and it handled very well, hydroplaning was virtually non-existent. The thing that I like best about these tires are the comfort and noise level. Gave my '99 cougar a lot smoother ride than the OEM Firestone Firehawks. I've never heard any noise coming from them even with the windows down. Similar Products Used: Firestone Firehawks. |

good overall all season tire. Good wet and dry traction and very good in snow for an all season tire.
Weakness:
ride is a little harder due to the tread design that enables the tire to perform well in wet and snow conditions. This is the trade-off we must make to use one tire all year! Used the perelli P6000 sport veloce tires for 50k miles and I love that tire except it does not handle well in snow and progressivly gets worse as the tread wears down. I decided to try the Dunlop Sprt 5000. I must say this tire is very good in the snow and rain. You give up a little smoother ride compared to the P6000 Perelli's but still a very good ride and I have a tire that can handle some snow. Overall I would not hesitate to buy these tires based on performance trade-offs and price. You just can't have it both ways but this is a great wayy to go. Strength:
SUPERB Dry performance and handling. Even with 3.55s, I can't spin them on dry ground. They stick to the ground in tight turns and the ride is nice and smooth. In the wet, they cut through standing water and you don't hydroplane. In the turns you still have to take it easy (don't go WOT in a 90 degree turn). On snow, you still have to exercise extreme caution, but they'll give you decent traction on ice and hard snow.
Weakness:
The sidewall seems to be a tad soft - I hit a curb once and I've got a few cuts on the part where the sidewall meets the tread, whereas my Michelin Roadhandlers (on the T-bird) can take any amount of beating w/o showing a scratch. I would recommend the Dunlops given their price ($85 each at Tirerack - cheaper elsewhere) and their performance - these are Ultra High Performance All Season Tires, Z-rated (W-rated) to boot. Similar Products Used: The Car came with Goodyear Eagle LS tires, which are DRAG SLICKS compared to the Dunlops. In the rain w/ Eagles, the car would hydroplane badly, and you can spin the tires here and there on dry ground. I could powerbrake to about 1200 RPM and the tires would spin out. However, the Goodyears have a stiffer sidewall and seem to not stick as much in the turns. |
