Strength:
Clean burn (The result of multi spark design)resulting in improved mpg. Realiblity aside_a must for forced induction/nos etc.
Weakness:
Reliability_a concern for a daily driver. The car performed well for about a year then it randomly began to break-up at between 2k & 3.5k rpm, crusing & under hard acceleration. This MSD SCI unit with SS coil pack & 8mm wires with stock distributor cap looks good & is great when working but I have lost one coil (MSD did replace it)and a ignitor. To date I have been towed 3 times. I thought I lost another ignitor per the MSD ignition test but just decided to bypass the SCI unit for the heck of it and wamo the car cranked_so you figure. MSD6AL
Strength:
improvement in driveability and starting
Weakness:
can be noisy, thats right noisy! the amplifiers inside it can do that sometimes. my noise went away after about a year. wonderful device. big improvement is cold engine driveabilty. in winter,my 78' trans am would stumble until the water temp hit 160 but now i can start the car and go on the coldest, dampest morning with no more than 45 seconds of warm up. the MSD6AL saved the car from the auction block, no joke. interestingly though i saw no improvement at the dragstrip. i have had this unit for several years and never had any problems. car does start better too. Well documented instructions for an easy installation. Longer plug and oil life. Easy starting. Better low RPM throttle response. Ignition retard. Rev limiter as well as other features easily adjusted at the unit using trimmer pots.
Weakness:
None so far. This is the Digital 6 Plus model. Easy to install. The unit mounted adjustment pots for ignition retard start and rev limiter are very handy. The ignition retard (fixed 20 dg) is nice when running high base timing. This unit also features a two step ignition retard and two step rev limiter for use with NOS or forced induction. I am using a cam with a 249 @050 duration at 110 dg lobe separation. A little lumpy at idle. The first thing I noticed is how much easier the vehicle started and how it smoothed out the idled somewhat. Throttle response in the low RPMs is a nice improvement. Plus it keeps the plugs cleaner for the long cruise nights at low RPMs. Another thing I noticed the oil stays cleaner longer. Less fuel buildup over time. You know that relates to a longer lasting engine. Similar Products Used: Analog 6 series years ago. |

I use the MSD DIS-2 unit, model 6211. Very nice product, relatively easy to install as long as you know what you're doing. Have had no problems with the unit whatsoever, unlike others who don't know how to install a light bulb properly. *smirk* Instructions are very straightforward and setup remarkably simple. Controlling the unit is exceptionally easy and good for nitrous use (to retard timing). Staging limit good for the track. I definitely recommend this mod for FI or nitrous usage. |

Everything I would not recommend this product to anyone. I bought the Msd 6A and installed it onto my car. After I installed it the car ran like crap. It barley idled and idled horibley. Before I installed this ignition the car ran great and now it idles real bad and the performance has dropped considerably compared to what it used to be. Now when I floor the car the engine hesitates and some times almost dies. |

Intermittent cut out problems leaving you dead on the side of the road after driving 30 mins. Many people have had the same problem. Definitely should only be used for racing. This product stinks. Although it definitely makes a difference on performance it never works. I have had intermittent cut out problems from day 1 and MSD refuses to accept that it is their ignition. I ran diagnostics and have now purchased a second unit (MSD 6 OFFROAD) and will probably buy a third to keep in my jeep for when this one goes out so Im not stuck on the side of the hi-way. MSD loves to blame it on your coil or wiring, but if you search yahoo for "msd 6 ignition problems" you will see a bunch of people with the same intermittent cut out problem which is a bear to diagnose and MSD will have you replace the whole engine before they take responsibility and even then they might not. I wouldn''t buy another MSD if you gave it to me for free. MSD = May Stall Daily. Pete |

MSD 6AL
Strength:
Faster Starting. Smoother Idle. Very-Slight yet noticeable performance gain and fuel economy improovement.
Weakness:
Reliability is just not acceptable. Maybe OK for a weekend-only hotrodder...But for a daily driver this would be insane. Product does as it claims. However the units reliability is very shakey. I have replaced 3 units...Plus the handfull of enthusiasts I hang with have had identical problems...My first unit arrived DOA...No problem, stuff happens...My second one arrived and lasted 2 months..Then left me sitting on the HWY...Thank god I could switch back to factory ignition easily..Anyways...6 Months later that replacement started acting all wierd and throwing my spark advance to like +40DEG then -40DEG repeatedly...Anyways I now have yet another new unit brand new in the box fresh off the plane from the warrantee department at MSD...Only this time it is for sale...$150.00 or best offer... definate preformance increase. not much, but you can tell in the 3000 + rpm range. I have the MSD 6AL by the way. Real easy hook up. You DONT need the E-Z connector they want to sell you for $20 bucks. If anyone needs help connecting it on their 5.0 liter, email me.
Weakness:
Placing the box somewhere is a problem. If you dont have cold air induction like the way I do, you have to find a place to cram it into. I put my where the stock air filter box was under the tube that runs into the fender wall for the cold air. however, you still have to rig it into place. They really need to focus on making that box more compact. otherwise, your moving stuff around to get it into the engine compartment. AND............your car WILL run more hot. my Engine temp did increase from a quarter of the temp gauge to the one half range. Thats BAD. I have to look into getting better cooling now. Any sugg.? If your going to or running NOS, you HAVE to have it. Thata the bottom line of that. If your NOT running NOS like me, it is still a notice in power increase and any other mods will like the extra spark. Similar Products Used: None |
