I was with USAA for 20yrs, my parents for 42yrs. The service I received from USAA resulting from the theft of my truck was reprehensible. I was forced to submit to an embarrassing interrogation in my own home and asked irrelevant personal questions to the point where I had to ask the interrogator to leave. USAA rejected all my research and Blue Book estimates as to the value of my vehicle and made me a "take it or leave it,” offer based on Market Valve. When asked to supply the information this Market Value quote was based on USAA refused. I was forced to accept $7700.00 for a vehicle I had already paid $10.000 in payments and still owed $4.000. The truck in question was like new and in terrific shape. After the claim was settled USAA warned me that if I didn''t continue with a rider policy - I didn''t own a vehicle now - that there was no guarantee I would be accepted as a customer in the future. I am currently with another company and would not recommend USAA to anyone. They will handle the small claims without question. When it counts is when they show their true colors! |

Strength:
none Very unsatisfied. I was recently hit (and my child was injured)by a woman who had been in a previous accident less than an hour previously. USAA took her statement before even speaking to me. They have provided miminmal assistance and even denied medical expenses for my child''s injuries even though he was ambulanced to the hospital. Their service is terrible. |

BMW 528ia
Strength:
1. Incomparable luxury, finish and features for the price 2. Uniquely perfect drive and handling, far exceeding anything else I''ve driven 3. Over 60% value retention after 60 mths 4. Solid feel throughout 5. Heated seats AND steering wheel 6. ZERO problems in 5 years/92K miles 7. Service treats you like royalty 8. Full sized spare tire 9. Power moonroof operates in every conceivable direct and has a sun shade 10. Front seats can be adjusted in infinite directions, then remembered
Weakness:
1. Service visits cost $500-1000, even when nothings wrong 2. "Golddigger Girlfriend" magnet 3. Hard not to exceed the speed limit, as the drive is so smooth, you forget how fast you''re going 4. Glove compartment and cup holders are basically useless 5. As the suspension and steering are highly integrated and delicate, bumping a curb at 5-10 mph can cause $2K-3K damage 6. Bodywork can be extremely expensive (use Haws Import Auto Body, Inc in Concord, CA if you live in the Bay Area to get PERFECT work and reasonable prices) 7. Insurance can be expensive (I pay $2400/yr in CA with a perfect driving record) 8. BMW''s hidden trunk CD stacker only holds up to 6 CD''s) 9. Black exterior paint shows "swirls" badly, requiring frequent waxing to hide (get silver or white) 10. Seems to be a "ding" magnet (although Dent Wizard will come to you and make all dings disappear for only $175/panel) I purchased my BMW 528ia new in 1997. It has run flawlessly for almost exactly 5 years. Even after 5 years and 92,000 miles, its drive is incredibly enjoyable, smooth and safe in emergency maneuvers. It has become very obvious, that for the price, it is not possible to buy another car with anything near the drive, space, features, safety, image, finish, service, value retention (I can attest to over 60% after 60 months!), intuitive ergonomics and overall value of a BMW!!! After driving the BMW for 5 years, every other car is grossly substandard by comparison. Similar Products Used: In the last few months, while considering my next car, I rented and/or test drove almost every comparable car, including Mercedes E Class; Porsche Boxter; Lexus GS; Cadillac STS and Catera; Volvo C an |

Weakness:
1. USAA DOUBLED my auto insurance premiums for ONE CLAIM in 20 YEARS costing LESS THAN $500. 2. Remote, uninterested service, conducted by phone. It appeared as if no one at USAA cared, comprehended, or even read my accident report. 3. In spite of a number of small claims submitted by my husband to USAA over the same period, his rates were never increased. 4. Other blatantly discriminatory treatment by USAA in both the insurance and financial operations In 1974, I joined USAA as a young Ensign in the U. S. Navy. In the 1990s, I made my FIRST accident claim with them. It was a minor fender bender in a parking lot costing less than $500. While USAA settled the claim quickly, they raised my annual insurance premium from $600 to $1200 for the next three years. After 20 years of paying USAA without a claim, and getting good driver rate reductions from them year after year, I was treated shabbily, gouged for more than triple the amount of my claim. For example, when I tried to reach USAA Headquarters in Texas by their toll-free number, I was told I had to deal ONLY with the regional office. At one point, they PRETENDED to put me through to someone in Texas, but when I asked point-blank if I was talking to someone in Texas, they admitted they were in the regional office! For an outfit first founded by military officers, this is pretty dishonorable service! GEICO did not feel that a claim under $500 was enough to raise my rates and kept the premium at about the same $600 level so I switched. While Federal co-workers were skeptical about GEICO, I have not had to file a claim in the 5+ years since I switched and don''t plan to, knock wood. I am, however, looking for other insurance options, which is how I found this site. Also, comparing the disparate ways USAA treated me and my husband, a USAA member in his own right, makes me believe I''ve experienced blatant sexism at their hands. USAA appears to have lost its way over the last decade. There''s a money-grubbing aspect not only to its insurance operations but its financial operations as well, as if massive cash infusions are desperately needed. As an MBA, I understand all about increasing market share and revenues, improving cash flows and cutting costs, but USAA has gone way overboard in pursuit of these goals. Strength:
Very Low rates Easy to get in touch with. I''''ve had only 1 claim, but everyone I talked to were pleasant.
Weakness:
Military or past military only. No "Real" person, Phone or mail only. My new car, less than 2 months old was invloved in a T-bone accident. Other driver 100% at fault, blew a red light that had been red for at least 5-10 seconds. My car had over $16,500 damage to the passenger side along with Unibody damage. I insisted on a new car do to diminished value if repaired. After about 30 min. stating my claims, USAA picked up the remaining tab for a new car. It would have just cost them around $1,500 to fix the car do to the other insurance Co. paying the rest. The other driver had the minimum coverage allowed in IL, $15,000 for collision. STUPID people, not worth the risk. Also, they waved my deductable and paid me within 2 weeks after our conversation. Similar Products Used: Country Companies State Farm American Family Ins. |

Weakness:
Woe is you if you get hit by a USAA driver. I assure you you will not be treated fairly. They can treat you badly and get away with it. I have been a USAA policyholder for over 20 years. They had always been a great carrier. However, in April, on my way to Army duty at 6am on a Sunday morning, (while stopped at a stoplight no less), I was broadsided by the DUI son of ANOTHER USAA policyholder. 8 months later, my nightmare is no where even close to being settled. They are UNREASONABLE, UNFAIR MEANSPIRITED, and I beleive DISHONEST. They have treated me terribly. I have no choice but to take legal action - just to get a fair settlement. Strength:
Reasonable premiums, quick and friendly claims process, generous settlements.
Weakness:
Not the cheapest. USAA is outstanding, and I should know! I have filed three comprehensive suto claims with them and one renter''s claim (my Acura was vandalized, then stolen within the first year of my coverage, necessitating claims against my auto and renter''s policies, then I filed another comprehensive glass claim). They always paid me EXTREMELY quickly and courteously. I am almost embarassed by the generosity of the settlement on my car theft: they paid me only $200 less than I paid for my car, brand-new, when it was stolen and totalled right around its 1-year anniversary - this was $500 more than it had even occurred to me to ask for! Note how many of the negative critiques below come from people who were involved in accidents with USAA insured, rather than USAA customers - to me this is the whole point of insurance, and I frankly want them to play hardball with the other involved driver and insurance company (though this does not excuse underpaying if I am at fault). USAA is incredibly easy to work with as an active-duty member, and they make deployments as painless as possible. I concede they may not be the perfect insurance company, but they are close enough that I will never use anyone else! Similar Products Used: State Farm, CSAA |

Weakness:
Claims ajusters are pathetic and have no respect for customers'' concerns. After 11 years, I filed my first claim. It took 3 1/2 weeks to receive an appraisal for the damages to my car and I could not drive it during that time. Despite two written requests, I have yet to receive an answer for the extraordinary delay. Similar Products Used: None |
