Strength:

Over the last year and a half, whatever they had in terms of strengths have quickly become non-existant. I've had a policy with them for 15 yrs and issues with them when moving. They couldn't seem to get my billing to my new address and caused my policy to overlap and created problems with the DMV where I was living. They suggested drafts from my bank account, however, they would "skip" payment request submissions and more issues from there.

Weakness:

If you're the policy holder, make sure that you have all your information on what your actual coverage is and what they have a "right" to do. After all, they are regulated by the state you reside in. If you've had the unfortunate experience of also being the victim in an accident where the other driver is ALSO their policy holder, be prepared to FIGHT for your rights. Know your rights and what the State and Federal government requirements are. They have no qualms in embellishing what they can/cannot do. Question everything they say. Do your research. Don't assume that what they say is gospel, especially when it come to the true value of your car. It's amazing how quickly they change their tune when you confront them with information acquired directly from the insurance regulators. In my opinion, they could care less what the customer needs are. They are solely out for the money. They want to cut their losses at the expense of the consumer. Don't believe their commercials "Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there". If that's the kind of neighbor they are, let me live in a deserted island. I want neighbors who care about others, not ones that are only looking out for themselves.

NOT IN A MILLION YEARS! If you'd asked me 3 years ago, yes, but with their rapidly deteriorating level of service and increasing greed, it would be totally uncalled for.

I now have Nationwide and find them to be more interested in my needs than their bottom line. I've only had this service for about 2 months, so to be perfectly honest, I can't give a true comparison at this point. However, people need to be aware of the fact that State Farm is not what they make themselves to be.

Strength:

Everything

Weakness:

One claim took 2 years to settle, but I DID get 75% of my money back

Although their insurance rates might be a bit higher than others, the level of service I have received over the years cannot be matched. When I was 17, I TOTALLED (read - slid out of control, 2 360's in the middle of a busy highway, hit a high curb, went over a guard rail, through a billboard, and landed down a hill) a 1991 Cutlass Ciera S. They paid for EVERYTHING and my rates barely went up. When I was 19, I was broadsided by a 1989 Mitsubishi truck. Over $5000 worth of damage to my 1994 Saturn SL1. They covered it and I got $375 of my $500 deductible back. Recently, my mirror was taken off by the Bookmobile. They authorized the repair work 2 days after it happened. Had my car back (better than new I might add) within a week. My agent (Steven Heller) is one of THE NICEST PEOPLE I have ever met. He's been extremely responsive to my needs. When I went to pick up my 1999 Saturn SC2, the lowest rate the dealership quoted me was @ 9.99%. He asked me what I was going to pay and I told him. He got me approved through a local bank around here for 7.49%. The dealership kept going lower and lower on the APR. They hit 6.99% and I told them that I was going with the FIRST quote from my agent and that if they still intended to sell me this car, they should quit calling me... I've occasionally debated the possibility of switching companies (my ex is paying lower rates on her 2000 Cirrus), but their expedition of claims and responsiveness to my needs makes me stick around time and time again. If my agent were like some of the others described in the reviews below, I'd probably drop them w/o a second thought. As it stands - I'm one completely satisfied customer.

Strength:

Excellent staff. Friendly agents. Very timely responses.

Weakness:

None so far.

My local office is equipped with very friendly people. They worked very hard to get me the absolute best price for auto insurance. They even called me up about two months after my policy had started to show me ways to get a cheaper rate.

Strength:

-great policy
-quick to file claim
-great people

Weakness:

-a bit expensive

It's tough to get cheap insurance when you're 22, but State Farm gave me the best deal, and has been extremely receptive to my needs. They have been quick to file my claim, and have given me the utmost personal attention. It wasn't easy making a decision between insurance companies based on just the price of coverage, but for all the benefits that you don't see on paper, State Farm is great.

Strength:

I probably am one of the more fortunate individuals to have my insurance with STATE FARM . I have everthing but life insurance with this one agaent in this little midwest city in the State of Kansas. They have been always understanding and easy to get along with . They have bent over backwards to assit me each and every time .

Weakness:

I don't like the way STATE FARM or any other insurance company rates the Chevrolet Camaro , their prices are too high for the car and it seems like it don't take much of anything to happen elsewhere and they raise your rates and you did nothing to cause it. It is just because you have a CAMARO

Rates are competitive with the exception of the Camaro and the longer you stay with them with accident free claims it does pay off later in dividends and premium dollars. I would recommend this insurance for the worthy wise family who does not have any hair-brain kids trying to get traffic tickets/accidents every other weekend.

Strength:

No hassel claims, friendly agents and claims representatives

Weakness:

Rates seem high but you seem to get what you pay for

I have used State Farm ever since I started Driving. I have never had any major problems with them. The discounts are great. I have had to make several claims with state farm and have never had any problems. One major accident I re-ended a car which in turn hit a truck. I filed my claim answered a few questions and they took care of the rest. It took a while for them to settle ALL the claims (there were 13 people involved!) but I never had to deal with it at all. They paid out over $60,000 and my rates ended up getting increased. But you get what you pay for.

For the peace of mind they provide me they are well worth it!

Strength:

Reasonable rates for clean records, do not hike rates for getting a ticket

Weakness:

Seems like I should be able to find a better rate?

Changed to State Farm a little over a year ago - they quoted me $340/6 mo. for comprehensive on my '89 Corolla. Progressive was asking $640 for a slightly worse policy! I have a clean record with no accidents and am now 27 years old. Progressive didn't reduce my rates when I turned 25, so I took my business elsewhere. My agent has an experienced and helpful secretary, who handled everything very well. I have yet to make a claim, and hope I won't need to when my new car arrives either. 4 stars for value (so far), and good overall rating due to the friendly and helpful secretary!

Strength:

I was with State Farm and with the same agent for 37 years and was delighted with the service and the relationship with the agent, though I never had a significant claim.

Weakness:

My agent retired and I subsequently had a minor claim. The areas claims office handled this in the most truncated, threatening and inefficient manner possible. After writing to the company CEO, I received a number of patronizing,"how can we make this up to you" calls. After 37 years with the company, I feel that I was treated worse than a stranger.

I would recommend State Farm only if you have an excellent relationship with an agent. Their claims people are insufferable. As I move toward retirement and downsize or eliminate homes, cars, motorcycles, motorhomes, etc., I will shop insurance alternatives.

I have purchased a variety of insurance coverages in my businesses and as an administrator for over the last 30 years. Nearly all have been more cost efficient and I never had the problems I recently encountered with State Farm.

Strength:

Price, once you get their discounts, stability (love them or hate them, they will be in the insurance business for many years to come).

Weakness:

My agent relies on his secretary to give basic information over the phone, she has given me wrong information before (to keep from having to do paperwork on her end) (for example, she told me that it takes "months" to suspend insurance if you are going to be out of town for an extended period of time (it can be done immediately)). Also, if you do have a wreck, your agent is out of the picture, you are dealing with their claim office at that point (though this might be a strength).

This is a good company if you take advantage of their discounts (though I have my home owners insurance through another company). If you do not get along with your agent, you can switch agents (though obviously they don't like to do that), I have not actually done it though. The prices for drivers with good records is great, I periodically check with other companies, but so far nobody has been able to beat the price I get with State Farm. So, I don't like them, but I stay with them.

Remember when you read others reviews that insurance companies are not in the business to give away money, they are in the business to make money. And they are not your best friend, don't "confess" tickets that they don't know about, or anything stupid like that. I don't like insurance companies(who wants to pay hundreds (or thousands) per year for something they hope to not use?), but see that they are necessary (who wants to lose their car or home in an accident and not be able to replace it?).
