Strength:

None that I know of. For routine customer service like updating your profile / changing address and issuing quotes they seem run of the mill.

Weakness:

Don't have as good rates in IL as in OH.

I have been shopping car insurance rates and find that all insurance companies have their share of bad ratings. So I decided to go for the lowest among the name brand ones. Meaning I let my Progressive policy expire after being with them 18 months. During this period I never had a claim, no tickets - nothing. But each time I renewed they raised my rate and when I changes states it went up close to 40%. The didn't seem to have it totally together because when trying to get me new quote there computers couldn't recall information that had been there for several months. Their system kept showing I owed money on the car even though I told them it was paid in full from the start. I have no experience with how they handle claims but on the assumption I wouldn't have any for at least 6 more months, I decided to go with a name brand that was close to $200 cheaper for a 6 mo. policy.

PROGRESSIVE DOES NOT KNOW THE MEANING OF QUALITY BY USING AFTERMARKET PARTS AND CUSTOMER SERVICE IS ALMOST NIL.

Progressive seemed reasonably priced at the time. Until I got into an accident last year. Initially they repaired my car with generic aftermarket parts not factory parts, the parts was defective 2x and finally after my complaints they replaced it with factory parts. Most vitally they did not bother to look over my whole engine bay for issues they just replaced the front end and used an aftermarket radiator. I had issues with that as well. It started leaking from a small fitting and that was replaced and then it started overheating, I brought it back to the body shop and they examined the car and tested the radiator and found nothing, they reinstalled and 3 weeks later it overheated again. This time I thought it was a dealer warranty issue. Dealer informed me that I blew a head gasket, much to my surprise and faced with inspection fee for $138 and initial cost $1600 worth of repairs and "may be more". I called Progressive and said they were not going to reimburse me and said it was my fault for driving it with it overheating. When it overheated with the needle hitting HOT the first time I had it towed to the body shop and the second time the temp gauge in my car fluctuated between normal and a little above normal temp. I got home in 10 minutes and halfway it became normal and I sat home in the driveway for 10 minutes at idle and the temp was normal, I even had it Drive to put it under some load, still nothing. Once the dealer looked at my aftermarket radiator they threw warranty out the window. Progressive was slow to respond to phone calls and Honda is looking into my damage further to help me with my claim and they are helping me to try to resolve this issue but I have a feeling I am eating this one.

They can't quote you correctly!

I had progressive for 5 years. Everything was fine until I bought a new car in 2005. I called with the vin and got a quote. Now I don't have the most impressive driving record, I have a tendency to speed way over the limit. When I called to get the quote for my new car. I had asked about abut my speeding tickets an they said that was the quote and I was good to go. Little did I know that was a lie. They had not reported my tickets until my renewal dates in march after I purchased my new car and it jumped by 150 dollars a month i called and they just told me tough cookies and that is how it works. So I switched to a different car insurance company and saving 2000.00 a year.

This company should not be aloud to do business.

Weakness:

Poor customer service! Unfair(below value) offers for cars their insured's hit! Poor offers to cover settlements.

I was hit HARD from behind while at a stop light by a Progressive insured, this totaled my car and injured me.

Progressive tried to burn me on what they would give me for my car that one of their insured totaled. More than 30% less than what alike cars were going for in my local car market. Lucky for my I have State Farm Insurance and they have a program to buy totaled cars from their insured. State Farm's offer was right on par with what alike car were selling for in my local market. Progressive would not bring their offer up even after I pointed out serval examples in local car ads and Blue Book quotes.

After many doctors bills, pain and suffering, missed work, missed planed travel, Progressive still has not stepped up to take care of me.
Its been over 1 1/2 years since being hit and Progressive still has not settled and have come at me with offers less than 1/2 of what I believe to be a very fair settlement. This leaves me two options, one is to take Progressive to court and the other is to go after their insured. I may have to do both?

We had two 4-wheelers insured through progressive. Four days after Christmas in 2006 they were both stolen out of our garage. Our claims rep. was great and treated us wonderful. We had a check in our hands in less than 2 weeks in an amount that was very fair and reasonable. Would definately reccomend this company.

Strength:

Good prices to insure yourself. They will screw the other guy, though, so I would not use them as my insurance company, even if they were the cheapest (which they are not).

Weakness:

Awful customer service. Would not pay out my claim after I got rear-ended (and property damaged) by one of their customers.

I don't know how this company treats their customers, but for the people their customers hit, they refuse to help. A few years ago I was rear-ended on the highway in stop and go traffic by a teenage girl who had a Progressive policy. Upon finding that damage had occured to my car, I began the claim process and their adjuster looked at my car. She claimed that only 200-300 dollars worth of damage had occured, and said that new problems I had been experiencing with the car following the accident were not accident related at all and were "preexisting" (which they were not). So I obtained a reputable third-party body shop estimate, which placed the damage somewhere around $1500.

I passed this information onto Progressive. The end result of everything was that I received absolutely nothing. The reason that they said I could not receive a claim was because they "couldn't get in contact" with the girl who hit me. They claim to have tried to call her and knock on her door, but since she decided to ignore them, they decided that I should not receive any repair compensation for having been hit by this irresponsible child.

Their customer service (and their customer, whom they should have dropped) was responsible for one of the more unfair/unjust episodes in my driving lifetime.

Weakness:

I just found out that the company gave me an inaccurate quote for my car insurance. When i called them and asked for it, i told them that i already got two traffic ticket couples of years ago and got the quote of $753.90. Now, i got a letter from them saying that my quote has been gone up for about $200 because they went over my driving history and found out the two tickets which made my rate gone up. I called them and asked why is that and took more than 20 mins to look for the recorded phone call conversation to verify the information i told them, which couldn't even find that. My point is i already told them that i got the two tickets and they knew about it and gave the quoted price including the tickets, so there are no reasons for them to be saying that my quote has been gone up for $200 because they ran the DMV record and found out about it, which means they didn't give the correct quote and inaccurate information, which is very important when doing a business. Don't you think so?

I used to think this is a good company for auto insurance since i saw their ads on TV but not anymore.

Weakness:

Very rude agents.

My truck was recently hit by a person with progressive auto insurance. Right off the bat they tried to pressure me into using their "concierge service" to repair my truck. I told them I felt more comfortable taking my truck to the Ford body shop in my town. After all, my truck is a Ford. About three weeks after my truck was first put in the shop, the Progressive agent I was dealing with called and informed me that they were no longer paying for my rental car. In fact, she told me that they had quit paying for it a week earlier and that either Ford or I would have to pay for the difference. Their reasoning was that Ford should of had my truck done by that time. That's fine, but why didn't they inform me of this decison in time for me to get a rental car through Ford or work out other arrangements? When I asked why she hadn't called me to inform me of this when they quit paying for the rental car, she wouldn't give me an answer. She kept saying very rudely, "If you would have gone through our body shop we wouldn't be going through this and your truck would be done." I told her that by law I have the right to pick any body shop I choose. She kept saying, "Well, that was your choice. You should have gone with our body shop." I then told the agent that Progressive and Ford should have to work out getting me another rental car and paying for the difference that was owed to the rental car compnay and I shouldn't have to deal with it. The agent told me that it was not Progressive's problem and I would have to work it out with Ford. I ended up getting a rental car through Ford. When my truck was finally done, I went to pick it up from the shop and Ford informed me that Progressive was supposed to have sent me a check to pay for the shop bill. Progressive hadn't sent me anything. Ford called Progressive and they told Ford that they sent me a check three weeks earlier. I never got the check. I was also supposed to get a check for a part on my truck they couldn't replace because Ford no longer makes it. I'm still waiting on that check.

Strength:

Weakness:

Very poor claims service that will treat you like the enemy if there's any chance you'll file on the Uninsured Motorists insurance you paid them for.

I have been in the business of insurance for more than 30 years, and I can honestly say I've never seen an insurance company work so hard to make a non-chargeable accident chargeable to their own customer!

I'm not sure if they're afraid of (and pre-defending against) the potential that I'll file an uninsured motorist claim against them (I was struck by an illegal alien who disappeared), or if they just like the additional charges they can accrue by making an accident chargeable. For whatever reason, they're taking advantage of me - and I'm a pro!

We'll see how it comes out in the end. Either I'll get tired of arguing with them and their idiotic excuses, or I'll hire an attorney. I'm sure they're hoping for the former.

The accident involved an illegal alien who took a left turn across my lane without looking. The police report is clear on this point. I smacked him broadside and was injured pretty badly.

Progressive made the accident chargeable to me, even though the state traffic code clearly states you can't turn left unless it's safe to do so. Progressive's excuses for a chargeable accident? Among many, there's "If you werent there, it wouldn't have happened" (I'm not kidding!) and "The other driver's right to turn left trumps your ownership of your lane" (I'm not making this up!). It's like talking to an idiot and an idiot's supervisor.

They are so determinded that they have refused to interview an independent witness I found for them. Hey, someone's got to do their job for them. That witness has answers that Progressive just doesn't want to hear.

Buy Progressive cheap and you'll pay the price!

EVERYTHING

Hello all,
Please excuse any grammatical or spelling errors as my head is spinning after the last 9 hours of phone conversations, fax’s etc . that have been going on. Let me start my story about my latest battle with Progressive Insurance with some background information.
I have been insured by Nationwide Insurance for the last 32 years with no lapse in coverage. At the beginning of this year Nationwide raised their rates and like any other consumer I researched better rates with different companies (Geico and unfortunately Progressive). This is where the whole problem began. Shortly after the quote I received a notice from the PA DMV that my insurance policy was canceled and I would have to turn in my tags as my registration will be revoked. Fortunately I was able to convince the DMV with copies of my Proof of Insurance cards that my coverage had never lapsed. PA DMV then sent me a letter to inform me that everything was OK. I contacted Progressive at that point and then found out the point of confusion (my son had a similar model of car and they somehow confused the VIN numbers). They said they would resolve the problem and remove me from their records.

Problem solved?? No way !!!

Let’s fast forward to Oct. 2, 2006. I still have not received my registration renewal form from the DMV and therefore try to apply for it online. To my surprise I find myself locked out of their system and a message to call the DMV. I call the DMV and find out that my tag has been suspended since the end of May (its Oct. 2 now). This was all due to a report that was sent to the DMV by Progressive Insurance that my insurance coverage had lapsed again (remember, I never stopped coverage with Nationwide). I never had coverage through Progressive in my lifetime, I only asked for a quote!!

Now I call Progressive again and ask to directly talk to a supervisor. I spoke with a Jim Stanford who researched the problem. After his research he stated that my son had selected the incorrect car from their dropdown menu as to what car to cover. (He has the same model and year of car as mine). I asked why my VIN would be listed on their site after I had requested my car be deleted from their records and Jim stated it was a matter of public record and there was nothing that can be done about it. He further informed me that I may need to hire a lawyer to resolve any problems that I may have. The problem was totally mine.

I contacted my son who assured me that after the first error with insurance he did select the correct VIN from the dropdown and to that point has paid $507 in insurance premiums on the selected car.(The insurance has been canceled now on that car since it is no longer in use and up for sale)

So, now here I sit until the PA DMV reviews all of my papers and reinstates my registration. I can’t drive at this time, all I can do is try to warn people about Progressive.
DO NOT EVEN TRY TO GET A QUOTE You may be sorry!!
