Strength:

As long as you don't get into an accident or file a claim ,okay I guess.

Weakness:

Rate increases for no reason. Poor quality customer service, and inaccurate information.

I have been with Nationwide Insurance since 1996 and have never had a problem until now. They sent a letter stating they are cancelling my insurance because of an accident my husband had a YEAR ago. Never have I been so frustrated!! They say just because we live in the same house they can cancel my insurance. The customer serivce people don't have a clue even if it came out of their computer screen and smacked them. We are pulling all of our policies out of that company now!!

Nationwide is terrible. I was originally with progressive and switched at the beginning of the year because Nationwide was able (supposed to) save me about $12 bucks a month. From day one, dealing with Nationwide has been nothing but a headache. They sent me vast amounts of confusing almost daily mailings. And after signing over to them, they then started requiring more and more information and paperwork from me after I had already did everything they asked. Every month they charged my checking account a different amount, and they overcharged me as well, actually charging me more than Progressive would have, had I stayed with them. Before they would insure my vehicle for collision, they forced me to get an inspection from a local agent, and then it was weeks before anyone could confirm that I was indeed covered. Calls to their customer service were useless. Everyone tells you something different and no one can answer your questions. Avoid Nationwide like the plague!!

Strength:

Great if you never file a claim.

Weakness:

Too many to name. Just read the review summary.

The company sucks. The prices are ok but beware!!! When you get in an accident they are impossible to deal with. I backed into a tree and filed my first and only claim since I had been with the company for 6 years. For a small dent in my bumper my insurance rates are almost double. To top it off the service is terrible. NO one can answer specific questions you have about your claim. Like for example how much you insurance rates will increase. Talking to their representatives is like talking to a brick wall. No one knows anything and you get shuffled from one helpless department to another. As you get passed along the representatives seem to get ruder and ruder. This was just a small accident. I can't imagine how awful it would be if You were involved in something serious.

I've been a Nationwide customer for 4 years, and just made my first claim. I rear-ended someone in an older model Mercedes (black book highest value 15,000). Clearly, my fault. Two months after the accident, my agent informs me that the other person's company paid him 25,000 in property damages, and I'm now responsible for the difference. They induced this panic without having received ANY documentation from the other company itemizing these charges, including photos of the vehicle, which was totalled. Too late. I live in the Beverly Hills area of LA...clearly the typical car value exceeds 15,000....appropriate coverage would be 50,000, as I was informed during this same call. Great advice. I don't mean to whine, but I do not believe Nationwide adequately explained my coverage. For $180/month comprehensive insurance, I assumed I had nothing to fear. I thought 15k in "property damage" coverage referred to property I damage other than the vehicle itself, such as personal effects or a fence. They SHOULD have upsold me to 50k in coverage for the extra $4.00/month, given my zip code. I'm still waiting on whether the other company will file an arbitration. But Nationwide basically said, get a lawyer, it's not their problem. True, it's my problem, but I hold them ethically responsible. I do not feel that they are working as my advocate in the claim, to defend me against this other insurance company, or in general, in the establishment of a sufficient policy.

Strength:

Gold medal ripoff

Weakness:

ignorant, unorganized, unprepared

When I first applied with Nationwide, my to-be agent quoted me a good rate for my policy. I gave the down payment and began the policy. Three months later I had noticed that Nationwide had not been deducting my payments from the account previously arranged. I called the office and They said, "Oh, your policy has been cancelled for about 58 days now." No notice in the mail, phone calls or any other attempt at informing me was attempted. Since they were so behind the power curve, the never notified PENDOT, who takes your registration away from you when you have no insurance. So like a fool, I went back to Nationwide and set up the policy again. This time I was given a false quote and when they began the deductions, they pulled out near twice the amount. I went back and they told me, "Oh yeah, your policy went up because you had no prior insurance." Immediately I began researching other companies, and got into an accident. They paid the claim, and raised my premium once more. Although they notified me the premium would be raised, they didn't tell me they would stop the deductions from my account once again and not inform me. When I realized another few months later that the deductions had stopped and my policy cancelled, they had notified PENDOT and my lienholder that I had no vehicle coverage. When I called them, they told me that my agent was no longer with the company and they couldn't explain why my policy cancelled.

Strength:

Fair, efficient claims handling. Best price of the major players for young, accident prone people.

Weakness:

I''m still paying $4000/yr for insurance. They did not send a new insurance card when I moved.

I''m 23 and I''ve had Nationwide for 14 months, ever since I''ve been on my own. I was paying about $1500 every six months on my $40,000 Audi. I totalled it after 8 months ($27,000 damage estimate). Nationwide took care of the claim fairly and efficiently. My rate went down a bit after 6 months, but shot up $500 at the one year renewal (post accident rate). I couldn''t find a major company with a better rate before or after the accident. I have tickets and only the above accident on my record.

Customer service is the worst!

Nationwide Insurance Company does not pay claims. On March 8, 2002 a driver insured by Nationwide drove his burning car into my private driveway, severely damaging two of my vehicles and garage. They now refuse to pay, claiming no liability.

1-800 number is good for accidents. Cheaper in some areas so check around and make sure that Nationwide is better priced.

Weakness:

Cust. Service. No flexibility on making payments. You have to pay when the date is and no sooner. Either Pay 6mos, monthly or 3mos. Heaven forbid you want to pay with what you have so that you have coverage---they wont take it and they cant tell you what your next bill is going to be.

Your rates go up all the TIME!! I could never budget because they could never tell me what it would be in 6 months. I thought I was paying for tow service for 3 years and that was not the case. I always questioned what I was getting.
