Sending me on a wild goose chase to find auto quotes without considering them into the final price.

I was recently hit by a driver heading the wrong way on the interstate. My car was totalled by the Nationwide insurance adjuster. The vehicle had almost every option that was availible at the time it was manufactured and I was the second owner, the first was my grandfather. I realize that it was an older vehicle but everything worked great and it ran flawlessly. I now have an adjuster that is offering me $1325 when NADA and Kelly Blue Book say that it is worth $1700-$2200. I was then told that those are not sources that Nationwide will look at. The adjuster told me that if I could get a 3 or 4 vehicles in the area that were comparable that she might be able to do somthing. I spent my time looking on the internet and found 5 of them that supported my claim for $1700. Any vehicle that had fewer miles was discounted. Other were thrown out as being too far away. Its ironic that She had shown me that she found 3 vehicles online also. 1 for 2200, 1500, and 800. How did she arrive at 1325. The average of those vehicles are higher than that. The real bite on this is that Nationwide is also my insurance carrier. Well, that will probably be changing in the ensuing weeks. Now as a result of a $400 discrepancy I am without a vehicle. If anyone has any good advice on how to proceed next I would love to hear it. I would feel terrible knowing that I caused and accident and the other person had to go through what I am going through right now.

No one returns calls, uses used parts in vehicle repairs, hidden fees.

I changed to Nationwide auto and homeowner's insurance because the condo that I purchased was insured by them. I thought it would make things easier if I needed to file a claim. Fortunately I haven't needed to file a claim on my real property. Let me start by saying that prior to Nationwide I was paying $750/yr for auto insurance. After 13 years of driving I finally had an accident 2 months after starting this policy...a $1500 fender bender. My rates jumped to over $3000/yr. The body shop kept complaining to me that the insurance company was taking their time getting them money, wouldn't allow them to order parts, and kept sending them used parts. I reported Nationwide to the MD Insurance Commissioner but to no avail. Needless to say I changed insurance companies. After I cancelled the policy they still deducted a payment from my checking account without telling me, causing me to be overdrawn on the account. Unfortunately, Nationwide hides in the fine print that if you cancel your policy before your "contract" is up you have to pay a "short rate fee" and a cancellation fee, and provide your refund based on what they claim your policy would have renewed at (which is incidentally lower than your current rates). So they take the money without asking because they know you won't pay. It took me a month for the refund. As a professional auditor I requested for them to send me documentation of my charges and payments for the term of the policy, otherwise I would never had known they were ripping me off. In MD they also claim to give you a 10% discount if you are a member of the MD Farm Bureau. Even with the membership fee it still saves you money...or so you think. I found that they had removed the discount from my policy and sent me so many letters citing changes that I wasn't able to keep up with them until I requested the documents at the end. If you currently have nationwide, do yourself a favor and, 2 weeks prior to the end of your current "contract" ,schedule your policy for cancellation at the last day of your policy. Find yourself a new agent (State Farm is cheaper in most cases).

Where do I start?

I manage an independant shop and have delt with Nationwide many times. We use CCC Pathways computer estimating wich is used by many of the larger insurance companies. In the past two years, Nationwide has cut our estimates by no less than 20%. Rarely do they pay for OE parts. The use mostly aftermarket and used parts when there is a need to replace and many times parts are repaired even when they need replacing. Nationwide is NOT on your side nor the side of the repair shop. I have spent a total of five hours on the phone tring to settle a single claim with them this week. The adjuster dosen't return calls and no one else in their office seems to care about taking care of their customers claim. I am done with them. When this claim is settled, we will no longer take Nationwide claims in this shop. Believe me, several other shops in this area feel the same way we do. I take in an average of twelve insurance jobs per week from all other insurance companies. Nationwide is by far the worst when it comes to our end of the business.

Strength:

Cheaper coverage when I lived in NC

Weakness:

They can not manage paperwork and they seem to have a disconnected chain to thier regoinal office

I am relieved to see I am not the only poor soul trapped in a nationwide insurance mishap. I have used their services for over two years and was in an accident the first, when the claims adjuster filed the paperwork nationwide thought it to be funny to file the same accident twice, it took me an entire year to get them to recognize I was only in one accident and refund my funds for an entire year of I paying a overpriced bill. This whole process left the local office in a state of total confusion and surprising enough denial, they did not want to at first believe me, I had to show them in their own records that the two accident reports were the same... When they finally copped with reality and credited my account they credited it as a late payment and did not adjust or send me a bill, they hadn't even bothered to take the initiative to keep track of the changes and inform me of policy changes, and basically ignored my status and let the policy expire, Then canceled me for nonpayment. When I tried to get insurance with another company they needed to have nationwide send a letter head stating that the second accident never occurred and that I was left out of the loop during the insurance cancellation, when I called for this letter it took me two days to persuade them to help me and all this time me without insurance. When I finally did persuade them, they made it out to be my fault. I finally sit here and having in my hands what might be the letter I need to perused a new insurance company to over look my laps and give me coverage at a reasonable rate, but it wasn't easy and if I hadn't the fortitude to see it through I would of been just another nationwide casualty. My recommendations is to stay as far away from nationwide as you possibly can, they can not manage paperwork and when there is an error they are anything but friendly. It might be cheaper in the short term to have their policy but detrimental to your insurance history in the long term.

Extremely high prices, lack of knowledge among customer service, lack of following up by agents, rude

I had gone to Nationwide in 2001 at the recommendation of a friend. At first they seemed friendly and well priced. Over the next two years I did not have a single accident nor ticket before or ever, yet my monthly rate climbed over $100.(or $1,200 per year). I had called my agent Lance Malcolm (904-298-2449) and spoken to agents there to try to get various rate cuts, such as a marriage discount etc. I always was told I'd be called back and never heard from anyone. This continued for a few months before I was fed up and switched companies to share Geico with my wife. Now I had paid my bill that covered the period of time from 10/04 until 11/03, I did not cancel until 11/24. I rightfully owed 11/04 until 11/24. In response nationwide sends me a bill for the 10/04 until 11/24, does not prorate it at all and includes a fee for canceling my policy for them. I call them to get an explaination of this. The woman I speak with at their center (434-237-7200 or 1-800-421-1444), gives me partial answers, saying "I think" and "I guess" as ways of explaining it to me. Then says they're charging me late fees for months I had already paid. It almost seems like they're just trying to tack on funds. I was also told they don't prorate monthly service, so if you cancel, except a full bill. Being a bit tired of dealing with a mushroom, I asked about making arrangements on the balance (over $200) due to a new baby and the like. I was so kindly advised "nationwide doesn't make arrangements, you can just deal with a collection agency". I have since written them via email but don't expect much in return. Nationwide is a completely deplorable company, high rates, bad service and completely unwilling to work with customers. I advise anyone to stay away fromt his company for ANY type of insurance, you will get burned in the end.

Strength:

None that I can see, really bad upper management as well.

Weakness:

Read the bulk of this review.

I am almost relieved to see all of the bad reviews that I have read about Nationwide. I feel part of the family. I have been going through quite a nightmare with this company as well. My girlfriend was rear ended by a Nationwide policy holder, the police report reflects that it was the other drivers complete fault. It took Nationwide 17 days to contact us after we tried over and over. After that contact, and being without a vehicle for weeks the Nationwide agent informs us that there is a problem with the claim. She goes on to say that the policy holder, of the car that hit us, signed a waiver stating that she would not let her husband drive the car. Well, you guessed it, she let him drive her car with her permission. How do I know that permission was granted? She was in the car with him at the time of the crash. Nationwide's slant on it is that they are not liable do to the fact that she signed this waiver. My slant on it is that the contract became null and void when she got in the car with him. I feel that this waiver was set up to cover their ass, and was not in best interest to the customer or any other driver in the path of this car. I also partly agree with Nationwide that they should not be the party to pay, but the policy holder should pay. I feel that this waiver was an agreement between company and client and if that contract is broken, then the client should have to pay. My girlfriend was not affected when this waiver was originally signed, so why is she affected now. I feel that Nationwide should pay for the repairs, and chase the policy holder for the money to pay them back. Why should I chase the policy holder for funds, she didn't have a contract with me? I will not relent on this until I find justice. I have also gone to the local media with the story. If they show interest, I am going to expose this company for their bad customer service and their waivers that are put in place to cover their own asses and not care a bit about their customers or innocent bystanders. Feel free to contact me via email at joemrf@aol.com if you wish to share your story with the media, if they chose to pick it up. Thank you.

Response Time, Customer Service, Quality, Educated Representatives

I was rear-ended by a NationWide customer. NationWide took 3.5 weeks to start processing my claim after accepting liability. Another 1.5 weeks and they still had not made payment on the claim. I went ahead and took vehicle to my preferred shop and picked up a rental. They then refused to cover full amount of rental, and now have cut rental payment off completely - even when my car will be in the shop another week because they are waiting on NationWide's supplement for repairs.

I have been an agent for Nationwide for 30 years and frankly I am ashamed at the level of service the reviewers seem to have gotten. I'm not trying to sell anyone anything other than the idea that you deserved better and you did not get it. I work hard for my clients and advocate for their interest with every tool at my disposal...your experiences only serve to add to my determination to see that my clients get the best service I can provide.

They are consistent in messing up your account, never returning phone calls, and threatening to cancel your policy because of your mistakes.

Weakness:

Customer care and pretty much everything else.

I was set up with Nationwide because my auto dealer referred me to them. Like some reviews I've read here, I see that I'm not the only one who has had problems with them. In the very beginning I was getting double billed, then they said that if I didn't come in and bring my account up to date then my policy would be canceled. For mistakes they were aware that they made!!! I continued using them for about a year and a half(a mistake I recognize completely as my own) and almost every month they were able to mess up my account. I finally left and have been using AAA, of which I have had nothing but smooth sailing with(knock on wood). About two months ago I figured out that a charge they made to bring my account to "good standing" which was about $10 was done three times and two of the times somehow they charged my card aobut $700. I called them, they passed my complaint to home quarters and now two months later I haven't heard a thing, after about 5 calls to check the status. Even the representative at AAA told me she used Nationwide before working there and told me that they were bad and have had problems with them as well. DON'T use Nationwide...they are not by your side.

NATIOWIDE DOES NOT APPRECIATE THEIR CUSTOMERS! I HAD THEM THE FIRST TIME. I BACKED INTO MY GARAGE. THE AGENT WAS UNBEARABLE, BUT THEY DID GET IT FIXED IN A HURRY. THEY RAISED MY RATES AND I LEFT. I CAME BACK A YEAR LATER BECAUSE OF A GREAT QUOTE. HOWEVER, THEY JACKED MY PREMIUM BACK UP IN NO TIME. I STUCK IT OUT. NOW THEY DROP ME BECAUSE I DID NOT COMPLETE A SURVEY APPROPRIATLY. ALL THEY HAD TO DO WAS CALL ME TO FORWARD THE REGISTRATION INFORMATION ON MY TWO VEHICLES. WHAT A BUNCH OF CRAP. I GUESS THEY DID ME A FAVOR!
