Strength:

Knows how to jack up high prices on your premium.

Weakness:

Can not explain why they do what when they had the bogus charges on your account.

LM contacted me and told me they were dropping me because my son was a high risk. How can that be.. We filed two claims, the Blazer was legally parked and someone back into it in the school parking lot and hit (hit and run) and some one vandalized the car in our yard. I filed an additional claim on a broken windshield on my 2000 Corolla. LM, give me a break. My family did not cause any of these accidents and you wanted to drop me? You did my neighbor the opposite way. Her son lost his driver license for 3 months and you told her you could not drop her off. I told her to drop you guys. You can't make her keep a driver on the policy if he has no need to have coverage. LM is a big ripoff. But God have me a blessing out of this mess. I went with AAA Insurance and went from a $3900 policy for 3 cars to $2300 with AAA with the same coverage. The insurance agent could not believe that LM was ripping me off that much. An I have a $1000 deductible on my Lexus and $500 each on my other two cars and still I had a premium of $3900 a year. Thanks God for the Blessing. I found out while trying to switch over to AAA that the AAA agent found that LM charged my son and his friend for an accident where the driver hit the parked car and my son was in the car too. My son showed the police officer his licenses as ID and someone how, LM charged both young men for the accident. How can they charge my son who was a passenger. To this day, I have not recieved an answer on this. Never again will I use LM for my auto or home inscurance. I advise everyone to drop these clowns and go with AAA Insurance in your area if they offer auto/home insurance. Or compare shop. If you haven't checked your policy in a while, compare with other companies. I have discoverd that it is a good idea to change companies every 3 years. Seems like you get a better deal on coverage.

Strength:

In my opinion, decepted practices. Insurance with them is like legalized fraud.

Weakness:

Dealing with them

I WAS with them for 28 years but finally after the last 3 years decided to switch. After I switch I found the reason I was getting such high rate quotes from other companies. Answer: Liberty Mutual was stating all my accidents as my fault even though they didn't pay a dime. Actually there was only one accident as my fault. For example: Listed as my fault was when my car was damaged WHILE PARKED in a legal parking shop at a movie theather. HMMMM! Maybe to keep me as a customer??? I found this out after working with an agent that review my insurance file. So the next time you go for quotes, it may be wise to check the insurance record. I AM EXTREMELY HAPPY GETTING RID OF LIBERTY MUTUAL. Working with their agents in Naperville, IL. was more then worthless even after reporting this to the main office in Boston.

Strength:

Used to be reasonable and efficient

Weakness:

You can never get the same person on the phone

I have had Libety mutual for l9 years. No accidents, no tickers and have the highest credit rating. When my insurance was up for renewal it went up $350. Why, after 3 phones calls, the first two wouldnt answer any of my questions, the answer was I did not own a home. I rent. What kind of sense does that make. That is totally discriminatory. Why does not owning a home make your insurance go up. Something has to be done in nj.

My insurance was $2,200 for a 1996 ford explorer and a 2001 mustang in 2002. Much to my surprise when my renewal statement arrived in my mailbox my insurance was now 42% higher $3,124. I contacted LM and they had no explanation.

Strength:

Low Rates...for now

Weakness:

Terrible Customer Service in the claim department. Very hard to get the person you want to talk to on the phone. Slow to pay simple claims.

They are great...until you have a claim. I had a single car accident with no injuries at the end of May 2003. It is now the beginning of July and the shop that fixed my car still hasn't received a check from the insurance company. First, it took them over a week to get an adjustor to the shop to see my car. And, before they even sent an adjustor, they left me two messages trying to persuade me to have my car towed to one of their "preferred" shops. It is one thing to suggest a shop if I don't know where to go to have my car fixed, but to ask me to tow my car to another shop after I have already told them I want to have my car fixed at the shop it is at is outrageous, not to mention borderline illegal. Three business days after the adjustor came, I had a message from the claims person wondering why I still needed my rental car. I guess she didn't realize that it takes more than three days to take the car apart, order and receive parts, install the parts, and repaint the car. The next day I had a message asking me the name, address, and phone number of the shop where my car was being fixed. I gave them this information when I filed the claim. Not to mention the fact that the claims person had been in contact with the shop already, so she obviously knew the phone number. I tried calling the claims person back several times and left a few messages, but my calls were never returned. Almost two weeks ago, my car was finished. Luckily, the shop owner knew me well, otherwise I might still be waiting to get my car back. (It pays to have a father and uncle who own a body shop.) I called the claims person the day that I got my car back to ask about the check. I was told that the check couldn't be printed because they had entered the shop's information incorrectly in their system and that they might be able to issue it tomorrow. I told the claims person to contact me the next day to let me know whether or not it had been issued. She did not. So, I called her back again but couldn't get through to her. Someone else in her office supposedly looked up my account and said that the check was issued the day before. So, we waited 5 business days and the check never showed up. I called back again and talked to the same person I talked to the week before. Only now she told me that the check hadn't been issued yet. The reason was that the shop's information was entered incorrectly. Hmm, where had I heard that before. This time, the lady told me that she would make sure that the check was issued that day. That was about 4 days ago. Hopefully the check will come soon.

Had been with State Farm for 8 years. Have a 93 Accord. Got a 93 Civic and State Farm wanted to raise the premium from 1200/yr to 2000/yr. My college alumni association previously sent me junk mail about Liberty Mutual group rates, so I called them. Same coverage as State Farm but 1400/yr for BOTH cars. I said goodbye to State Farm. I filed one claim with LM (my car hit while parked legally) and it was a breeze. Filed on line. They called and told me what body shop to visit for estimate. Then they sent me a check. No problems. After first year, premiums went up ~14/month, but from what I hear, most insurance company's premiums have gone up a little.

Strength:

Fast claim at that particular office, reasonable rates, telephone customer service people seem to work well.

Weakness:

No consistent quality across the agent network. Many times the local office will forward their phones to the main 800 number, so I am not sure if I am talking to my agents office or a phone operator unless I remember to ask.

My family has had Liberty Mutual for nine years on both home and auto. There are two different companies to deal with. One is the agency group that has local offices and does most of the policy selling. These offices vary in ability quite a bit. My first agent was a very nice guy who helped my wife and I actually move into our first home. He would carry boxes and fill out applications during breaks. He was compotent, patient, and helped explain everything until we understood it. We moved states and the next agency office had 3 office workers barely out of high school and not licensed to talk about insurance, only fill out apps and have agent call me. It was very hard to accomplish much there. The second company is the actual idemnity company that adjusts claims. I have had one auto claim. A large tree broke during a storm and part fell on my truck. My agent helped me figure out if it was an auto or home claim (it was an auto) and asked if I was able to drive the car safely. Since it was only dented and scratched, he suggested I go to the drive through claim adjuster's garage, which was attached to a large sales office. I made an appointment, showed up on time, the adjsuter was about 15 minutes behind schedule. He worked on a small handheld device took 5 or 6 pictures. He showed me the damage he saw and asked if there was any more, or if I had any questions. He then loaded the info in his computer, and told me the suggested value. The value met at least two quotes I had already received. He asked if I would accept that as settlement, I said yes, he printed out a check and asked me to sign the settlement. Very simple to deal with. No noticable changes, seems normal to inflation. No accidents, just the one claim and one speeding ticket each for me and my wife.

Weakness:

Everything.

I've been with Liberty Mutual for around 6 years. My wife and I have a perfect driving record..no accidents no tickets. This year when my policy was up for renewal I was in for a rude surprise. My premium was up by $800. I've lived in th same house for the past 6 years so its not as if anything changed. Liberty Mutual would not give any reason other than the "tiers have changed" I cancelled my policy with them.

Dishonest company, attracts customers with low rates, didn't pay for our stolen car or rental car while we searched for an new car.

Out whole family have used them for over 8 years but have not filed any claims. Once our car was stolen in 1997 their claims department refused to honor their obligation and gave us the run-around. Switched to State Farm immediately.

We consider ourselves pretty good drivers. As claims free customers of a Liberty Mutual for 10 years, our insurance was under $1000 per car. Enter the dark side. In the early fall, my wife slid into a car who applied their brakes too fast in icy winter conditions. No real damage to either car, but At Fault claim number one was recorded because the other driver made a claim to their insurance company. Strike number two happened to myself while stopped at an intersection turning left. School zone, impatient racing motorcycle rips through intersection, dumps bike, bike and rider slide into my bumper. Although according to witnesses, the biker was speeding, careless and out of control; the guy making the left turn is at fault. At Fault claim number two. The biker makes a personal injury claim and is awarded $27,000 for his carelessness. Ok, I am thinking that these events will have no impact on our insurance because of our excellent prior history. Life goes on. Spring of 2003, my wife decides to trade up to a new car. The deal is done, the car is here. The man will take care of the insurance, no big deal, just a call to supply some information and the transition will be complete. Shock treatment. While phoning to switch vehicals, I am informed that our insurance has been cancelled. Not surcharged, but outright cancelled. In fact, it has been cancelled for a few days! They inform me that a registered letter had been sent out, but it had not been picked up. No discussion, no opportunity at resolution, no backup phone call. If you have two At Fault claims, your insurance can be dropped. The new car is still ready for pickup. Need insurance. Upon discussion with representatives, I realize that their hands are completely tied, efforts at diplomancy offer no chance of re-instatement. Despite our good records , your insurance company will longer assume our risk. I would think that their would be some consideration for our 10 years of no claims and the fact that we also have had our home insurance through your company during this period. Obviously, we must cancel our home insurance based on the treatment we have been given for our auto policies. Yours, T.J. Young
