very loud and ACCURATE bass. Won numerous competitions. I've blown 2 different SPL160's...now using (2) SPL170's. I just built a new BANDPASS box w/ almost 8 cubic ft using (4) 11"x4.25" ports. Hooked buddies amp up to them this past weekend(about 1kwatt)...needed way more power. bought a MMATSD300HC this week...install this weekend....stay tuned...
i best thing i like about their SPL line is you can put then in a small box and run a lot of power to them and they'll shake your brain.

Weakness:

power handling...i think they should redesign these to compete with the STROKERS AND JUGGERNAUTS...if they dont...i'll switch to another brand.

for the price?? uhhh... i wouldn't pay over $300 for a spl170 and nothing over 200 for a spl160....i would recommend them to anyone that wants good & loud bass...run them in a small box with a lot of power.
IF YOUR LOOKING TO COMPETE(AND WIN FIRST)...FIND ANOTHER SUB.

but they're still damn good subs.

i've used the spl160's for about a year...the 170's are pretty much the same thing but if your going to be running over 500 watts a sub...i'd recommend the 170's. whenever i upgraded to them....i have yet blown a sub.

Model Reviewed: 2000 SPL 12

Strength:

Nice clean bass. Hits the low end, my favorite, very hard. I've got 2 SPL 12's and I love them.

Weakness:

The only weakness is that there is no more room to put more and I don't have the money to buy more anyhow.

Best deal you can probably get anywhere. The guy I bought them from still has a pair that he used once for a good deal on yahoo auctions. I got mine for a total of $170, because it was $20 shipping. I hardly even turn up the volume on my head unit (Alpine 7864) and it bumps. The highest I have put the volume yet is 20 and people love it, everyone looks. Now looking into buying SPL components and 6x9's because I am so impressed with my 12's.

JL 12W1- not even close older pair of spl 12's- hit nice and hard but nowhere near as good and efficient

Strength:

Loud, clean, tight, THROBBING bass! Never had a single sub that performs like this one :)

Weakness:

That I don't have a high current amp and 2 more of these puppies

Can't say enough good stuff about this ROCKIN' sub! If you take your music seriously and aren't all about SPL (although in the right box the EXACT will pound the living bejezus out of the SPL series), don't hesitate to buy this fine subwoofer. Hard to find but well worth the extra effort!!

LOUD! High spl, little distortion

Weakness:

Going deaf, Ticks neighbors off

I bought 2 soundstream spl12's used and they are awsome! They are rated at 300 watts a piece but I am pushing them With a US amp 810 watts. They are each handling 405 watts a piece no problem with no distortion. I recommend these subs to anyone who wants bone shaking bass!

The SPL15 is Loud, clean and can handle anything Give it. Does'nt need alot of power.

Weakness:

none

shooting a pair of these backwards in my hatch really does get me shaking. I mean not just the rear view mirrors or the hairs on the back of my neck...my vision. Using a kick-arse Poineer gm-x922 amp to power the 1-ohm load to do it. These Subs do take up alot of room especially for a ported box, This is why i've used a sealed box which also creates a tighter bass sound.

Strength:

Nice clean bass. Hits the low end, my favorite, very hard. I've got 2 SPL 12's and I love them.

Weakness:

Can get a little sloppy on the low stuff if your box isn't tuned right.

I would definately reccomend these subs. I paid 210 a piece for them and are well worth it. Mine are pushed by a Lanzar Opti-Drive 200.2 that puts out close to 400 watts bridged into 4 ohms. I'm still breaking them in, but I plan to compete with them. The roll off is very nice. Its not extremely punchy like some subs and yet it isn't slow like a comp vr for example. Its very musical and can and does play very loud. I'm still toying with mine and don't have it perfect yet. But it still sounds awesome. total system price was just over 1,000.

Strength:

loud. didnt take too much power to get it that way either. has excellent roll off/

Weakness:

a little sloppy for some deeper bass and not that punchy

I got a cheap ass deal ($200 for two in a box) so I cant complain. they are great. I still like kicker comp VRs better. usually SPLs sell for around 220 and VRs are only 135 or so.

Similar Products Used:

kicker comp vr, earthquake magma, jl w0, soundstream rubicon. It kills most of these in SPL (hence the name) but comp vrs reign louder and cheaper
