Model Reviewed: 8"

Strength:

Good bass reproduction throughout the low frequency ranges. Performs well with much less wattage than the dx series and they cost a fraction as well.

Weakness:

Since I have a pair of 8's they don't quite hit the lows like some people might be after.

For $60 a piece I could not beat these 8" EX's. They perform well in a small sealed enclosure as well as larger ported boxes. I can't complain at all. Polk makes excellent products and backs them up, what else can I say.

Compares favorably with MTX and Infinity in their price class.

Model Reviewed: EX II 12"

Strength:

These subs hit hard and don't stop. They sound great with all kinds of music. I listen to heavy metal and rap, and they thump to everything I shell out to them. The SQ is awesome-the best i've heard, and so is the SPL.

Weakness:

I wished they moved some more air than they do. Infinity References move a little more than twice as much, and I would love to hear what they would sound like in my car.

I have 200 rms. to each 12", and they thump hardcore. I have them in a bandpass box, and I love the smooth sound they make. They are only rated at 150rms each, but I have had no problems. The sound quality is unbelievable for the price. I have the bass on my deck all the way off, and they hit like crazy. I also only have a 6dB bass boost on my amp, with my gains turned up 1/4 of the way, and it's just as loud as all of my friends, who have massive systems. I would also like to say that I dislike Sony decks. Kenwood eXelon's are the only way to go. I hate my cd player. I would also love to know how many dB I hit with them, so How Can I Find Out???

I have used MTX 3000 12"'s, and my polks are much better. Louder, lower, and much better SQ.

Strength:

Wow, this sub does sound sweet. I skip a heart beat everytime it bangs (well, not really because I'd be dead by now). But, great price (buy one get one) and nice wattage handling.

Weakness:

SOUND QUALITY: none
LOOK: should have made it a little more appealing (but I am not the little sissy with a pretty product).

Get it from Circuit City when they have their buy one get one and sell the other one or give it to a friend and make their day. Some people in this world don't have subs in this car, what's the world coming to.

Powered by my AutoTek 5 channel with BassThrust and does that thing make it rock.

Strength:

Reliability, Price, Smooth hits

Weakness:

Doesn't hit hard

I got 2 Polk EX 10" subs and they'r a great entry-level or mid-ranged subwoofer. Find these 2 for 1 at Circuit City, it's WORTH IT! Hit very smoothly, much smoother than my friend's Bazooka 12"s, they just don't hit as hard. Great deal for good sounding, seat rumbling bass. Won't shatter any glass but sounds AWESOME for what you pay.

Bazookas at the same wattage hit harder but aren't as smooth

Strength:

Smooth, musical bass. Can play loud when pushed, and handles a good amount of power. (I believe a 10" will take 300 watts.) Goes real deep. Inexpensive yet extremely high quality bass.

Weakness:

Is being too smooth a weakness?

I got these on a 2 for 1 special at Circuit City last summer, which worked out to about $60 each. I went with 10" subs 'cause I thought I wanted a smoother sounding bass rather than a punchy, rattling bass. I had a JBL 12" ported tube before, which sounded good, but it was very focused on certain frequencies and would play overly loud on a few specific notes, which I found annoying. So I got these Polks, sold one to a friend, and have been using a single 10" EX in a sealed box for almost a year. Again, the sound is very smooth and musical. Even for hard rock/heavy metal, this sub doesn't really get boomy unless you really crank it up really loud. If you like techno music and the like, it'll shake your mirrors with no problem, but even playing music like the Chemical Bros. or Prodigy from this sub I think it comes out "too" smooth. I'm thinking I should have gotten a 12", or I just need to find a way to port my truck box...
Overall I think it's one hell of a subwoofer- it can play loud without trauma, it's very smooth and musical, and just plain sounds great. For the price, you can't beat it, and it'll beat other subs that are more expensive than it, too. I give it 4 stars overall 'cause it isn't 100% perfect- I've heard (much more expensive) subs that do sound better.

Strength:

Price Price Price! For $55 a pop how can you go wrong?
Good deep bass, well balanced, do not break up or bottom out.

Weakness:

Right now I really can't list a weakness, the only thing at all is I wish they were a little "punchier".

Well, Polk subs were never really on my list to check out, but Circuit City was running a sale. The 12" subs were $110, and buy one get one free! At that price I had too check them out! I am VERY impressed with these subs, they are NOT a bargain basement sub, they are a very well balanced and musical sounding sub. A lot of 12's I have heard are too "boomy", but these sound very nice. I have these subs in an MTX sealed box, the guys at Circuit City tried to push me into a bandpass, but I just don't like those. They perform very well in the sealed enclosure. The subs I replaced were 3 worn out 10" MTX 3000 series in a sealed box running at 450 watts mono, the 2 12 inch Polk's have 150 watts each, and go lower, louder, and sound much nicer. The 10"s had a little more "punch" to them, but that is to be expected.

Similar Products Used:

3 10" MTX 3000's in a sealed box- I used this box for almost 5 years, and it has been a very good performer. Lately though they have been breaking up, getting more "boomy" and have developed a little rattle...but they had hard lives! I can't do a fair compare because of these subs not being at 100% when I got my new ones.

Model Reviewed: EX12

Strength:

Poly cone woofer, rubber surround, small chamber, great price, very efficient.

Weakness:

The linear excursion is only 0.17", but who cares when they sound awesome, hit hard, and play louder than what I had.

Inexpensive sub that sounds good with all types of music. I replaced two 12" Punch XLCs with two EX12s and I am very pleased. Although the linear excursion of the Polk subs is about half the excursion of the RFs, these subs hit hard. The Polk subs also hit lower frequencies than the RFs. The RFs do move more air, but the Polks have a 2" voice coil (same as XLCs) with a bigger magnet, and they make might headlights dim....the XLCs didn't even with everything else in my system the same. The Polks are more efficient so they play louder. Driving the two EX12s with a RF 400a4 (200Wx2 bridged) gave me a 3dB increase in bass volume (measured with noise meter with treble turned off). The Polks sound good with hard rock, rap, alternative, and even country (RF sound quality is poor with country).

Similar Products Used:

Better than two RF XLCs. Better overall sound than friends' JL 12W0s and MTX 6000s.

Strength:

sound quality, small enclosure, goes low

Weakness:

My trunk starts to rattle at moderate volumes.

I bought a pair of the 12" subs to get some bass in the car. The JBL 6x9's were good but they distorted too easily. I went to Circuit City and listened to these subs. They were very clear and went low compared to other subs in the price range. (JL's W6's are clearer and handle twice the amount of power but for 4-5 times the price). I hooked them up to a US Acoustics USX2150 amp and they sound great in a sealed box! They sound good with rap, techno, pop, and some rock. Some rock doesn't sound right. It could be the gain and bass settings on the amp. I got a great deal on these subs (2 for $130 at Crutchfield, Circuit City had the same deal at the time but I trust crutchfield more than Circuit City). This series of subwoofers has been discontinued so they are cheap.

Overall these are excellent subs for the price. If you can get a deal like buy 1 get one free, then get them. You won't be disappointed. Unless like bass that completely drones out your music.

Strength:

Sound quality, Price, Deep bass, I would definitely buy these again!!

Weakness:

They break if you drop them?? I haven't found anything wrong with them.

I had bought 2-12" Polk EX-II series subs at Circuit city, and I am impressed with the sound quality!! I listened to all of the subs they had, and I didn't see any that had these beat. I also was looking other places for subs too. I listened to Rockford's (those were ok), Orion (those are nice and expensive), Kenwood's (those were nice too), but none of them beat these subs. They hit like you wouldn't believe! The cost was real cheap (buy 1 get 1), they play the real low bass that I like. I have them hooked up to a Kenwood amp 600w bridged. CAUTION: May blurr vision, make ears rattle, pieces might fall off car...and dont plan to use mirrors!

Haven't compaired with any others in my car, but I have heard other peoples cars, and I think mine is one of the best!
