Toyota Tundra Trucks | Vans

DESCRIPTION

Available in Regular cab, Double Cab and CrewMax styles, the Tundra also features three bed lengths, three engines, three wheelbases and a choice of 4X2 or 4X4 configurations.

The Tundra offers three engines and three cab sizes. Handling is relatively responsive, but the ride with the TRD package is stiff. The 5.7-liter V8 is very powerful. The tailgate is easy to raise and lower. A new 4.6-liter V8 replaced the old 4.7-liter for 2010.

Cost Reputation Won''t care if it gets torn up. Great reason to buy something else.

Weakness:

Gas Mileage Paint or rather lack of Transmission Dealership Reputation is on the downside of the bell curve.

Decent truck, but not top dog. I had a 1979 Trans AM with a 400 engine that got better gas mileage than this 3.4 liter Middle East Supporter. I like the ride but it''s loud inside. I had some tree sap on the paint one day and when I rubbed it off, the primer showed through - paint must be real thin. I have about 9000 miles on it now with no major problems. I won''t take it to the dealer for maintenance, because the first time I went in they didn''t want to fulfil their "we-owe" list. I don''t trust them. If I can''t fix the problem, I''ll take it to a trusted auto shop. There in a real bind at the dealership too. There offering "Tires for Life" but you have to have the car maintained at their facility. My transmission thumps when stopping sometimes and I''ve been told they all do it and Toyota would like to know why. It''s a good to get around town truck, but I wouldn''t like it for a road truck.

Strength:

I''ve had this truck for a year and a half now and overall it''s a good reliable truck (mechanically). Good power, rides smooth, leather is comfortable, love the CD changer, handles well, it''s was pretty much what I expected from a Toyota. Love it will lease another one when the time comes. I highly recommend this truck over a Ford, Chevy, and Dodge for a half ton.

Weakness:

I have a rattle in the back that the dealer can''t seen to find I''ve taken it in five times now for the problem, now I just turn the radio up. The driver side door light broke replaced under warranty. Replace the driver side mirror twice because of stress fractures relaced by warranty, from paint isn''t very durable, I use lots of touch up paint. 2000 was the first year for it so I kind of expected some problems with a new model, hopefully now Toyota has worked out the bugs.

Weakness:

Weak retractors for the seatbelts. I can''t count how many times I''ve shut the buckle or belt in the door. Not REALLY a weakness (it''s obvious with a test drive), but the Tundra wasn''t meant for backseat commuters. I like it because I can haul up to 3 extra passengers if necessary, but I''d feel sorry for them on any long trip.

The car-like steering/ride, good brakes, aesthetics, and power (v-8), made me fall in love with this truck the first time I test drove it. The Tundra is definitely more than just ''a step'' above the Tacoma.

Transimission jolts, lack of features, quality

There is a serious transimission problem with these trucks. PLEASE CHECK THIS OUT BEFORE BUYING. I have read other reviews that talk about rough acceleration or transimission jolting, and I experience very violent jolts especially after coasting from 20+ MPH down to 10, which I frequently do in rush hour driving. I fully expect to have to replace the transmission, and am glad I bought the extended warranty. Have had many other quality related problems which surprise me in a brand with such a high reputation. These include no less than 4 different noises in the dashboard, the most frequent of which the dealer has been able to isolate and fix. The other 3 I have had to learn to live with, and can only do so by saying "it''s just a truck" which sucks given the amount I paid for this Limited model. There is also a plastic piece on the drivers seat post that is poorly attached and which I constantly kick off when exiting the truck. I got tired of that one pretty quick and just stopped putting it back on. Other quality/usability issues include : an arm rest on the door which is hard as a rock, stereo lights that are unreadable in sunny conditions, door buzzing caused by their top of the line stereo at moderate volumes, no standard remote door entry system (my wife''s 5 yr old, 15K Saturn has it), no lights on the door lock making entry in dark conditions very difficult (in fact no lights turn on until the door is unlocked), visors that nearly block my view when deployed (I am 6''3" and have the leather bucket seats), no passenger power seat (on leather buckets), an extremely soft gas pedal making it hard to relax my right leg (this sounds weird, but it forces me to keep my muscles tensed which in long drives is very uncomfortable), cup holder inserts to fit smaller cups but invariably end up sticking to the cups.

OVERALL EXCELLENT PRODUCT TOP TO BOTTOM. STRICT GM GUY BEFORE NOW 5 GM VEHICLES. DECIDED TO TRY SOMETHING ELSE. VERY IMPRESSED WITH TOYOTA QUALITY, GM ISN''T AT THIS LEVEL. I''M 6''3" AND I WOULD SAY ANYONE TALLER WOULDN''T FIT COMFORTABLY. REALIZING NOW THAT THIS IS A PERFECT HYBRID BETWEEN CAR,TRUCK AND SUV. IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A WORK TRUCK GO FORD SUPER DUTY OR GM HEAVY DUTY BUT A GREAT ALL AROUND TRUCK COMMUTING,HAULING, OR OFF-ROAD FISHING TRIPS IT DOESN''T GET ANY BETTER. I HAVE A FRIEND WITH A 2000 TUNDRA HE HAS MORE PROBLEM SYMPTOMS THAN MY 2001. CHANGED TO SYNTHETIC OIL AND GETTING BETTER MILEAGE AND RUNNING COOLER I DROVE THEM ALL BEFORE BUYING ONE. Vehicle vibration Brake system

I bought this truck Feb. 28, 2001 because my family outgrew my ''93 Xtracab 4x4 (new baby with carseat), and really didn''t consider any other brands after my incredibly good experience with the old Toyota. HOWEVER, from the day I drove this truck home, I noticed an odd, faint vibration that seemed to intensify during normal braking. In the past year, I''ve had 5 tire balance jobs, warped front rotors replaced at 4000 mi., out of round rear drums replaced at 4000 & 8000 mi., and at 10,000 mi now, think the drums are bad again. The dealer, after replacing the brakes, re-aligning the front end, and who knows what else they did (all under warranty, thank god), determined it was a problem with the tires. I have put a different set of rims & tires on to test their theory, and the vehicle still has vibration and brake shudder. Some of the official service dept. solutions have been "use the parking brake", "don''t use the parking brake - it may press the drums out of round", "downshift rather than using the brakes to stop", "don''t use the brakes as much", "never seen this problem before", etc. Well, this problem I am experiencing seems to be haunting Tundra drivers around the country (check out some of the internet Tundra clubs). I can honestly say that I am extremely dissapointed with my Tundra, as it has not measured up to the quality standard I have come to expect from my previous experiences with excellent Toyota products, which were far better than experiences with the "big 3" products. Adding to my frustration is Toyota''s inability to come up with a permanent solution to this seemingly common problem. I can''t bring myself to buy my wife the Sequoia Limited 4x4 (at $46K) until I know my Tundra can be fixed for good.

Too Good

Best Truck on the Market! I have the TRD version. I pull a 21 foot camper with no problems. I''ve had the truck in the mud and the dirt, awesome. I''ve also seen the frame demonstration between the Tundra and the Chevy/ Fords. The Tundra''s Frame is way more solid. No twisting or giving. This helps keep the vehicle quiet. My friend has a 01 Z71, we did a little light to light race. Poor guy never even got to see the side of my truck, just the tailgate. Adding the flowmaster exhaust system increases horse power by 7-10 percent! I''ve had all the different Trucks and nothing rides smoother than the Tundra. I''ll put it up against any other Truck. I really use my trucks and I have not had the brake problems that others have had. Some people complain about the maintenance costs. It''s not that bad and it''s worth it to take care of a superior vehicle that will last two to three times longer than most domestic trucks.

V8 power with V6 mileage. 4 doors. Toyota reliability history. Dual bench seats. Door handle placement. Towing capacity. 16" wheels.

Weakness:

Expensive. Short bed is only option.

Excellent vehicle. Power is great. Milage is where it is advertised (17 hwy). I have 4 kids 13 and under who fit in nicely. My wife (5''10") has sat in the back with the 2 oldest kids with no complaints. Very smooth ride. The bed would be nicer at 8 foot, but the shorter wheelbase is a pleasure around town. I bought a full size deep cross tool box from Sears which fits perfect. I love the fact that the door handles are on the outside and inside. No smashed little fingers going for the hidden handles in the doorjam as in some of the other big 4 door trucks. Would prefer the manual 4X4 shift, but the electric button seems to work fine. The 7200 pound towing capacity is a big plus. Went looking for the best 4X4 on the market (Tacoma) and came home with an even better truck.
