Tacoma X-cab V6 4wd TRD
Strength:
Faster than most trucks. I like the stiff suspension it can handle stuff without feeling like the truck might break. The lockout is awsome, I used it to pull my snowmobile up a hill, it would go at all without it. Outperformes my wifes jeep in the snow. The handling inspires confidence.
Weakness:
Does not command the respect of idiot co-workers. This truck is actually built in California! This is by far the best vehicle I have ever owned. I've had this truck 3 1/2years-85000 miles and have changed brake pads and tires, that's it! No funny noises no warning ligts nothing. I have to sell it because of school but I will find an older one for now. When I make some money again I can't waint to get another TRD. It would be hard to consider anything else. Similar Products Used: I've had two domestic vehicles, the motor blew on one and the tranny on the other. My dad has a Dodge Ram with a 360 and my truck is way faster. The Tacoma is much more agile and makes the Dodge feel big and clumbsy. He has been through a couple trannys! Supprisingly I like my wife's Jeep. It is our second one with no troubles.(Cherokee Sport) |

Toyota Tacoma 4X4
Strength:
Solid build. easy maintenence. very reliable.
Weakness:
rear springs with stock shocks get a little mushy over time. My truck is the extra cab 4X4 model and it has been 1 rock solid automobile for the last 6 years. After 85K miles no problems to speak of -- ZIPPO. The oil light would not come right after I purchased and during an oil change at teh dealer it was promptly fixed. And, folks that is the only problem I've had. I'm place a premium on dependability and easy maintenance and this truck delivers and that's why I give it 5 stars. Sure there are personal picadillos but I knew the design and drivability of truck after the test drive. It delivered everything I wanted and more with its great reliability. Now, I'm moving on to a Volvo SUV and I know I'm going to miss the Tacoma's strengths. |

Tacoma 2wd
Strength:
dependable. seems indestructible. zero problems at 100k miles.
Weakness:
- poor gas mileage - no luxury vehicle - doesn't help me pick up girls This truck is amazing. I bought it used with 50k miles on it six years ago. I've now put another 50k miles on it. The only 'problem' i've had is that i had to replace the starter. Other than that, all i have done is change the oil every 3k miles, replace and rotate the tires, and other standard maintenance. Not a single problem. I've now started commuting 120 miles per day, including crossing the ridiculous highway 17 mountain pass from santa cruz to san jose, which can be tough on your vehicle everyday. It handles it like a champ. I am very proud of this truck. Similar Products Used: - honda crv - jeep cherokee - chevy el camino |

Tacoma V6 Ext Cab 4x4 TRD
Strength:
So far it's been very dependable with no major or minor problems.
Weakness:
The location of the oil filter required a filter re-location kit in order to do my own oil changes, the put the filter in a place where you can just touch ot but can't turn it and forget about getting a wrench or anything else on it. The relocation now makes changing the oil a 1,2,3 thing. The CD player skips at just about any road bump..Surely anti-skip technologly exsisited when the truck was built, Toyota would have been wise to look into this. Other than the aforementioned beat you to death on the paved roads while your CD skips all over the place that's really my only gripes. Overall it's a Very Good Truck...Just not as good as the prior series I think. I traded in a 93 4runner for a pick-up having owned two Toyota pickups before I didn't have any problems buying a third. The first was a 86 that I got in my divorce and the second was a 94 4cly I bought right before I got divorced, I sold the 86 to a friend that used it for a few years running up and down the mountains until the engine finally blew..not sure what kind of mileage he had on it then, My 94 I traded in on the above mentioned 4runner. I have to say I'm not as impressed with the Tacomca series as I was when they just called them plain trucks without a name. Overall it's been a dependable truck with no problems other than changing the oil and this year (2004) I flushed out and changed the coolant, other than that I haven't done anything else..Right now it has 42,000 miles on as this isn't my everyday sunday goto meeting truck, I usually drive it once or twice a week and of course whenever you own a pickup you always have friends, so I do loan it out a few times a year. I find the TRD Tacomca to be the roughest riding of all the Toyota trucks I've owned, Believe me you feel every bump. 4 Runner Xtra Cab
Strength:
Reliability, ground clearance. You can beat the crap out of this truck and it keeps coming back for more.
Weakness:
Size of the cab, rear end seems to be a bit lighter than other trucks. After my 88 Bronco finally died, I went shopping for another Ford. I had a serious case of the wants for the F-150, but, unfortunately, the dealers I visited weren't willing to bargain at all...they pretty much wanted full sticker price, and were more than willing to let a sale walk out the door rather than negotiate. After about two weeks of serious shopping, I drove into the local Toyota dealership on a whim. Although I wasn't wild about the truck's size, it handled very well, the pickup was decent, and the salesman was hungry. After 84K miles, all I've done is replace the brake pads, tires at about 35K miles, and change the oil regularly. This truck has proven to be a dependable vehicle, whether I'm helping a friend move, towing a boat, or driving in the city, and it's immune to extreme weather conditions. The 4X4 has plenty of torque to get you out of just about any situation you've gotten yourself into. My one gripe is what seems to be a lighter rear end than other trucks. The tires tend to spin when you touch the gas pedal after coming to a stop while on wet pavement. Similar Products Used: 1988 Ford Bronco 1995 Jeep Cherokee (wife's) 2001 Jeep Cherokee (wife's) |

V6 TRD SR5
Strength:
great looks. reliable. great re-sale value. awesome four wheel drive.
Weakness:
the bfgoodrich tires aren't really made for commuting as much as they are made for off-roading. i have actually owned two tacomas, a 99 four-cylinder and a 2003 six cylinder with the TRD. i think these trucks are great. while they're not as powerful as other trucks out there, they're very responsive, reliable and handle unbelievably well in bad conditions. i live out in the country where snow plows are unheard of and the tacomas have never failed to get me through it all. i have never been stuck nor have i ever had to drop the trucks into 4 low and i've been in blizzard situations with them. these trucks are definitely light so added weight in the bed helps to keep them from sliding around. i have had no problems with my 99 and my 2003 has only had a bit of a dash rattle that toyota took care off. the bfgoodrich tires aren't that great for highway driving as they tend to grab everything on the road, but they're great in bad weather. i was actually rear-ended in my 2003 and the only damaged i received was tail gate and bumper whilst the chevy SUV that ran into me was demolished and had to be towed. i suggest the TRD as it seems to handle a bit better but i really am convinced that the 99 models are really solid. i have had no engine troubles, no AC/heater troubles, nothing. i trust that every morning when i wake up the trucks will be ready to get me to where i need to go. i live out in colorado and the weather often goes from sunny and warm to cold and snowing in a matter of a day; i'm never worried in these things, i'm only worried about other drivers being careless. i've owned a 79 V8 half ton GMC pick up truck, an 86 4 cylinder Nissan XE truck, a 2001 Dodge Ram deisel, a 2oo2 GMC Tahoe, and a 2003 GMC Silverado diesel. i have to say that out of all of these, i feel the most confident in the tacoma. while these others boast way more horsepower and torque, their handling didn't feel responsive enough to me in bad situations and they often had too much power when it came to horrible weather. i find that the tacoma V6 has the perfect rpms and power to get the job done. |

Poor Customer Service with toyota, Continuing problems with transmission(not only in my truck, but i've heard that they have a recall for my year and make tacomas with transmission defects) First off, i love my tacoma. It goes where i want it to go, does what i want it to do. I have always heard very good things about toyotas. All my friends have tacomas and have had no complaints. I have heard that it takes beating the crap outta these things to get them to break. So why is it then that only after 2200 miles on a brand new truck, the Clutch, Fly wheel, and Pressure plate go out while driving down the street? Toyota took complete care of me from picking up the truck, fixing it and taking it to where i needed to be stored(i was deployed to iraq a week after the truck broke down.) So 18 months and 20,000 miles down the road(in which time i have only taken my truck offroading 2-3 times) My Tranny goes out with the same problems. I take it into toyota to get it fixed thinking its a Manufact defect, and only to have the service rep call me and tell me i need to pay them 1100.00 to fix it. SAME PROBLEM!!!!!! She said it looked like to her that it was user abuse and that i didnt know how to drive a Manual Transmission. I'VE BEEN DRIVING ONE SINCE I WAS 13! I never had this problem with my chevy and i beat the living daylights out of it!! Bottom line, i love my truck, and i will keep it forever, or until it blows up. I guess toyota's reputation is the only thing it can run on, and not on the quality of their products. Just about everything. I have had absolutely ZERO problems with this truck the entire time I've owned it. Also, 6 years later, I can sell it for well over $6,000. I'd call that resale value, considering the mileage and what I paid for it!
Weakness:
I wish the older ones like mine came with rear sway bars. My handling stinks until I get that finished. Then again, I drive my truck very hard, so most people would live without it. I've had this truck 6 of its 8 years, and I've put over 80,000 miles on it. I drive very hard, and I've yet to ever have a malfunction of any kind. The AC still blows cold, I still get good mileage, and I'm still using the original, unturned, unwarped brake rotors. Recently I dropped it 4", and it continues to be just as reliable. I've done motor work, with a big project coming soon, and a lot of little things. The truck never faulters. No matter what I do to it, it just keeps on going. Similar Products Used: My sister has a 96 S-10. Same year as my truck. She's replaced half the truck in the 8 years she's owned it, because it just falls apart, and things break. I was a GM fan until she got that truck. |
