Strength:

Power - this thing really gets up and moves. If i change the ECU I can put a TRD blower on it for an additional 60HP. Reliability. Enough said. Its fun to merge onto a freeway that is going up hill and still be able to hit the right lane at 70mph+.

Weakness:

Paint. The paint is oxidized on top and the hood. Of course this is an outside truck due to two others in the garage. Needs a paint job.

Purchased used with 47K miles. This is one fun truck. I put some Michelin meat on it (7" wide rims) for better traction. 0-60 in 6.7 secs. 196 HP (K&N) and 3020 lbs. Reliability is KING. This truck is my daily driver with 170K miles on it now. I don't even consider that it won't start and run the same way it has for the past ten years. Total maintenance has been minimal. It has had the usual stuff. Brakes, tires, oil, filters, fluids. I had the plugs, wires, and timing belt changed at 110K miles. Shocks at 120K. Rotors changed at 150K miles. Only one unexpected problem that was my own fault. At 125K miles, I caught a good second gear and toasted a syncro. With help from my brother-in-law we pulled the tranny and had it rebuilt for $800 with genuine Toyota parts. While it was apart I put in a new clutch assembly (not that it was needed - but...) 150K miles I replaced the battery and starter. Since then it as been running like the day I purchased it. To date I've spent about $2000 on maint including tires, brakes, and alignments. (I get 70K miles on a set of tires) and $1800 on the big stuff (including the tranny repair.) The best part is that this thing just keeps going and going and going and going and going ... Combined hwy/city driving i get about 20mpg. Highway with 89 octane I've seen 25mpg.

Model Reviewed: TACOMA TRD OFF ROAD

Strength:

power, decent gas mileage, roomy, looks, good ride.

Weakness:

If you have the chrome rear bumper keep an eye for rust pits around the licence plate. I only showed it to the dealer and didnt have to ask what they would do about it, they replaced it in 2 days.no questions asked. no other weakness

Havent had the taco very long yet but it has made a good impression so far. We had an 03 Dakota that was in an accident and wrote off. Looked at 07 Dakotas but they are so ugly I wouldnt put one in my yard. The Taco with a 6 cyl has not quite as much power as our V8 Dak but not much less either-its not even broke in yet and is much better on fuel. It has a lot of leg room, more room in the back(according to my wife, I havent rode there yet) The access cab is a lot better with the doors opening suicide style(we dont need the 4 door) This is my first Toyota and I am very happy with it. Probly wont be my last.

Model Reviewed: Tacoma Quad Cab Long Bed TRD

Strength:

size is perfect, not too big, not too small for this 6'-01" 240lb guy. The gas mileage is amazing compared to all other mid sized trucks. The pulling capacity blows away all other 6 cyl trucks in the same class.

Weakness:

The dealership was dis-honest and would not honor the deal we made in February when the vehicle could not be obtained and sold my them until March. I was forced to pay the difference. Also, I was given 6, yes 6, different delivery dates before the truck had actually arrived. I recommend to everyone out there to HAVE A PRINTED COPY OF THE TERMS AND PAYMENT INFO PRINTED AT THE TIME OF THE DEAL PRIOR TO THE DEALER taking a month and a help to locate the actual vehicle and altering the verbal agreement. Too bad we couldn't just order right from the manufactuer and cut out the sales all together!

The truck is awesome. Ample power, towing capacity, and nicely trimmed with the TRD sport package #2. The truck is everything that I wanted. Handles beautifully, drives like a car, and is truly a solid truck.

Model Reviewed: Toyota Tacoma SR5 4x4 Pick-up Truck with 5-Speed and V6

Strength:

This Toyota Tacoma is a extremely smooth, reliable and powerful truck. It is also a very pretty truck especially the 1998 - 2000 body style, which this one is.

Weakness:

It is not as well insulated as it should be. It is also a little bit on the noisy side. You can both hear it and feel it shift. The seats are not as comfortable as they should be on long trips. The gas mileage is not great. It does get better if you keep your right foot out of it. I have watched the gas mileage in this Tacoma pretty closely. It does 17 MPG in the city and 19 MPG on the highway. It is definitely not an ideal choice for a commuter rig.

I wanted a 1998 - 2000 Toyota Tacoma SR5 four wheel drive pick-up truck for years. I wanted one so badly I practically drove my old man crazy for five years trying to find one. The only things I wanted this truck to have were the V6 engine, the five speed manual transmission, a tachometer and manual locking hubs. Finding a V6 with the manual locking hubs was not easy let me tell you right now. I finally found the Tacoma I wanted in February of 2005 with the things I wanted. I can not tell you how many times my old man tried to talk me out of the manual hubs.
This Tacoma is a great truck. It does everything I need it to do. I am always hauling something in it, and it always comes through. It is very reliable dependable.
It certainly is not the quitest truck I have been in. It is definitely noisy in the cab. I can always hear the engine rev without ever having to pay attention to the tachometer. My old man's 4Runner is much quieter than my Tacoma.
The ride is firm and hard. Evertime you go over a speed bump no matter how slow, it gladly gives me a nice kick in the back and kidneys. I think it is nicely telling me it is a four wheel drive. I just wish it would tell me this without so much kick.
The Toyota Tacoma 3.4 Liter V6 engine is very powerful. My Tacoma will happily climb large grades all day long in fifth gear at 80 Miles Per Hour. The only complaining it will do is once it gets to the top of the hill, it will make me stop at the nearest fueling station. The Toyota V6 does like gas stations. Please get the Toyota four cylinder if you need your truck to get good gas mileage.
The other great thing about this Tacoma is that it is very attractive truck. I do enjoy looking at it. I wish mine had the chrome wheel cover mountings rather than the extended rubber lip mountings it has. This is something I am going to change on mine in the near future.

Strength:

Quality, reliability, resale value, utility, gas mileage (summertime = 19 mpg in town, 23 hiway).

Weakness:

A bit of a pain in the a$$ to change the oil. The oil filter dribbles oil all over when it's removed. Other than that?...HA!..Nada!!

What a fantastic, reliable work horse (but then again, it's a Toyota!)!! I use this for everyday driving to work, hunting, shooting out in the country, hauling sports gear, furniture. Anything that will go into the bed, I haul it! It is bone-dry underneath. It burns ZERO oil, leaks ZERO fluids, and is entirely original. It has 207,500 miles and still has the original clutch! I had the suspension upgraded at about 190,000 miles....1 broken leaf spring. I replaced all with a 3" lift kit and new shocks, etc. I just replaced the tires (had 60,000 on Bridgestones)...can't believe I get that many miles out of tires on a 4x4 truck! Alignment has always remained spot-on, no matter how I abuse it. There is no rust anywhere (I live in Illinois....snow/sand/salt on roads in winter!), paint still looks great (black), interior body is rattle-free, everything mechanical and electrical still functions as new. I keep looking at the new Tacos and Tundras but can't justify buying anything yet. If this Taco ever dies, I will buy another! I've had quite a number of Toyota in the family over the years, and all have been like this: DEAD-NUTS-RELIABLE! I can't understand anyone spending money on any other brand. If you're concerned about "American" built, or union loyalty, not to worry. Tacomas are built in USA, in a UAW plant, by UAW workers! 75%+ American-made content as well, which qualifies it officially by the government as an American Vehicle.

Strength:

Drop dead reliable, fairly good gas mileage (24mpg on the open road pulling that big tent trailer), low, low depreciation rate, fairly fun to drive.

Weakness:

Not the most comfortable or roomy rig. Engine noise is annoying on the highway due to lack of 5th gear. Next rig I buy WILL have air conditioning, too.

Utterly dependable. In 21 years I have replaced a water pump, fuel pump, and alternator. That's it. All the rest is just wear and tear stuff, and not much of that, either. I pull a fairly large tent trailer with it and have had no problems. Depreciation has been piddling--I can still get $1500 for the truck, making for truly cheap transportation over the years. All in all, the cheapest, most reliable transportation available (still) is the basic 4-cyl Toyota pickup.

This truck is the best purchase I've ever made in my life, hands down. I bought the truck new in 1999 as a left over. I now have 130,000 miles on it and it out works my buddy's f-150 and his brother's silverado with half the mileage (though it doesn't have the fullsize payload). I just did my first brake job at 119,000 miles! It pulls my 5,000 lb boat like nothing! Even in it's advanced mileage and years, it still gets around 23 highway mpg. I cannot recommend anything more strongly than purchasing a Tacoma.
